Oh wow.. this was honestly so beautifully written and done. SO MANY incredible moments. Pardon my long commentaries -- there was a lot to touch on 😅

Bravo to the cast and crew and everyone who was a part of this show. Such a beautiful piece of art. We need more of these!

PS. Thank you guys for suggesting this. It was honestly quite healing 🥹 I don't think I ever planned to speak about my experiences about this side of my personal life as a reaction Youtube person. But watching these with you guys, I felt a sense of comfort and it honestly felt great to speak about them in this way -- through Shane and Ilya 🫶🏽

i'm always so happy when people finish this series with full of praise and most importantly feeling also happy, because we don't really get that happy queer endings, i don't talk about BL series, because it's very different things. Apparently a lot of big streamers were trying to film this in the US and they had so many notes and so many thoughts about what the show could be, so jacob decided to leave them and get it made in canada. with much smaller budget, but he was able to do the show he wanted to make. hollywood didn’t want any kissing until episode five LOL that's so fucking insane. this be a lesson for them i guess.

and as a queer person, this show just made me happy, it healed me. i understand the thing you said about your mom, when i came out to her 5 years ago, it was very difficult, she was not like cruel or yelling at me, but she was crying and i could see that she was having a hard time. i cried a lot too. and affer that for a year we didn't talk about that at all, it was like i didn't even say anything, we don't live in the same country so when we met she finally talked to me and said that she was just scared for me, she didn't want the world to be cruel to me or kill me some day, because i was living in very homophobic country at that time, it's very close to russia. she was like "i dont care who you sleep with, i was scared " lol and that was such a relief to hear. but until i heard that, i always felt guilty, i felt like i was still doing something wrong, because my mother just ignored whole thing for a year. i hope you will have that kind of moment with your mother too :)

ep. 5: my fav episode seriously... the Russian monologue omg crying every sing time watching/hearing it especially since I did learn Russian so I do understand it most of the time.. also the fact that only thing Shane understood from the monologue is "Svetlana" DAMN... Scott and Kip my BABIEEEES (genuinely don't understand how ppl hate them like they are adorable and such a need for Ilya and Shane's relationship plus whole NHL industry if you read the books) the kiss was PURE PERFECTION and the fact that Kip's dad was there too omg love that man🥹 also the scene Shane got hurt I also like the fact Hayden went full anger mode and started fighting the player (idk how to spell his name haha) that hurt Shane 🥹my besties love my girl Rose such an angel🩷 ep. 6: I think they cutting the sex scene more bcs in ep 1&2 their relationship was about sex only, ep 4 was sex and developing feelings and now these two episodes are especially about their feelings so it makes sense to me🙌🏻 oh I love soft Ilya 😭 also they did not translated some of Russian stuff like when Ilya won the first Stanley Cup he said "that's for you mom" or before he said I love you in English he said it twice in Russian and it's sad bcs some ppl my not notice it especially the ones that don't speak Russian.. "she would have loved you... like I love you" OKAY JUST STAB ME ATP😭😭 "okay, what's the plan" mama maneger mode ON 🤣love her I think after Shane said to Ilya that the word lovers is gross he really thought about that and came out the the conclusion that maybe boyfriend is a safe word haha love that scene so cute🤣 we are getting season 2 AND also season 3 since third book of their story is about to be released in September 🥹👏🏻 but I wish we would get other couples story as a own series too (my fav is tough guy.. it's about Ryan Price they did mentioned him in ep 4 on a couch - the silent nice guy who get always treated to another team)

Just finished your reaction to ep 5!!!!! (Crying once again) jeff, not sure if you noticed, the song during that part had "i need sunshine" and remember when Elena said they both deserve sunshine ahhhhh just love how they chose their songs. Ok off to ep 6!

Camille Angelica TV

Finished!!! So happy you gave this series a chance. And also, thank you for sharing your story with us too 🥰🥰 let's all cross our fingers that jeff gets a part the next seasons!!

Lynn

Thank you so much for watching this series, Jeff! It is truly special and so amazing. I loved hearing your thoughts on some of my favorite scenes and such. I hope you can find your own love story because you deserve it! ❤️

I’m so glad you enjoyed it. It’s genuinely one of my favorite book adaptations, if not my favorite. It makes me really happy to see so many people giving this story the appreciation it deserves. And thank you, Jeff, for sharing your thoughts and feelings, it was such a great watch 🫶🏻

I'm not sure season 3 is actually confirmed. I know they signed on for a 3 season deal if all went well, but it wasn't a guarantee it would happen. Now, with the level of success the show has had I would not be surprised to see it go for all three.

Callie

I loved what I saw someone say online about why HR resonates with so many people: It gives people the ability to experience through these characters things that seem magical. The rivals with benefits that turns out to love you just as much as you love him. A guy who is able to come out and is rewarded for doing so. Hearing your parent apologize to you for doing you wrong. Season 2 will have them dealing with more external conflict, but ultimately you know that they will get their happily ever after. <3

They always mention season 3 when talking about the series. Hudson mentioned in shut up evan.

There are total 6 released books and the 7th one will be out in Sept this year from Game Changer series. Scott and Kip story in book no.1, then Heated Rivalry book no.2 and 3 more books introducing other characters..Ilya makes his appearance in all the books n then the 6th book The Long Game with Ilya and Shane story continues showing their external conflict where Heated Rivalry was more internal. Can't wait for the 2nd Season and the final book.

Hey Jeff, There were some details which I don't know you have picked up after you edited the reaction. But here comes my essay: Episode 5 The Rose and Shane convo: The flashbacks in Shane's mind were much sweeter/romantic in how he remembered it even though we (the viewers) only saw the whole lust thing. For a neurodivergent person, saying what he is feeling is a hard thing because they don't understand them so much, since it's not "logical" (keep in mind that eye contact is really hard for neurodivergent people as well), so the way Hudson acted in that convo and especially the eye acting was amazing to see and reminded me of when I had serious convo's with my nephew who is on the spectrum. The Tampa Bay Bar Scene Convo: Ilya was thinking that Shane was going to marry Rose (His POV is stressful in the books and I quote his exact thought: "I'm seeing someone, I'm engaged. I don't need you anymore.") So as soon as he heard the words "I hired a stylist," he was relieved to the core so much that Connor slipped out hahaha. This also explains his jealous toned questions he asked Shane. Ilya leaves unexpectedly: Shane was worrying so much that, if I'm not mistaken, it was the first time he actually called instead of texting like they always do. Ilya's confession made him realize that, other than Svetlana, Shane is all he has and that is too scary for him. Shane accident/concussion scene: 1. When Shane has the accident on ice, there is a moment where he is unconscious. For Ilya (Hospital Scene), he was considering ending it all because giving in to those feelings of love was too scary for Ilya and losing Shane would be too much for him, and he felt like he did not deserve someone like Shane, so he wanted to end it all. However, when he saw Shane in the Hospital and how excited/happy he was about inviting Ilya to the cottage, he could not bear to see a tear in Shane's eyes if he would decline the offer. He did not want to hurt Shane and that's why he said, "Later." 2. Ilya was the one who found his mother when she committed. There is still a wound that is there and seeing Shane lying there unconscious like that must have been triggering, which explains his reaction on the ice. Shane is a sweety patootie when he says, "Tell Ilya I'm OK, he's going to worry." I also don't really remember how it was in the books for this part, but Shane was looking at Ilya when the accident happened, so he would probably have felt like it was his fault that happened to Shane. The iconic "I'm coming to the cottage" line: The dealbreaker for Ilya was the coming out of Scott Hunter (which is why episode 3/book 1, is so important). Had Scott not done that, he would have broken off the relationship with Shane even though he himself would be devastated, and he was packing his suitcase to go to Russia. But seeing the coming out on public television made him realize he should go for what he wants, so thank you, Scott & Kip. Episode 6 Shane's comment about wanting to relax in the cottage: As someone who has neurodivergent people in my environment, it was a big thing to see, because Shane is never "relaxed". The fact that his only safe space where he feels at peace is the cottage and that he wants to relax with Ilya speaks a lot about how he feels and how much trust he has in him. Shane was carrying Ilya's bag: There was a twitter comment in the series about Shane looking like he would carry Rose's bags and the fact that he is doing it for his man is so cute hahaha. The burgers: Typical neurodivergentness, he followed the recipe EXACTLY as it was for 8 people, which was so cute as well. And you can see sauce bottles, tomato and red onion slices in separate dishes in front of the burgers, and I think cheese slices, for each person to add how much of them they each want to their own burgers. This is probably because of budget, but in the case of someone on the spectrum, they struggle with certain food combinations or textures of some things, so maybe this was also thought about in the series. The Phone call with Hayden: Connor was such a tease haha, the slaps on Hudson's face and the fingers in his mouth were improvised in this scene and that made the whole production team laugh hahaha. It also made the moment so funny and quirky. Also, Shane did not want that, but he sat higher on the couch for his gentleman to be face level with Ilya, huh naughty naughty Shane haha. The marriage talk on the couch: The jealous face Shane made had me cackling hahahaha and also the feet hugging was so cute to see. But in this scene, Shane does not tell Ilya not to marry Svetlana out of jealousy, but more so, because he knows that Ilya also likes girls and by this point they still haven't put a label on what they are, so he is thinking that Ilya could find someone he loves but not considering that he is the man Ilya loves. Since it had not been officially mentioned yet, Shane does not register that they are a thing, so he was actually being nice and selfless. The "she would have loved you" broke me!!! The tears I cried especially with Connor's delivery. Omg...!!! Shane and his mother's convo: She asks for him to look at her multiple times. Eye contact is something very difficult for someone on the spectrum and especially when they are overwhelmed with emotions. He looks at her but quite quickly looks away because it's uncomfortable. The way Hudson acted this was amazing. Now looking back on the series, Shane is actually able to look at Ilya in his eyes for a longer period of time, proving again how vulnerable he can be and how at ease he feels with him. The best example of him being overwhelmed and making eye contact with Ilya for a longer period of time is the bathroom scene in Vegas. Final table scene with the family: Ilya was ENJOYING that pasta haahahahahaha and the dad moved the pan and the cheese closer to him like, "Here, son, have all you want." This was such a cute moment where the two control freaks were making up a plan hahahahaha Ilya and dad were in their own world and I love that. In this scene, Shane finally gets confirmation that they are indeed boyfriends, which is so cute. And also, the mom and dad, seeing how Ilya grounded Shane after his panic attack and was even able to kiss him at that moment, made them realize they have been in love for a long time and that their son has a person who can ground him and be there for him when they are not around which makes the "since rookie season" and the "the summer before" a very emotionally loaded line for the parents side and also a very cute moment for all of them. And the realization of the mom after they said please text was hilarious hahahaha. The 2nd and 3rd seasons are indeed confirmed, so I can't wait for that, especially for all that is coming, which is a lot, and I'm happy they are continuing the series. I would LOVE to see you there, so if there are casting auditions, do apply for it and me and all your fans will send you all the support and good luck so you can land a role!! Also, thank you so much for sharing your experiences and, in a way, being vulnerable with us. Both the books and the serie(s) are a masterpiece, and I'm happy it's getting the well-deserved attention! I would like to see your reactions on their interviews especially since they are the opposite of their on screen characters because there is a lot they talk about and I would love to hear your opinions about that with your knowledge in the acting world. See it like a variety show reaction I think haahaha but if you don't want to I can understand! P.S. Connor and Hudson also did the voice overs for Ember & Ice, I would love to see your reactions on those episodes of the audiobook because I was blushing from head to toe hearing their voices like that with the Ember & Ice story haha

I just had to pause this to thank you again for how open and candid you've been about your open experiences and journey as a queer person. This series has created SO much catharsis for us as a community. Its all so deeply personal. I hope no one takes for granted just how much of yourself you've shared with us here. It actually made me a little emotional and I'm only at the 17min mark! Thank you, Jeff. <3

jeffavenue

aww thank u so much for this sweet message! 💙💙🤗

jeffavenue

oooo thanks for taking the time to write these out! great to know for when i rewatch too!

Hey, You're welcome!! I'm always happy to write haha :) I forgot to mention more stuff but did not want to write 5 pages haha. Ilya in Russian when he confesses to Shane: He says that he always makes sure the food is perfect, (even after his dad has died). This is a sad line, because if you look back at when he stocked ginger ale for Shane, he asked Shane, "Ginger ale cold enough?" Also, a lot of "good quality" food, fruits, greens etc. have to be imported to Russia, which is expensive and hard to get, so that also speaks of all the extremes Ilya had to go through to let his father have a good life. When Shane has his coming out with Ilya: Shane says, "I'm sorry if I'm being boring again." Ilya then sits down. In this scene, Ilya sits down because normally "boring" means cute/adorable etc. (so something positive) when Ilya says it to Shane. However, he sees that he has hurt Shane unconsciously by letting Shane think that "boring" means something negative and that's why Ilya breaks down his walls and sits down to listen more attentively and ultimately opens up as well. Then it skips to after they have had sex and here Shane asks "what?" and Ilya says, "Nothing, good night Shane" (showing that first name is not so bad after all), and Shane answers (after a sigh of relief and happiness), "Good night Ilya" (confirming that indeed it is not a bad thing) Cottage talk about Shane telling his parents (when they are eating the hamburgers): There is a moment where Ilya moves his hand away from Shane's lap and this is a foreshadowing of everything that is coming in the next seasons, which is a lot and a big rollercoaster as well. But to give you context without spoiling, it's basically Ilya is now almost free of his shackles so he can be more "open and carefree" but for Shane, that would not be the case. So this will clash a lot. You will see a lot of details you have missed on the second watch and if you watch it more your point of view can also switch. If you read the books you will also understand Ilya more, but I'm happy to comment on the upcoming seasons with my knowledge of the books. Overall, this series is the best adaptation of a book I have ever seen!

Eva

This is my comment before watching the reactions. I subbed yesterday and binge the 4 episodes. I am now ready for the last two ones. I really appreciated your first reactions. I even dropped some rec to your channel in other patreon chats full of obsessive HR fans. ;) But now let's see the two best episodes with you! ;)

jeffavenue

oh wow thanks for the rec!! I appreciate that!

S

Jefffff I'm so glad that you got to watch this show and enjoy it and experience this magic with the rest of us. I have been a long time watcher and patreon sub from the beginning and I haven't been caught up on this channel for a while but I have stayed subbed and this is the first time I've seen you openly talk about your personal experiences with queerness and I love that for you. I'm glad this show and community has made you feel safe enough to open up more about your story. I would be so excited to see you on set with them for season 2 I will tell everyone I knew you from the beginning of time haha. Also I'm not sure if this means you will be more open for more BL reactions but I will leave some recs. Reset the series (about the Thai acting industry and a betrayed actor who gets thrown back in time to reset his life). Beautiful cast and chemistry and intimacy), Khemjira (cursed guy who shall die at 20 and meets a shaman who has a tie to his past. Really high budget with deep Thai culture roots showcased), Me and Thee (really light hearted funny and romantic show with a Mafia guy who watches too many soap operas), Bad Buddy (iconic family rivals to frieniemies to lovers with a lot of surprising depth and yearning). I hope you can check out some trailers and see what gels well with you. Also some details about the show that I haven't seen anyone mention is that the jerseys represent their top bottom positions lol so Ilya jersey has a Gun as their team logo and Shane's has a M almost like the knee stretch move they do on the ice that just looks like they're bending over... The actor for Ilya is really getting raved for the near perfect Russian accent and tone and skill that he has displayed seeing as he's not Russian at all and just learned it on his own and then had a dialogue coach for 2 weeks. Also as you rewatch this show you notice more and more details especially if you read the books but I haven't yet. So far I've seen people mention how endeared Ilya is to Shane's quirks from the beginning like the first locker room scene when he drops his shoe cause he's overwhelmed and when Shane gets annoyed that he was left outside looking like an idiot when Scott Hunter is right next door like Ilya is just smiling and charmed. Also the hospital scene where you see Shane's heart beat being high but when Ilya comes to hold his hand his heart beat goes lower and more calm. Even in Russia when he tells Shane he loves him for the first time you see the wide shot of him looking around and in the background you see the police cop lights pass by. Also the club scene is so iconic the t.a.t.u song with the male version mixed in is perfect with the lyrics and there's also a Russian version that would've fit Ilya pov. There's a creator on tiktok who is Russian and gives a lot of context to how homophobia is different in Russia and what it means to be high profile and watched for that reason in Russia so there's levels to Ilya really being unsafe there. Also when he sees Miles in the club he recognizes him from all his online stalking of Shane and Rose so that's why he turns to see where Shane is and of course then Shane sees Ilya's teammate and then tries to see where Ilya is. I'm sure there is so many more details but that's what makes this show so rewatchable.

jeffavenue

first of all thank you so much for all these extra details! i learn so much about this series so much from you guys! especially it explains more about ilya's russia situation. i have better understanding of the circumstances now! also just wanted to thank you for staying subscribed even though you dont always watch the videos. your support means a lot!! 💙
