Surprise! We are doing this earlier than expected. The leads are so cute!! I'm done Produce X 101 this week so this will take over that filming day.

Most of the explanation is in the intro but to summarize, basically, I'm not seeing Perfect Crown as viral as this one (on my side of the pond anyway). I did see that it reached double digits in Korea but they're not really my audience and ultimately, I just want to do content that more of you here would enjoy.

As this is 40 eps (big commitment), all I ask is that you guys LIKE each upload of this show EVEN IF you're not ready to watch yet (cause I know life happens) but when you see this uploaded, please give the post a LIKE so I don't prematurely get discouraged that no one's watching anymore.

ALSO! I watched this on WeTV as I figured the subs may be better since it's an asian-centric streaming service with a ton of CDramas. But let me know if you'd prefer I watch from Netflix!

My goal is to upload weekly at least 2 eps. But some days I will upload more- just depends on how much time I have that sitting.

LIKE this post if you're watching! Enjoy!

Omg we’re doing this?! Okay I’m seated. Time to rewatch. Thanks Jeff🫶🏻

Melissa O

Well this just made me so happy 😁.

camila Valdez

OMG this just made my day ❤️. I started watching this when you said you weren’t gonna watch it right away, and it’s sooo good. So excited to watch this with u!

Kimberley

So good that you are watching this. Also YESSSSSSSS!!!!!!!! The subs are wayyyyyyyyy better on WeTV than Netflix. I just feel like Netflix sometimes fucks up translations for the fun of it. And since this is historical, I just feel like it's better to have more accurate translations.

Lisa Marie

I’m so excited to rewatch with you! 💕

vee

aww jeff, im happy you're getting into cdramas but im not a fan this drama choice 😭 idk if you've heard about the controversy but zhang linghe, aka the male lead of this turned out to be racist towards southeast asians hence i couldn't bring myself to watch any of his projects anymore for context, in one of his variety show guesting, there's an ugly drawing of him and dude literally said he looks like a south east asian in that drawing 🥲 which saddens me as a SEA coz i was a long time fan of him, ive watched most of his dramas ive seen some fans called him out about it on tiktok esp SEA ppl but unfortunately looks like more ppl wanna brush it off like it's nothing, and i was thinking if it's maybe we're just used to east asians belittling us 🥲

Darllyn L.

I loved this drama jeff! will rewatch it with you 😁

codesoftblue

I'm seated with this one!!! More of cdramas please :)

Laure

Yay!! I'm so happy you're doing this. I was actually about to rewatch the whole series by myself, but now I get to do it with you! I hope you enjoy your intro to cdramas! Regarding Perfect Crown, I would say the pilot episode isn't the strongest, so a lot of people started critiquing the drama. But episodes 3 and 4 are so much better, and I'm seeing more people tune into it. I would suggest also maybe waiting for the hype to pick up internationally and deciding what to do, but I believe more people will start tuning into it.

Kimberley

Also, the face of the actor for "Song Yan" got altered in post-production. That is why he looks like a vampire. I think it might have had something to do with him filming for a bl after doing POJ (Pursuit Of Jade). The laws are kind of all over the place with China and censorship rn. So you might just have to get used to his face looking like he has a filter on because he actually does.

Michelle Lanie

So excited you’re reacting to this. I watched as soon as I got the notification. Love the reaction. Looking forward to watching more episodes with you 🤗

mali

OMG OMG I was seriously so surprised when I saw this upload 😭 such a pleasant surprise fr!! Thank you for this reaction — I honestly wasn’t expecting it at all, but ayyy LET’S GOOOO! 🔥🎉

mali

Aww I get where you're coming from, and I totally understand why that situation would make you feel that way, especially as a SEA fan 🥲 But honestly, there are so many brilliant actors and actresses in this drama who are really worth watching for. I’m not really a big fan of Zhang Linghe either, but I love the rest of the cast and the drama itself. It’s actually not bad at all, and I think it’s a really good starting point for people who are new to historical C-dramas. That’s why I don’t really see a problem with Jeff starting with this one—especially with all the hype around it and the huge fanbase it has. At the end of the day, there’s still a lot to enjoy in the story and performances beyond just one actor 😊

Kimberley

Yes, pork intestines and tail are considered a "luxury" for Changyu and her people, but they are also a low-income type of food, which hints at just how poor she is and how "rich" Yan Zheng might be. Plus, yes, Zhang Linghe, the actor playing Yan Zheng, is a titan of a man standing at 190cm tall. He has also gone viral MULTIPLE TIMES for his face and his proportions. You gotta see him in a modern drama next, or maybe look up pictures of him just to see how long his legs are. The proportions are immaculate. Also, sorry, I'm not trying to spam comments on purpose; I just write as I watch. That is why I'm leaving so many comments. Lastly, to explain a bit, they have to say "matrilocal husband" because there is a difference. If it were a regular marriage, she would be marrying into his family, which means he would be the head of the household, and she would have to leave her home anyway. However, what they are trying to do is have him marry into her family. This was to ensure that ownership of the house would be passed to her, as she would become the head of the household.

vee

i get where you're coming from. it's just that for me, i was mainly gonna watch the drama bcoz of him then sht happened 🥲 it outweighs my interest of giving the drama itself a chance coz istg i feel annoyed everytime he appears on screen, not to mention he's the main actor 😔

Kimberley

I don't know for anyone else that has watched it from beginning to end, but for me personally, this was such a great drama from beginning to end (I also watched it while it was airing, and I did not binge the episodes, so that might have had an effect as well). But I genuinely could not get enough of it. Up until now, I am still looking for reactors to rewatch this with, which is why I was so happy you decided to watch this early. But yeah, the production, the music, the set designs, the fight choreos,... everything was A+ for me, and I have watched my fair share of historical dramas. I will admit I might also be slightly biased because the male lead, Zhang Linghe, is one of my favorite male leads. He has another historical drama called " Story of Kunning Palace" that had great ratings as well. I loved that one so much, too. And I saw that you enjoyed the cinematography on this one. The director of this drama is very famous for having gorgeously beautiful dramas, and he loves the "snow setting". They also directed another lovely drama called "Blossom". I'm sorry, I might be coming at you with so much info all at once. I just get very easily excited and become a chatterbox.

Elsa Wang

Hi, I’m Chinese and I can say with certainty that WeTV’s subtitles are way better than Netflix’s. For example, when an actor says “sister”, Netflix will just translate it as a personal name, which loses a lot of the intended mood and context. So if you have a choice, it’s better to watch on WeTV.

Mimi

Subscribed because of PoJ. Excited and can’t wait to rewatch this show alongside you! I know the episodes count looks a bit intimidating, but the fact that there are many people rewatching it really speaks to how little filler there is. I’d even go as far as to say the plot, the political intrigue, and the incredible fight scenes —and especially the characters chemistry—are so engaging that it all just flies by. ..which is exactly why it’s so rewatchable. And honestly, I have to keep stopping myself from saying too much while trying to convince you to watch this 😆

Sara

OMG WHATTT!!??? i thought this was totally not happening omg i am SO happy thank youuuu 🥹🩵🩵

Ching

definitely not netflix

Ching

episodes are short compare to kdrama so its a quick watch..might consider to add more eps per release but no pressure..just happy you are finally giving it a trt

c.crose

omggggg finally!! i was waiting so bad haha, literally the best drama i've watched so far!! good story and so many fine shyts 😆😆 watched it twice and i still can't move on

c.crose

it may feel overwhelming with the eps but honestly minus the intro and stuff of the actual episode, it's like 35-40 mins per eps hope you enjoy it!!

Lani S

I resubbed for this. You made the right choice! This is so good, you won't even notice that there are 40 eps. They're short episodes too so the total runtime is really almost as long as some kdramas out there. I'm also from the Philippines and thought exactly the same thing during the scene when Changyu was opening her store! Looking forward to your commentaries on the acting/production, as well as when you start falling in love with this couple. I think you won't be able to stop at 2 episodes a week. :)

Michelle

This is my 4th time watching this series🤭Just a little info, I saw a post about the guy acted as Song Yan the jerk ex. They used AI for his face cause he acted in a BL series. I fell in love with the soundtracks in this series. I was just here for EXO but rewatching it is fun with someone😁

Eb

This is definitely a pleasant surprise! Great drama and I'm looking forward to watching this again with you!

Steffi

I saw a bit a both, to me the Netflix version has better subs lol, I think the show starts to get very good around ep 3!

blu3.hour

I really do hope you watch Perfect Crown, I like it and am having a good time. Ep3 is my favorite so far, and I believe that’s where many people’s opinions about it shifted

Rayna

Yes, pls gv cdrama a try as its been going more better than kdrama recently in regarding plot wise, filming techniques, costumes, actors roles and much more. Even though there’s many ep but they publish it way faster than kdrama (which is 2ep per week). Audience feel way more intact n keeping the plot going as we watch if it update daily. There’s still many nice cdrama with special effects and actions that its really show the actors effort to portrait the characters. I think that’s one of the reasons why many ppl watching it. Sometime just want to go in those fantasy mode 😂 Last but not least, who doesn’t want to watch handsome guy and a pretty girl acting as main character 😆

Rosie

im hereee for it!!!!!!!! resubscribing for this!!!!

Rosie

If I can put 100 likes I will!!!

Lani S

I’m SEA and wasn’t insulted. I didn’t find it offensive. You judged the drawing as ugly and equated it to SEA. That is offensive. How do you know if he wasn’t talking about the shape of the eyes? Much like if I were to see a caricature drawing of me with slanted eyes and say I look Chinese. That’s not a slur towards Chinese people.

LiveLaughLoveZonZon

I’m excited for this. Also….Perfect Crown has been all over my timeline and Twitter? It’s being talked about as well, so I hope you react to it eventually too

LiveLaughLoveZonZon

This! I hope he can react to it soon! I have been seeing so much love about it on the timeline

Lani S

I’m also obsessed with this and re-watching 3 streams of it at the same, Jeff’s reaction, another reactor, and on a rewatch on my own because when I watch the reactions, I cannot not continue watching the next episode. 😂 and I’d pay to watch more of my fave reactors like Jeff to see it. The different reactors bring different perspectives so it’s not repetitive for me. This is the first time I’m seeing it on WeTV though so I’m excited to see the difference.

jeffavenue

trulyyyy. I have heard a lot of kdrama fans have switched to cdramas. competition is great! more competition = higher quality

jeffavenue

yess it's not a no, im probably gonna just wait to see how it picks up! I was also late to Lovely Runner so I think it's fine to wait a bit

jeffavenue

ohhh. I did hear that the Chinese gov is restricting BL productions so that's very unfortunate

jeffavenue

okie! thanks for saying that! we'll keep doing WeTV

Rosie

Im so thrilled to rewatch this finally with you! You nailed it at the park ! POJ has that immersive feeling when watching it. That's why people rave about it. from Cinematography to the leads. to be honest it may have its highs and lows as the plot progresses like any other drama but the main leads will just keep you in it. Changyu's journey in fact. (Especially politicial intrigues but they made it simple) I've seen soooo many historical dramas and some are super great plots but this one holds special. But overall cdramas has something in them that they have such so much rewatch value. Hence people rewatch it many times. Ever since POJ, I haven't binged watch (and I move on pretty quickly). That speaks to how much it impacted me and many viewers. Cannot move on from this yet. I doubt you'll gonna stop at 2 episodes per week. 😅🤣 Welcome to cdrama world! Enjoy the experience. We are here if you have questions or maybe not. They said POJ is the great introduction to cdramas.

sanitizerr

I’m guessing we’ll be seeing more chinese dramas soon?🤪 I have so many recommendations for modern ones🙌🏻

Jo-Pa

OOOHH MY GOD I am sat. When i saw this post my joy reached a peaakkk i am so happy to rewatch it with you... i don't think ther is a filler episode to this . it's different from K dramas and there is so much to discover ... don't worry about the number of episodes.. have a nice day :)

Mimi

Just thought to add: The way they focused on his “not being used to” pork intestines really gives away his background—honestly, even more than his clothing did when our girl first met him (especially since his bc outfit was already worn down and no longer the silk you’d expect). Nobility simply didn’t eat pork, let alone something like intestines. That small detail speaks volumes and highlights the stark difference in their upbringings. The era Pursuit of Jade draws from is roughly 60% inspired by the Song dynasty (960-1279)—you can see it in things like the matrilocal marriage custom, the official attire (especially the long-winged caps), and the jewelry and food culture distinctions like not eating pork. It's those thoughtful touches that make the world feel so grounded and layered. It’s details like this that make the storytelling so satisfying.

stormizz91

Ohhh!! I’m excited to see your review of POJ! WeTV prbly had better subs but my usual would be iQiyi then WeTV then Netflix (I have all 3 + Youku too 😅). Definitely gonna spend some time to watch your reaction!

jeffavenue

yess love the details! i’m wondering, do u know what type of meat the upper class may have eaten during this era?

jeffavenue

haha let’s get through the 40 eps first but yes - would be open to suggestions!

Mimi

For the Song dynasty, pork wasn’t banned (unlike certain periods in the Ming dynasty). Among the upper class, lamb was especially favored, along with beef. Historical records—even preserved menus—show a clear preference for meats like those, and sometimes even duck and chicken, rabbit even. Pork, while still consumed by commoners, wasn’t exactly considered “fashionable.” So overall, it really depends on the time period—what was considered the most desirable meat could shift over time. That said, historical records across multiple dynasties do point to periods where pork was viewed as less fashionable or even somewhat looked down upon, especially among the elite.

Darllyn L.

I think doing this first makes sense too Jeff as perfect crown is still on goin anyways. The pilot episodes for that has a good mix of tension and rom com as well so I''m pretty sure you'll like it. Anyways, yea it can wait. haha

nestybug8

I'm waiting for Perfect Crown to finish since I don't have Disney Plus subscription. Will get a subscription for a month to binge it once it finish. The fact that it is not on Netflix could be the reason of lack of hype for Perfect Crown as well?

Honeybabe

Am really happy you are reacting to this . Thanks Jeff.

SN00PY29

OMG ♥️ thank you for reacting to this! ☺️

Akshi Ankita

Love this show watching it again with you …!!!! Rejoined for this show..!!! 😀😀😀

Rosie

definitely cross that bridge after you survive 40 episodes🤣

Poppimentee

It is definitely better than in Netflix. I watch people watching boths and in WeTV, the subtitles for everything is better. Still not as good as Iqiyi but yep!

TeumeUwoo26

Literally subscribed just to watch your reactions to this beautiful drama! Can’t wait to rewatch with you Jeff!!

Helena Hendrixson

Joining to watch this with you! I’m so excited! I ate this up!

Jane Madriaga

I renewed because of this 😅❤️ Im so happy you are doing this.... look forward to your journey to cdramas. This is top tier.

Jane Madriaga

They live in one of the poorest town, so they don't know much about whats expensive or authentic... they even thought a provincial examination passer like Song Yan is so high enough 😅

Jane Madriaga

Top Tier Cdramas are very poetic and far different from kdrama... this one the eras are divided in three parts, from the lowest class, the war/battle era and the real battle wc is the politics side ... I won't say anymore but I just happy you are in this journey. Love you Jeff 💜❤️

Jane Madriaga

Im southeast asian, but I wasn't offended. He already apologized and reflected. For me, people recieved it in a negative way, when that's not is his intentions. It's like my kid drawing me and I say "I look like Chinese", am I racist for saying that??? Lets have wisdom to discern things and don't let social media corrupt our way of understanding things. Blessings ❤️

Jane Madriaga

It has a good storyline and structure. Starting from the lowets, the people who are affected by war, middle wc is the war, then the real battle wc is politics.

Syn Tri

Subscribed to rewatch with you. I watch on iQiyi, where the translations are far superior to Netflix.

Ash

I'm late to the game, but finally watching--my first C drama! A friend of mine started talking about this show and I was like, "Oh, a reactor I love has been watching it!" so that was all that I needed. I'm learning a lot!

Nova Amore

ahh, i finally have time to watch this with you, now that i'm all graduated from college lmaooo🥹🥹 I'm so curious about your thoughts on a cdrama vs kdrama already loll!!! I feel like this cdrama has been one that brought me back to cdramas actually, since I used to watch a lot with my family, then stopped for a while🤔
