Runaways 11 Style Guide (SPOILERS) (Patreon)

spoilers if you havent read issue 11 yet.

so. lets talk about gert.

this was a big issue, this was something rainbow and i had been talking about since before i started issue 1. we always knew we'd eventually update her look. something we were exploring with her is how lost she was in this new time period from when she died. in one aspect how lost she was with her teammates who all grew up around her, and in another how her counter-culture was no longer counter.

a lot has changed since 2007, especially culturally and in fashion. what was considered a fairly extreme stylistic move to dye ones hair, especially a bold color like purple (i had hot pink back in highschool), has become fairly common place now. so what does that do to someone who see's her rebellion every where she looks. gert has always prided herself, and actively sought, being non-conformist. 

rainbow came with more ideas on this in the beginning then i did. wanting to go back to a natural hair color, changing the glasses, and finding outfits that no longer hid her body but allowed her to embrace her curves. i wanted to go with curly hair to set it apart from her straight hair from before, and from the other girls; it gives it a fun silhouette too. 

outfit wise we spent the better part of a year trying to find something that fit. punk looks, newsies looks, etc. something rainbow really wanted for this first outfit was a throwback to the outfit that future-gert shows up in back in the original run. something with more of a corset/boots look. the color scheme also matches that outfit. we wanted to change her glasses, but we settled on these because i wanted something that showed her face more. her old glasses were sort of this bar right in the middle of her face, which was good at obscuring her eyes if i needed to play with her being sad or defensive. i didnt want that going forward because we were embracing that this is gert opening up. for the overall style we both sort of arrived at the same place but separately, but basically i really believed that gert would be someone who'd style herself off of Hamilton.
