We spent a significant amount of time on the design of Wilkos's office. Beyond the initial sketches, Salaiix also made some 3D models of the room, just to get a better feel for where everything should go.

We changed several things in the final version, but the overall design stayed very close.

Why does the 2D look more alive than the 3D? 😅

Lighting, shadow, and texture are very important in how we interpret form. An illustration usually has the viewer's brain fill in the blanks so to speak on their own. 3D renders are useful for planning because they allow you to replicate and change on the fly. The render doesn't look "complete" because our brains are expecting something that isn't there. If they for example were to spend time adding more models, textures, and materials it would add more authenticity to the scene. However I believe the purpose was just to plan the layout of the office in a timely fashion. Just my thoughts.

Exactly :) Salaiix mostly used the 3D renders for this as a map of where things would go in the room. We did briefly consider using 3D modeling for some of the furniture, but because many textures/shadows/etc would have had to be added, and time was too short to experiment with it, we kept most of the room 2D.

Ah yes, I, too, have Erotic Painting on my wall 😄 love the attention to normal paintings vs the ones that are more saucy
