If Eleanor and the kids throw a handful of insectivore mix outside nesting season while the Magpie is close enough to eat some, and repeat this a few times, the Magpie will remember them and stop swooping. Magpies can develop something of an affinity with people and have a long memory. They're a pretty cool bird when they're not being a child-terrorising pest.

I've always wondered about magpies.. if you got a lightweight, toy badminton racket and just whack it a few times. Would it injure the bird? Would the bird take the L and leave you alone?

Vermonter here. The difference between villages and towns is weird-- villages are designated areas WITHIN towns that are particularly populated, since towns can be fairly spread out, but a lot of villages have disincorporated and reverted to full town control. Since tourism is such a large part of Vermont's economy, if a village is well-known enough it tends to stick around, even if all the mailing addresses and real political power is in the name of the town. It's weird!

Slugnoid

usually you dont see them coming though. sneaky bastards will normally wait for you to pass then swoop up at you from behind. you only usually find out you're getting swooped when you hear the snap of their beak in your ear.

Adam Bojak

Maybe the towns are just the villages we made along the way. Also: I live in Buffalo, and I never even heard that story. Thanks for keeping me in the local loop!
