Hypotheses like professors, when they are seen not to work any longer in the laboratory, should disappear.

― Henry Edward Armstrong

Dr. Elena Vasquez pressed her badge against the scanner, watching the heavy steel door slide open with a pneumatic hiss. The Meridian Research Institute had been shuttered for weeks, but the board needed someone to assess the remaining equipment before the facility’s permanent closure.

The fluorescent lights flickered overhead, casting erratic shadows across rows of pristine laboratory benches. Everything appeared normal at first glance---beakers arranged in perfect order, computers humming quietly in standby mode, research notes still scattered across workstations as if their authors had simply stepped away for coffee.

But Elena noticed the smell immediately. Beneath the sharp tang of disinfectant lay something else, something organic and wrong. She moved deeper into the facility, her footsteps echoing in the unnatural silence.

In Laboratory C, she found Dr. Hoffman’s final notes. The handwriting grew increasingly erratic across the pages: “Day 47: The cellular structure continues to adapt… unprecedented regenerative properties… must document the changes…” The entries devolved into illegible scrawls, punctuated by strange diagrams that hurt to look at directly.

Elena’s breath caught when she reached the specimen storage room. The preservation tanks lined the walls like glass coffins, their contents floating in amber fluid. But these weren’t the typical tissue samples she expected. The things in the jars pulsed with their own rhythm, growing visibly larger as she watched.

Her radio crackled to life. “Dr. Vasquez, you need to evacuate immediately. We’ve been monitoring the facility’s biometric sensors. Something’s still alive in there. Something that shouldn’t be.”

Elena backed toward the exit, but the specimens had begun to sing---a low, harmonic vibration that seemed to resonate in her bones. The glass containers started to crack, hairline fractures spreading like spider webs. In the growing darkness, she finally understood why the research team had never left.

They had simply changed.
