Japanese "A" is a clean "Ah", pronounced like the a in "father". In english, the a in "gang" or your name "dan" is more like an Ä than an actual A :D English vowels often glide into another one, which is called a diphtong: great example is my, (mai) or no (nou) Big thing to avoid is pronouncing E or O like in english. good approximation are that "e" is pronounced like the e in "get"; o like the o in "often" IMO japanese prounciation is very easy to learn the basics of, reading/writing is very hard. Hiragana has 46 letters, katakana has 46, Kanji has like over 50.000... though only like 1k-3k are "needed" for comfortable reading afaik.
