Doing something real different this month! Taking a break from all the recurring characters and storylines and gonna work on a standalone piece that'll be a bit different from my other work, with no narrative at all. This scene is inspired by a conversation I had with a close friend of mine who lives up in rural New Hampshire. He was describing to me how his wife ignores him sexually, how he's a bit of a punching bag for his family, and how he's starved for male companionship and recognition. I think there are men in this situation all over the place around there, and it made me really want to create a scene that centers a dude trapped and devalued like that, and gives him a spotlight on all those things: his masculinity, eroticism, sexuality, and power. My goal will be to present this in a way that makes that statement without any campiness or irony, and doesn't feel like a cheesy advertisement or something. I've already ditched a ton of sketched out ideas that felt like they were heading that direction, or didn't capture the idea of focusing and centering this guy properly. This is a weird one for me you guys! I struggle to even put my motivation for this into words. Hopefully that didn't read too clumsy. I included two potential lighting setups here - one more late afternoon autumn with blustery clouds, and another at dusk during the blue hour with flat moody lighting. Which is your favorite? Which supports what I'm going for here better? 🥬

See, this here... This is a huge part of what's so great about following your artistic output. You don't HAVE to have words for what you do. What you said here is more than enough. Your art will completely fill in all the remaining details. This is very, very cool, friend. I appreciate your candor and your vulnerability.

I would be more inclined for the late afternoon. A bit of orange feeling. The idea of things setting, life settling, but there still being a fiery glow in the world. Something akin to that.

Personally, I love this. I quite like the dusk vibe. I feel that it kind of adds to that feeling of being trapped, at least with a blustery day you can see and feel it, but nobody really feels comfortable heading towards darkness because you can't see what's in it. I dunno if that would require giving him some light source or maybe fireflies?

Cordial

Interesting piece, can't wait to see where this goes. I feel like the cloudy sky has that more trapped and isolated feeling, contrasted with an open sky that usually indicates freedom. And I hope your friend finds happiness.

Wolfhunter

Exited to see the final result. I like your motivation behind this piece. Sounds more emotionally driven.

HandsomeDevil64

Agree. There should be a representation of his current situation, but also that there is a light he can follow to bring himself to a brighter shared community.

Jon Goerner

I like the uncertainty of the late afternoon sky. And I love the concept!

slf-unt

Ooh I like the idea of the more subdued dusk lighting for this concept. Great idea and quite interested to see how this goes!

John

I love this concept! I think that the late afternoon with some winds fits better for me. Plus some sunlight gives the idea of hope and warmth.

amphithundr

I’m excited for this one

David Newman

I vote late afternoon. Looking forward to either.

John Anderson

My vote is for late afternoon. And your premise isn't so far off base, Celery! Plenty of men like him out there...

Celery Man

Thank you for saying that!! 💚💚 Usually it's easier for me to come up with a caption, haha. I think the motivations behind this one are a little more complicated than usual

Celery Man

Would it change your mind to hear that the vision for the late afternoon setup would be blue sky with blustery clouds and autumn foliage?

Celery Man

Thank you sir!! I am attracted to the dusk one too - imagine orange windows glimmering behind him in the house. The part I maybe don't like about that idea is that the dimness of the lighting would suggest a sort of secrecy which is the opposite of what I want to give this guy in this scene.

Celery Man

I wonder if a midday overcast sky is something I should consider too! Like not blue hour dusk, but more like gray overcast autumn daytime. And thank you for saying that 💚 luckily I think my friend is in a (mostly) ok place, but hearing his story definitely inspired the feelings behind this piece.

Celery Man

Definitely!! A lot moreso than what I do typically. I was worried you guys would find this cringe or boring or whatever. But I wanted to take a swing at it!!

Celery Man

Thank you!! That's an interesting way of framing that dusky moody one - uncertainty. Might be a good thing to pursue

Celery Man

Thank you sir!! If I do that dusk one it'll definitely be challenging., to avoid it just looking flat and boring 😬

Celery Man

Thanks man!! The late afternoon with windy clouds was my original vision - something about that feels so new englandy in the autumn!

Celery Man

Glad to hear it, I was hoping this would resonate with some of you!!

Celery Man

Noted!! I hope I can deliver on this one for you guys 💚

Celery Man

Far too common I fear! If the straight guys in my peer groups are anything to judge by...

There are some elements of composition that would change the feeling of it. Blustery clouds and blue sky but he is bathed in orange light and surrounded by autumn foliage could read more hopeful. Light standing against surrounding darkness. But if he his bathed in blue and cooler tones it may come off as internalizing, succumbing to the situation around him. I could see something where the sky above is dark and blustery. The foliage around him is autumn colors. He is bathed in the last light of the sunset (sun setting ahead of him or from the direction of the viewer). As you look from bottom up its light up against the darkness.

Hufox9

Might be really wordy but it has my brain cranky. I trust you will find what speaks to you.

Landyn

This is going to be a hot one. I wish I could draw like this.

Clinton Davis

So beautiful, so true as well. There used to be so many organizations and fraternities that adult men could join to help with this, but they're no longer fashionable for whatever reason. Lodge nights and hiking clubs have lost out to binge watching or sports on TV

reterosexual

True. Unless you give him a light source, maybe? He carries the light that symbolises his owning that side of him, shedding the secrecy, etc? I don't know, I am but a spectator and you are the artist, good sir! Whatever you make will look fantastic

Yẹmi Oreb

Hard to decide, but I’m leaning towards the dusk one. It feels like it portrays the feeling of “even if everything seems status quo, I’m keeping this devalued feeling to myself”

Caternary Games

I feel like the first one feels like a presentation of the central figure due to the lighting shining right on him and the shadows kinda framing him - not quite a celebration, but somewhere in that vein. Doing the emotion on him shown as a counter to that could be interesting. On the other hand, the second one highlights him in a way that almost frames him from below, as if he's being surrounded and standing tall despite the self-doubt. Both have appeal, but I think I resonate with the second more

Steven Nokes

I like the dusk scene, still frustrated at the end of a hard day on the farm

Benjamin

Ah man, that's very endearing and understandable a situation, man. I think countless men feel that way.

Arthur Charles

It's refreshing to see someone discuss this openly and in the same stroke -- no pun intended -- to create a piece of art about it. I think we live in an era where many men go silently devalued, emasculated, and depressed, and can rarely, if ever, discuss it with someone else.

Mac Foraday

I've given some male attention to those lonely guys out in rural areas ;)
