Tim Burtons Batman Returns ended up being not the creative direction (box office return) that Warner Brothers wanted. So in response to that we got a pretty significant tone shift for the next entry, Batman Forever directed by Joel Schumacher and now starring Val Kilmer as Bruce Wayne. And it worked! Financially. To clarify: When Mason talks about action figures, he means he’s a grown man who plays with toys. Imagine that – imagine being a grown man who goes onto eBay to buy old toys, then takes a photo of one of them to use as a profile picture. What a sad, lonely, wretch of a man that must be.

Incidentally, Tom Scott on Youtube did a video on the etymology of Gotham. Short version; it was, and still is, a village in England where there was a folktale about villagers pretending to be mad to discourage the king from visiting. Then later Washington Irving of Sleepy Hollow fame started using it to refer to New York, which caught on and became a slang name for the city. Then the story goes that Bill Finger saw it in a phonebook and chose it for Batman which originally was just set in New York. When I was doing my own research into this a while ago I came across some articles about the village’s road signs being stolen and police ‘suspecting’ that comic book fans may be involved.
