SDC! it's a release day - and now for something completely different - you can listen to 'mine' *here*

this song was SDC demo no.83, from feb of last year. I went to Copenhagen by myself for a week to do some writing w a writer/producer there. my sessions with the other writer were fun but the real value of that trip turned out to just spending some proper time on my own - sitting with my own thoughts as I walked around the city and pottered around my tiny air bnb. the airbnb had a guitar amp (sick) so noodling on the rubber bridge guitar I'd brought with me was extra fun and on my second evening there I sat down on the floor with it and 'mine' quickly poured out.

I'd wanted to write this exact song for a few years. I feel like those who get this song really get it and it's almost sad when anyone does (I'm genuinely happy for anyone who can't relate). this song is about an event in my life that felt like it had a before and after, though I didn't realise that at the time. my relationship with intimacy was affected for years to come and for a long time I felt like damaged goods. this is a song about misused power & the effect it can have - about healing and reclaiming that power.

I recorded this final version of the track at Middle Farm (again late at night, which felt weirdly important for the mood). we recorded the vocal + guitar as a live performance, straight to tape to stop me from overthinking any of it. 2 weeks later my friend Will + his string quartet went down to the same studio to record some strings for a couple of different artists/tracks and luckily they had a 'slot' free for me - my co-producer Tom wrote an absolutely haunting string arrangement and the 4 players tracked it right then & there. I'm so proud of how it turned out - I'm hopeful we retained the original spirit of the demo, elevating the emotion just a touch with the strings.

this song is feeling TRICKY to promote (because it's so close to home & because the subject matter is so sensitive to others). it's definitely a change in tone from little chaos and kiss ur face! which is exciting to me, because I'm hoping it shows the range of OGII.. but yeah, I'm a little lost with how to tell everyone about this song. if you'd like to help me boost the track & spread the word, here are a few things you can do:

  • start by listening to the song! wherever u stream or download your music : )

  • if you use Spotify, please 'like'/heart the track and add it to a playlist of yours

  • share the track on your insta story - you could 'share' from spotify or if you'd prefer to do your own post I've attached the single artwork & this main press shot to this post! the multilink for all the diff places to listen is here : )

  • thumbs up/comment on/share the 'mine' visualiser / lyric video

  • interact w any of my social posts about the song on insta/tiktok/twitter ! the algorithm is increasingly savage and every little helps with reaching new people (or just reaching existing followers tbh)

love u guys. thank u for always showing this song so much care - your response to it on here is a huge part of what made me want to see it through and give it a place on the upcoming record - so I really can't thank you enough

This is so beautiful. I've already commented on YouTube as well, but here it's a bit safer. I feel this song absolutely balances the bangers and I'm glad you are not shying away from difficult songs. That string arrangement really punches you in the gut. Having been close to a few to many cases of women hurt by trash men, I'm hoping this can be a good conversation starter to talk about things that should be blindingly obvious. The following was posted by someone I follow and somehow this really resonated with me: "If we want better men, and we certainly do, we need to take better care of our boys. Women can help with this, they really can, but ultimately, it's up to us men who have survived our masculinity, to the extent that we have, to serve. Do it today. Even just a little. Mentor a boy or a young man who could use even a *semi*-healthy male figure in their life. It makes all the difference. It did for me, and I've sought to pay it forward. You can, too." I've seen too much toxic masculinity and I have been a victim of it too. I hope this song opens some eyes and empowers women to process their grief and know that their bodies are theirs and theirs alone. I'm glad you wrote this and sad you could. This shit HAS to stop
