here's a lil idea I've been noodling with and writing with my friend Sean over zoom - the first time I've tried that. we got down a verse that I love but got stuck at the chorus, so I just wanted to get down a quick recording of how far we got to before then. I have a nice feeling about this one.. I think it should live in a very 'new friends' world.. a chilled transition track, or maybe even a last song on the album. do you like when artists end an album with an intimate one or do you like a big triumphant finish?

lyrics:

first kiss on the very last day

near miss, a rocket to first base

my hair got caught in his mouth

I wonder where that boy is right now

I, am made up of all these memories right in front of me

I, thought about it the other night

I told you that my mind was made up[

they put the chairs on top of the tables

they closed the bar when we were still there

I look back and I'm so grateful that

you weren't a dick, you could have been, I don't know what I'd do

if it hadn't been you?

I think albums should tell a story, so where this song fits depends on that story. Without knowing that, my hunch is that this sounds like a mid album transition. If you put it at the end, the vibe I get is that I'm left wanting to know what happens next, like the story's unfinished.... As for the song itself, it does sensitively capture a moment many of us will have been in. Perfect.

Some albums I love end with a soft song and it works so nicely but I feel like it very much depends on the context of the song. It can depend on the story of the album if there is one, but I'm currently thinking about New Years Day ending Reputation. Reputation didn't really have a story per say but New Years Day was such a great ending because the song was about being nastoligic that things are ending/ over. I've seen a lot of comments about soft vs a big finish so I thought I'd bring up an alternative perspective

One of my favorite endings to an album ever is Fine Line by Harry Styles. It begins very soft and simple but it grows into something that feels very big and full while somehow still remaining intimate. It’s a final song that lets the story of the album that came before it really settle in while also feeling like a culmination of the entire album, encompassing all the emotions from the other songs.

For me, it really depends on the feel of the rest of the album! An album with more of a powerful feel overall rather than a chill one could definitely benefit from a soft finish. That being said, if it’s mainly a chill feel overall, a triumphant end could give a sense of ‘it’s all building to the finish’ along with a feel of finality. Really depends on the kind of story you want to tell! Hope that you’re doing okay!

im not sure whether i prefer an intimate, soft end or a triumphant end to an album (my music taste is kinda all over the place) i do love albums that have a certain theme / tell a story so obviously it depends on that. but i rly like the vibe of this memo and i can deffo imagine this as the end track of an album < 333

Wow

This has the makings of a solid intimate closer, just depends on what you want and the rest of the album in front of it.

i think i do like a soft ending because it finishes it off and feels like a warm hug of an album but also a big finish could make for a legendary album
