hey secret demo club. happy sunday!

I just wanted to say thank you sO much for the patreon comments on the video I posted on here this week - they made my heart burst, by far the craziest reaction to anything I’ve ever posted on patreon. and for good reason I think.. it’s what I’ve been building up to for a long long time now, one big stop on a journey that started a long time ago now. ☺️ if you missed the video & have 10 mins, go give it a watch. the summary is I’m working on my first album (!) i’m setting the recording dates in next week (!) and i’ll be releasing the album through my own label ‘new friends’ (!!!).

can I ask you guys a random question?

  • which artists (past or current) do you think I sound like/ do I remind you of?

I ask because firstly i’m curious.. and also i’m committing to spending some time next week really listening to music.. some that I know, some I don’t know, and making notes. when I listen to songs I love I want to think about why I really love them.. is it the production? the lyrics? a guitar tone? the drums? a specific rhythm? how the vocal is recorded? the *vibe*? and whilst I’m committed to not referencing anything too closely in the making of this album, I’d like to start by listening to a few artists in the same musical universe as myself. and deciding who that is is a hard thing to do when it’s ME.

also - a less indulgent question - what are you guys reading/listening to/watching right now? I feel like I’ve been feeding my brain with so much good stuff lately & I’d love it to continue when I finish what I’m currently on! I’m reading a book called ‘exciting times’ by an Irish author called Naoise Dolan (so good), listening to the new HAIM album (soo good) & watching a BBC/HBO show called ‘I May Destroy You’ (SOOO GOOD). I highly recommend all of them - I will say I May Destroy You contains some pretty heavy themes -sexual assault- so not for everyone but just an *amazing* story with incredible characters, told perfectly. yeah, if there's anything you guys are digging lately, leave it in a comment below for me & the rest of the SDC to check out.

I‘m currently listening to all the songs they played in the background in Sex Education. Most of them are by Ezra Furman but there are also others like older songs. Anyway, their choice of music is sooo great, they managed to capture the vibe of every scene so perfectly. There’s one song in particular that I looove, sadly you can only find it on youtube if you search for "ezra furman whatever" but this song truly breaks my little heart!!!! Also I discovered another great artist called Sara Kays just yesterday and I really enjoy the feelings her songs give me and also her voice is so cool. If you haven’t already watched it I‘d highly recommend the BBC series Sherlock!! Love it! xx

Currently listening to Maris, and Genessa (both have new singles out). Currently reading Octoberland by Thana Niveau. And watching Deep Space 9 for the umpteenth time. When the world is going to hell, rewatch your favourites. 😂💙🖖🏻🤘🏻

I feel like there's an element of Alanis Morissette to your sound, I think its the rawness of what you write and how you perform it. I've always been a huge Alanis fan so I adore that part of your music. And funny you should mention Haim as I've been really into their newest album and these songs really remind me a lot of you. And Hayley Williams' newer stuff too! Those last two references are more in terms of production but also vocally you have similarities with Danielle - your delivery is quite a lot like her! And Hayley vocally and in terms of range and the melodies you write! Anyway this is a ramble, best of luck with the album you're going to smash this <3 xxx

Stumped with the first question, but I'll keep my ears pealed. Definitely mirroring the 'OG is unique' sentiment, though I’m looking forward to checking out some of the artists other people have recommended. +1 for A Beautifully Foolish Endeavour. Only a couple chapters in, but absolutely loving it so far. Really digging Maya Delilah’s new EP ‘Oh Boy’, feel like that might be right up your street 😁

karissa

you sound closest to miya folick (cost your love and leave the party specifically)

KLARA

Love these questions :) At the moment I am listening a lot to Phoebe Bridgers. Check her out if you haven't heard her album 'Stranger in the Alps' and also her recent single 'Garden song" ENJOY!!!

I can't think of music artists that sound like you, your style is quite distinctive. I have been listening to a spanish singer my dad used to play all the time when we were little. He is called Pedro Guerras and I'm listening to his album 'Vidas'. I am reading Orlando by Virginia Woolf and watching The Office and This is us.

You write, sing and play beautifully expressive music Orla. People are struggling to name who you sound like because you're quite unique! Maybe a hint of Hayley Williams, Joni Mitchell somewhere. Just started to read Conversations with Friends by Sall Rooney.

maybe a cross between phoebe bridgers, dodie, & alvvays? your music is so unique; it's hard to compare it to anything. but 'figure it out' reminds me of this italian song by a band i found out about because of the sdc server. i think the lead singer is a fan of yours & she posted it in self promo? anyway! https://youtu.be/pEnmgv6uXXc this is the song. i really recommend it. just like another person who commented, i'm reading "a beautifully foolish endeavor" by hank green! 10/10 would recommend the first book in the series, which is called "an absolutely remarkable thing." i think you'd like it especially because it explores a theme i’m sure you've had a lot of experience with: how internet fame can drastically change your life. plus, the main character is a queer woman & i just.... 😭 it's so great! as far as music goes, i've been listening to a lot of ghost bc, verdena, phoebe bridgers, & (of course) orla gartland 😊

Thanks for the alvvays tip. Listening to them now and they're definitely going into my rotation!
