OK, finally. your very late June demo is here! thanks for your patience y'all - these last few weeks presented obstacle after obstacle but I trucked on between shows and now have a song for u; it's called 'boys in bands'.
dodie played a festival in Norwich at the beginning of summer and there were a lot of bands playing - no offence to these bands but one look around the catering area confirmed that aesthetically these boys were almost all identical. rolled up loose jeans & trainers, maybe a moustache, a little beanie. because I didn't know one band for another it seemed at times like these 50 or so boys were all sort of in the one huge mega band.
the 'dressing rooms' at the festival were separated by walls of fabric so everything was audible, so when one of the band boys was having a conversation on his phone it was impossible not to hear every word. bless this lad - I'm sure he was lovely - but his side of this conversation was hitting every cliche in the book; "I'm sorry babe". "I didn't mean to hurt you, you're my girl", "I can change' etc etc.
I don't know that girl and I never will.. but it did get me thinking about how hard it is to watch your friend fall into a trap with someone you're almost certain is bad news before it even begins. so I wrote about that, had a lot of fun doing it and ended up with a mix of fiction & real experiences with friends and their various pursuits.
I started with the synth parts (on the Juno 106 at middle farm studios), added guitars in galway, tracked the lead vocal in limerick and the BVs in limerick. a real collage of vibes from totally different settings! as always, let me know what u think in a comment. thank u to Wouter for his help - I didn't have access to monitors to check my mix and Wouter was super helpful with the final stage! as always u can stream the track from the patreon site/mobile app (where you can save offline & to your podcasts app via the RSS feed) or u can download the attached mp3 for keepsies.
PS thank u to everyone who came to my favourite show of all time last night I cannot actually believe that happened.
lyrics:
it was a tuesday
we were out that night
when i look back now
i get terrified
in a basement
by candlelight
crowded in
you locked eyes
i grabbed you
it was time to go
your mood changed
in the taxi home
it was different
ever since then you’ve been different
you loved him
it was hard to watch
cause he loved himself
and he couldn’t stop
baby it’s a tale as old as time!
I see you caught in a crisis
trying to pour your heart out
like you’re cut up and divided
and is he really worth it?
oh i’m just dying to tell you
that it gets better than this
my love
there’s more to life than crying over boys in bands
you’re an angel
and i’m sure of it
why do we put up with this bullshit
we could drive out
to another town
we could stay out all night if you’re
if you’re down
but i just can’t
do it all again
watch it all repeat
with another friend
baby it’s a tale as old as time!
I see you caught in a crisis
trying to pour your heart out
like you’re cut up and divided
and is he really worth it?
oh i’m just dying to tell you
that it gets better than this
my love
there’s more to life than crying over boys in bands
