HELLO BEAUTIES.

How are we all? :)

Here's a video for you. It's long (what's new!) but I hope you like it! If you have any comments or questions be sure to leave 'em in a comment below!

I'm on the way back to London after a couple of days at home in Dublin. On Friday I played a small gig which was a lot of fun, then had a sweet sunny Saturday with some of my tiny tiny cousins.

On Sunday I went to visit my Grandad in hospital. Sadly he's been diagnosed with dementia recently so it was a little tough, but although forgetful he's so kind and lovely still.. it was such a relief to see that shine through. At one point he leaned in with a smile and asked me if I'd been "keeping up with Orla lately". I beamed back and said yes, she's been doing great. :) Honestly I've been so lucky with Grandparents and family members so far in life.. I had all 4 of 'em growing up (even a 5th for a while, my awesome Great-Granny Molly!). Watching someone you love fade with age is hard, but something I know everyone goes through at some point, and if anything I'm a lucky sucker for having gone this long without the experience. I've felt pretty about it down these last couple days, but hopefully it'll get easier to deal with & think about.

:) but yeah, that's me! Tomorrow I've got a writing session/jam session/who even knows with this legend: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCafxR2HWJRmMfSdyZXvZMTw - he's a boy called Sam who makes modular synths, among many other awesome inventions. I'm intrigued and excited.

Feel for ya kiddo. We take our health so much for granted and sadly the big D, like the big C seems to be picking up pace in our Western World. Lookin forward to listening/viewing this when I get home. Thx so much for your continuing outputs, thoughts and stuff.

Frances Wilde

Ah! this was so interesting. god, so much effort goes into each track it's crazy

Alex Dowse

It's so nice to see you being positive about what is going on with him. Though I'm sorry you have to go through it. I hope you still get to have more wonderful times with everyone, and it's probably safe to say you'll have already made everyone super proud with what you've accomplished so far and how you are as a person towards others :)

Alex Dowse

Holy wow, 25 minutes. Thank you for taking away my Tuesday boredom.

My weekend was amazing because Vidcon happened and wow, it was such an intense experience! I met dodie!! I sang with her! Her signature is now in my ukulele next to yours :) I told her that I've been a fan of you for 8 years (she answered 'same' lol) and that I discovered her thanks to you! She was so lovely!! Highlight of the weekend for sure! I told her to come do a gig in Paris and bring you with her :p I also met a lot of others creators and made some friends volunteering! And Wouter was there too! We chated here and there, he brought me a water bottle when I was working (🖖) but we forgot to take a pic together haha A part from that, I'm happy you're feeling better with the sun (I'm feeling better too). Sorry to hear about your grandad 😔 I'm gonna watch this when I get home. xx

Drew Tepper

Sorry about grandad *hugs* it is hard to see someone like that... I will be watching the (long) vid in a bit! Hope all is generally well!✌️❤️

Neil Backhurst

Thanks for the insight into how you put your tracks together. I have to agree the production quality on your songs is deffo getting better each time. Really sorry to hear about your Grandad. I went through similar with mine. Perhaps "Keeping up with Orla" could be a good song title. (or title for the album!!) :-)

Michael Klütgens

I really love this insight into the mechanics of the song and how it all works to come together to this cool piece of music! Sorry to hear about your granddad! :( I hope you have a great time at the jam/writing-session and never lose that joy for creating music :) My life has been master-thesis-writing non-stop. I can't stop thinking that in a few months for the first time in my life I will no longer be in any sort of educational institution. It will be weird to quit uni and the lovely people there! Best wishes, Michael :)

This was really really interesting to watch, despite the shaky camera angles. You should present some kind of (very) ameteur info-videos on production. Seriously though, really interesting seeing the behind the scenes side of actually mixing the demo and how many tiiinyy little sounds all come together into the final product. #Inspiration Really sorry to hear about your Grandad, mine's got dementia too and it sadly doesn't get any easier, only worse. Just really have to cherish the time you get together when he's himself because it slowly gets less and less, i'll find myself having a chat with my Grandad and half way through i notice he starts to referring to my brothers/dad or other family in the third person because he forgets who i am and thinks he's just chatting with someone else. Really sad but keep your chin up! We just have to do our best with the time we have in all aspects of life.. for example i could have tidied my room in the last 25 minutes but i watched this instead, who's really to blame for that one? (You?). Keep it up O.G xxx

Going through dementia with my dad. Thusly why I'm usually late to listen to demos and missing out on the live chats. It's a horrible disease. Hearing some OG helps a lot. I didn't get to comment in the actual demo post, but it was fantastic. Love it. Really. I'd love to eventually get into this type of recording with my own music, but really have no clue on where to start. Not having much free time doesn't help matters either. It's a little daunting, but glad to see you're making headway and improving your sound as you go. Lifeline belongs on the radio.(amongst others) How do fans make this happen? Anyone?

Orla Gartland

Hello lovely. So sorry to hear that, I've no doubt that you're wonderful with your Dad and helping wherever you can, but it can break even the toughest and kindest of us, I guess! I hope you're holding up and getting some time to yourself here & there, that's the only thing keeping my poor Grandma sane right now! It shouldn't be daunting, the idea of getting into a bit of recording. It's great fun, and a great escape to even make something super simple. If you have a macbook Garageband is a free software, it's awesome and comes with lots of sweet pre-loaded instruments and loops, all you need is a mic, an instrument and a bit of time to get used to it. Thanks so much for the kind words on Lifeline, too! Radio as I understand it is a bit of a minefield, really. Artists/labels generally pay folks called radio pluggers to get their songs on the airwaves! But luckily I've just signed up for a 3 month trial with a lovely manager, so once I finally get some of these songs properly recorded, he should be able to help me with getting out there more. :) xx

Orla Gartland

Hey buddy sorry for the mega late reply! MEGA sorry for shaky cam cam, I need to figure out some kind of screen-grabbing software so I can record without it being such a stressful thing to watch!

Orla Gartland

weird, huh?! and this is still a fairly basic demo, think of how much the proper producers got goin on in their tracks! nuts

Orla Gartland

aw man I can't wait to hear about vidcon! will organise a hangout for this week and if you can make it I can't wait to hear it aaaaaallll :) also YAY to Wouter!

Orla Gartland

Hey lovely! Thanks for the lovely words, you're too good. Aw man, hope the thesis is good and that you're controlling it, not it controlling you! Fingers and toes crossed for a smooth transition from education to the big, not-so-bad world. x

How did I miss this? I suck as a fan... I'm going to blame it on the day job. You hope somebody appreciated this? I'm your someone. I loved geeking out on your geeking out on production. I'm feeling my way through this stuff as well. And you're way ahead of me... but that's good for ME ... because that means i can learn something from you. Like the bit on why panning helps ... how to use it and what to use it on. I get SO frustrated getting vocals to stand out just right, not to overpower, and not to get lost. I'll be playing with this. Thank you! I loved seeing the song broken down into its parts ... that's one of my favorite things.... I really enjoy tracking and mixing ... because ... well I'm a geek, what can I say? I love making music and I love watching people make music. And I'm an IT guy so that puts me a bit over the top then, too. I did note the octave-high vocal in the second verse and at first I thought it sounded a little like a subtle steel drum (one thing that happens to vocals when you use electronic shifts - it doesn't quite sound human ... it can sound cool in the right places ... not the sound I've wanted so far in anything I do ... but I've used it to turn my electric acoustic into a "bass".) Funny thing I almost thought maybe you should add some steel drum but it wouldn't fit with the mood of the song. Anyway, this is one of my favorite posts you've done. Really enjoyed it, and glad you're chuffed over how this song is going, because you should be!
