HEY ALL.

So you may or may not know that I am totally obsessed with podcasts. As someone who spends so much of an average week on public transport podcasts have been such a game changer. Delving into a lil' episode of my fave lil' pod makes all that previously empty time feel so meaningful, now I look forward to an hours bus ride (for reals). So whether you're looking to sink yo teeth into something new to listen to on your travels or something interesting to listen to before bed, I've got a bunch you should check out.. (I've mentioned these to a few of you already but wanted to put everything in one post!)

So here we go:

Orla's official podcast list for The Secret Demo Club™: (complete w subcategories)

Music!

- Song Exploder (artists and writers breaking down the process of writing one of their songs.. scroll down the episode list and start with the songs ones you know!)

- Switched on Pop (wonderfully geeky assessments of trends in pop songs)

- Midnight Chats (in-depth chats with artists)

- And the Writer Is (in-depth interviews with big songwriters!)

Storytelling:

- This American Life (a new topic every week..each ep made up of 2/3 stories all linked with a theme)

- Strangers (one of my all time faves - each episode is a story told/presented by Lea Thau AKA the woman with the most gorgeous, soothing voices I've ever heard)

- Mortified (people getting up in front of live audiences and telling embarrassing stories!)

- Serial (series 1) (a murder investigation.. ooh)

- S-Town (another murder investigation.. ooh.. well, it kinda is. you gotta listen to find out really)

~OTHER~

- My Dad Wrote a Porno (funniest one in the entire universe ugh it could brighten any day up - a guy called Jamie and his two friends read through an erotic novel his Dad wrote)

- How I Built This (interviewing the folk behind masssive companies! V interesting, again start with the ones you know then try the others if you enjoy em!)

- The Mystery Show  (Starlee, one of the loveliest humans i've ever listened to solving random mysteries. so silly and heartwarming)

..that's it! Would love to hear recommendations if anyone has any, whether they're niche or totally universal! I'm always flying through these things so I need new series to sink my teeth into :) would also love to hear feedback from anyone that checks these podcasts out and wants to talk more about any of them!

I know this is like a year old but if u like students rambling about movies then listen to The Good Bit podcast. It’s my friend Chris’ and I’ve been on it a lot, it’s funny I think xx

Robby

I so have to check those out, sounds like something I'd be in to. Thanks for sharing !

"Song Exploder" sounds cool, I'll check it out. "Mike on Much" is one of my favourite podcasts. They interview artists about their life's and about their approach to making music (kind of like Song Exploder but with a greater focus on them as musicians rather than individual songs). The hosts also discuss hilarious situations/stories that they've been in.

Ita McHugh

Science Vs, Reply All (anything from gimlet media really), The Moth and Criminal are some of my favourites. Thanks for the recommendations. I can't wait to check them out.

I feel like I listen to a lot of Podcasts, but I only listen to stuff from two companies(?) I don't know if there's any other wrestling fans on here but if so Inside The Ropes are wonderful. But the main one is Rooster Teeth. For non-RT fans, maybe The Rooster Teeth Podcast is the one to go for, but I'd also say... Always Open. Mostly a female podcast though usually one of the guys from the wide world of Rooster Teeth will be there and they don't hold back on topics, the topics come from fan submitted questions, from sexual, to random questions like "The first time you blah blah blah" And the sexual ones aren't just the safe "How do I do this?" It's a range of stuff from one guy wanting to know how to become more comfortable as a cross dresser and how the podcast people do things that make them feel more comfortable, to people never having had it, to dealing with sex during periods and so many more stuff. It's not always sexual, sometimes it can be more tame stuff or something else. There was an episode with Kati Morton as a guest and it was an episode all about mental health and it was good to hear how the people I watch every day all the time deal with their own issues and such.

Alex Dowse

Oh and all their stuff is in video form too. Rooster Teeth Poscast, Always Open & On The Spot (game show) is under Rooster Teeth. Dude Soup is under FunHaus (that's more of a bring up a topic for the week, like YouTube demonetising stuff or other big news and they're quite good arguments from many perspectives Off Topic is under Achievement Hunter

Thank you so much for those recommendations, I have been looking for new podcasts lately :) And to all the people who are suggesting podcasts in here!

Dan Bullock

A few on there I haven't listened to before, thanks for the recommendations :) My personal favourite is 99 Percent Invisible. It's very loosely based on design, but generally they're just really interesting stories about a huge range of things. I'm assuming that if you're in to This American Life you've already checked out Radiolab & Freakonomics, but if not... Loving your music Orla, keep up the great work <3

Sarah Rackliff

Beautiful/Anonymous hosted by Chris Gethard ~~~random anonymous people call in and they have a chat with Chris for an hour. A range of topics~ some devastating, some uplifting, some hilarious~~it's amazing to hear how vulnerable people can be. ALSO highly recommend Heavyweight and Invisibilia.

Mian Cowell

Checking in waaaaaaay late but along with 99% invisible I also recommend 10000 Hertz about the science in sounds and the BBC radio 4 comedy podcast too. If you like heavy history discussion then BBC does In Our Time, there's also Stuff You Should Know & Stuff You Missed In History Class. If you like a really personal close look on world news then From Our Own Correspondent is brilliant, it interviews people who actuallly live in warzones etc.

Madeline Cooper

I know this post is so old but I just joined this club and I'm playing catch up! Also recently obsessed with podcasts, apart from the once you've mentioned my absolute favourite is Oprah's Super Soul Sessions - full of interviews with amazing humans often about their creative process and so worth listening to! My other go-to is Philosophize This! Some of the longer ones can be hard to swallow, but ones on moodiness, insecurity, etc. are suuuper interesting. Thank you so much for sharing your favs! <3
