hello SDC! greetings my beautiful angels

how are you doing? I've had an.. OK start to the year. many changes are happening around me & it feels like I'm trying my best to hold onto the sides !

I've made some really positive strides forward w OGII so far this month - a few songs have reached their FINAL MIX STAGE, which is so so exciting. The track production line is moving along and my brain is sparking away with ideas day & night :') I'm also shooting the ALBUM COVER THIS MONTH ! it's starting to get very real, y'all...

another fun thing I've been doing this month to NOURISH MY LITTLE MUSICAL SOUL - I've been taking part in Adrianne Lenker's songwriting course ! it's made up of a series of zoom 'lectures', writing prompts and song share sessions where others in the course listen to your homework songs and give feedback. I feel like I have some experience creating spaces within my own community (this here patreon, my socials, the livestreams & zoom calls I do for gold tier patrons, etc) and it's been so nice to be part of something community-based.. from this side, if that makes sense. and not feel like I'm creating/organising the space and thinking.. gosh I hope everyone's OK & having a good time !!! etc. the lessons are great (she is just next level wow) and I feel like I'm learning a lot about how others perceive/approach songwriting, something I've done so instinctively my whole life.

there's a few songs I've written as part of the course that I may share with y'all at some point.. (one could even end up as our January demo, who knows!). here is a song that wasn't written with one of the course prompts but was written in the same sitting as one of one of the homework songs. sometimes songs come in pairs for me.. it's often as if writing the first song takes the pressure off the second one to be.. all-singing, all-dancing & firing on all cylinders! so the second song in a pair for me is often very simple & rarely reaching to be anything that it's not.

I uploaded part of this idea last week.. this is simply a continuation of that same song, with a new title and a 'chorus' / refrain of sorts on the end. do you think it should return to the first bit / verse or go to a third,  new section again? I'm all ears with that + any other thoughts you may have : )

LYRICS:

call it proximity effect

i’m feeling all the things you felt

10 minutes later

i’m broken too

a neighbouring window

identical view

right now I could hug like your brother

make jokes like your mother

I'm plasticine, be whatever you need me to be

Call it an empathetic rush

Or call it caring way too much

The answer is clear

If you want my advice

It’s easy to say

When it isn’t my life

watch me try

push up the faders

scrunch up the paper

fumble my words

like a weary narrator

there isn’t anything good

to say to you

The only thing harder

Than watching a heart break

Is watching two break from the sideline

There is no winner

When both teams are bitter

No wonder it’s a tough watch, from the sideline

From the sideline

Your voice is so mesmerising 🥹

Georgia Woods

Love how unapologetically melancholic this is, there is no winner when both teams are bitter OUCH yeah,, sooooo excited to see what OG2 has in storrrrre, so excited to see what the whole universe/perspective/aesthetic is too! The year has actually started good! My broken rib is nearly normal and a got a cool tattoo so we’re vibing

Mina Jørgensborg ♪

this made me CRY. you sound so broken and vulnerable, and i just wanna give you the biggest hug. <3

Tsuki Smith

I think my inclination is that I want an additional verse, maybe a little more about the final moments of the witnessed crumbling relationship and then the chorus again to cap it off? I love where this is going though and it could as easily be considered finished as a transitional song on an/the(?) album, though. But I selfishly want to know what role you as the narrator is playing in this, beyond witness to the breakup of what I can assume are two important people in the narrator’s world

Tsuki Smith

Or alternatively, a verse about seeing the start of the relationship to really drive home how it’s so painful to pay witness to a breakup as a third party

Larry Ayres

I'm not sure that you need another verse at all. It seems complete with the last stanza. However, if you did want one, I would add it at the beginning to give more insight into what you are viewing through the neighboring window. It could also be split into 2 songs, one about proximity effect and one about watching hopelessly/helplessly from the sidelines.

Janne

Yes! This will be a perfect song in between something on the album. Great singing as usual, 'proximity effect' is just the perfect concept.

Kit Lammers

I agree with Larry above, I think it doesn’t need another verse. I know you’re not a big fan of the Ukulele but for some reason this song makes me want to hear high notes like tears falling. (Also why is advice so easy to give to others but not take it from ourselves)

Darren Hill

Awww this is lovely, can imagine it over a montage of someone walking around Paris alone. I feel you though, there's been a lot of change for me too at the start of this year. Reminding myself that every change/loss/person who leaves creates space for new exciting projects and people!!

Gareth Hughes

Wow. That’s all SAD and lost. It’s a million miles from ‘I got a new bass’. Don’t forget - brotherly hug coming your way in Manchester - whether you like it or not - even if I have to climb up on stage to get it to you! PS I hope security isn’t that tight. You know the drill, big deep breaths, one at a time. It’s been a long two weeks since your last post. ❤️

Candace Randle

oooh i love the change in the in the "watch me try" section; crazy how a little rearranging of words can make the tone that much more effective. good grief, you're a brilliant writer! anyway,

Candace Randle

* ha, i hit post way too quickly * but anyway, i love the song, it's found a way into my favorites from you. xx

Richard Ridder

Reading you're following an Adrianne Lenker course warms my soul. I love Big Thief. Saw them last year and Buck Meek solo at our summerfestival Noorderzon. Saw you will be touring with Maya Dililah. Been following her on YouTube for at least 2 years. Bring her to Europe!! (and yourself too).

Heather Scott

My friend and my old prof are both taking Adrianne’s class as well, and it sounds amazing! As for the song, I actually quite like it as is. I really like short, sad songs. Like a hit and run haha.

Orla Gartland

richard you know all the artists don’t you ! up & coming or established, you always have the good ones covered. :) would love to do some european shows.. desperate to get back out there

Orla Gartland

gosh Tsuki.. you nailed it, you’ve got it all figured out! I feel very seen & rly appreciate these thoughts

Raf (solo project)

I also did the Lenker course and it was so fun seeing that you were taking part too!! hope you got lots out of it like i did :)
