Trying to fix my leaking chimney has become a monumental task. Sigh.

CTC Extras #25: Stove chimney fix July 30 2017

Comments

David E. Dougherty

So I am left to assume that the cratch cover is canvas and, like a tent, if you touch it when it is wet, it will leak until it dries again. Yes, bad memories there. Oh well, at least you are fixing the chimney when the stove isn't needed. Have you tried to slowly gather in the top of the black bag near the roof and tie it with wire or a shoelace or something before removing the tape? Perhaps that would 'capture' most of the itch in the bag where it belongs.

David Johns

It leaks even without touching! I ended up cutting into the bag half way up then sticking th vacuum cleaner hose in and sucking out the mess, albeit with a lot of frustration as the hose kept sucking up the bag. But it's done now (and the first coat of primer on the hole on the roof)

Matt

Fun! Well if you're into self punishment that is! I assume it's all back together again now? Shockingly it won't be long before all of us with solid fuel stoves will be using them again!

David Johns

Actually it's not back together; took me ages to scrape out the cement between collar and chimney (long story) and then it's been poor weather for the de-rusting and re-painting so I'm waiting to put the last top coat on before I stick the collar back, then re-seal it!
