(Just a still pic) After two years, I finally got round to drilling holes in the bed-frame sides to vent air underneath it and keep things fresh instead of needing to keep the drawers open a bit!

Be interested to know if it works. I'm building my bed at the moment and going with slats rather than what seems to be the standard of lift-out solid panels for exactly this reason - with vents through the bulkhead into the next room.

Mine is slatted so that the bed can extend outwards by a foot but when it's in its compact position, there's not much air space between them so I'm thinking of also drilling some holes in the slats. And maybe also using some of the plastic gridded decking material under the mattress. That said, I have never had a problem with moisture leading to fungus under the bed (!), the only time I had an issue was when the mattress side was pressed up against the boat side and that did get damp, so now I leave a couple of inches between the edge of the boat and the mattress.

Evil inner OCD notes apparent mistake ... grown up and respectful side saunters away whistling .... Have you considered using a mattress underlay?

David Johns

That was not a mistake, it was a test! (OK, it was a mistake). Don't need underlay, the slats enable ventilation to reach it but before the holes there was no path for air to get under.
