By lucky chance I happened to notice my alternator belt was about to fall apart. Of course, I really should have been checking it every day anyway but let's skip over that. Anyway, I changed it.

CTC Extras #48: Alternator belt change, October 2019

I've seen this type of damage on belts before. I only drive diesel vehicles, and I do all my own work, though I am not a certified mechanic or anything. This is damage to the rubber in the belt caused by exposure to diesel. It rots rubber and makes it crumbly and brittle. It mainly does a real number on engine mounts - which is why engine mounts tend to need replacing more often in diesel cars. Interesting that the ribbed side looked terrible, but the other side looked quite good. Looks like the diesel got onto the rib side and not the flat side. You might want to keep a spare set of belts on board at all times, just as a reliability measure. If you break down and can't physically move on from a 2 day or 14 day mooring, what happens?

OK, thanks. That’s useful to know. If you break down, you phone the CRT and explain and they’re fine as long as you’re genuine and not taking the mick. Luckily I do have another spare belt!
