For the final leg of my 2019 autumn cruise, I continued along the Upper Peak Forest canal, south towards Whaley Bridge and Bugsworth basin. The six mile stretch of canal includes two swing bridges and two lift bridges so I shamelessly took advantage of some passing hire boaters to help me through.

No mention of your motor/transmission woes?

Hi David, I was watching some other canal boat videos and came across some folks with a wide beam. They seem to have encounters with rude people. Is there a subset of narrow boaters that do not like wide beam boats?

David Johns

Yes, there are some folk who think widebeams are too big for some canals that they are used on (and occasionally they have a point, with widebeams being taken up what are technically narrow canals though they have enough width for one widebeam to go along but are too narrow to be properly considered wide canals). It is perhaps also thought that widebeams are bought by people to be static liveaboard homes thus their owners may not cruise them much so may not be as capable at handling them as a regular narrowboater. I’m not saying any of this is right, just how some people see them.
