You're lucky to be strong and flexible enough to do that. Not everybody can lift that amount of weight and crouch down. I can but oddly my wife can't and she's 7 years younger than me! I'm inclined to agree with your analogy on the gas hanging around. You'd probably find just hooking them both up without opening the valves, leaving them for half an hour with the lid open would be more than enough. As you say, done for another year all being well.
