Lore-Writer's Blog: A Dragon's First Flight (Patreon)
Content
In the world of Jrakhon, every dragonling must learn to fly. It is not only tradition, but necessary for survival. Flight is as natural for the dragon as swimming is for the drake. Flight is a part of the dragon, a part of the wyvern, and a part of the amphithere, although they each teach their young in different ways. For most dragons, teaching their dragonlings to fly is a tradition, and it often happens soon after hatching because a flightless dragon in the world of Jrakhon is often a dead dragon. This is especially true for the Shadow Scale species.
Shadow Scale hatchlings are slow and clumsy, with cloaking their only defense. Shadow Scales will often take their young on their first flight moments after hatching out of the egg to help them learn to glide. Being natural fliers, Shadow Scales are able to glide and maneuver better than many other species, it is an ability that comes natural to them but still must be learned from a young age. They are also one of the fastest dragons known, with only a few species able to fly faster such as the Singe Crest and other smaller species.
The tradition of teaching hatchlings to fly is known as First Jrakhonflight. When a hatchling is born, one of the parents, often the father, will carry the hatchling to a very high elevation and then let them go. Hatchlings learn soon enough to use their wings as fear is a great motivator, and the alternative is often serious injury. Parents know the risk of jrakhonflight, but it is the only way to ensure their young survive in the harsh and unforgiving world of Jrakhon. The first jrakhonflight is an experience that all dragonlings remember throughout their lives. Whether being dropped at high altitudes or encouraged to jump and glide from a high cliff, each species has their traditions, their customs, and their instincts to guide them. It is what makes each species unique, it is what makes them dragons.

/ooc short story this month as we're hard at work on the open beta. For all the roleplayers out there, we do have plans for adding an /ooc chat into the game later this year and some other rp features we think you'll like.
We hope you all have fun flying and hope your first jrakhonflight is memorable!
