In this video, level designer Zaicho shows us what he has been working on lately. We are still in the greybox phase of the Mega Map as we block out all the areas we will be detailing later with environmental assets. The Mega Map is HUGE, the largest of any survival game we know of. 40km x 40km, or 1600 Square Kilometers / 1000 Square Miles of land and water for players to explore. It is massive.

In UE4, we were going to try to do this via the old mega map system which used 4 16km maps and loaded/unloaded them for players, but with Unreal 5 World Partition and Large World Coordinates (64bit Precision), we are able to make the world seamless as HLOD and areas are streamed in and out automatically.

Unreal 5 has also introduced a new experimental network system that we plan to implement which allows us to double the player count on servers without increasing server computation time.

The mega map continent will only be available in Roleplay servers. Survival servers will feature smaller maps and focus on PvP and survival.

We hope you enjoy this update. Thank you all for your support! With your help, we're making the best dragon game ever! It will be awesome!

Since the map is so big, will there be a flying dragon that can pick up an adult acid spitter so they dont need to run forever if a clan moves?

Adam Clow

So the full map was never intended for pvp survival? What kind of game-mode does "roleplay" imply?

Adam Clow

So the full MORPG experience excludes pvp?

Ameszilla

Maybe there would be like PvP areas. Like a warning would flash on the screen or something. That way the people who like PvP can fight. Or there could be a high risk high reward type thing where you enter this area and risk getting killed but you might get something awesome out of it.

Adam Clow

That would be cool

These videos make me want to decorate the landscape. I’ll have to settle for my Serenitea Pot on Genshin I guess. Have y’all ever thought of letting fans design part of the map like Worlds Adrift did with their sky islands?

Ameszilla

Not like physically altering terrain but placing assets and making it pretty

Kimi

The caves look awsome

Shadowolf

You guys are doing some awesome work! Love how things are developing

is this saying that mega map wont have a growth system?

I would imagine that "roleplay" would include everything up to and including the current PvP command system. That is, the megamap is primarily RP/PvE, but is available for PvP once a player inputs the PvP command; however, this command would only apply to themselves, and not allow them to force other players to PvP against their will. I don't PvP, but honestly, a megamap exclusively for it seems like a nightmare, since it would not only make finding an opponent more difficult, but also facilitate the formation of invincible megaclans like what already exist and are often complained about by current PvPers. Smaller maps help resolve both of these issues. Besides that, there are ongoing requests in the discord for a) dragons with preset stats for quick, one-time battles, as well as b) smaller maps that will force players on PvP servers to actually engage in PvP because they'll be easier to find. Given all this, using the megamap for PvP should be an option, not a mandate.

Love, love, LOVE the accommodation for drakes/walking dragons. I'm not a fan of drakes and love flying, but there's a lot you can miss by flying all the time—I'm all in for encouraging time on the ground. "The mega map continent will only be available in Roleplay servers. Survival servers will feature smaller maps and focus on PvP and survival." Now that you say this, yeah, a gargantuan map for PvP probably isn't a great idea—kind of defeats the purpose if clans can claim corners for nesting and almost never get raided just because of the distance needed to travel. So, then, are the smaller maps going to be completely unique, or just one or two biomes sectioned off from the megamap? The latter makes more sense for the time being; the former would provide a more varied experience for those who both RP and PvP, but require extra resources. Procedurally generated maps would be amazing, but I don't know how feasible that is—I'm sure it's not remotely for now.

will dragons be allowed a larger stamina pool to make up for the MORPG giant map? Also great work, keep it up!

Hotbread100

only available in roleplay servers? are you kidding me? so you mean only pve. the smaller map sucks and HONESTLY doesn't give enough room from the mega clans that are already dominating in the first place, they easily sweep the map and kill any and everyone as it is, so this also means people who play pvp for the survival aspect cant ever witness the map unless they find some ritzy pve server where its boring to just grow for 4 hours just to see the map then never touch it again. I've effectively lost interest in the mega map

Kinder Shadow

Servers should be able to choose what map they want to use for their servers. Not exactly fair to force them to use PvE server settings in order to use the megamap

Anne Beckett

This was discussed a little more in the Patreon discord channel, but there are two types of Roleplay: PVE and PVP. Each will use the big map and have stats. The Survival mode uses a smaller map, but is more for death matches. Not to worry!
