The melanistic skin can be nested, but you'd lose it if your dragon died; if you unlocked it (growing from egg to adult naturally, IIRC), that would make it selectable during character creation. Kickstarter backers have the melanistic skin unlocked by default.

They look kind of tacky, like they fell in a tar pit and you'd get it on you if you touched them. Can't deny the sheer blackness, though!

I think you unlock it by being nested into an iconic skin and growing it to adult

Overo will no longer exist and an official skin but will be able to recreated by players using the new skin crafting system.
