“If I only had an hour to chop down a tree, I would spend the first 45 minutes sharpening my axe.” – Abraham Lincoln.

1. Ears Over Eyes

Most tsugaru shamisen players prioritize learning shamisen through listening, and rarely use or rely on the Sheet Music or tabs. While this, of course, does not account for all situations, our first advice, is to try to learn by watching and listening to the shamisen, and only use the tabs for confirmation!! Learn to copy and feel the song, rather than read and memorize tabs!

2. Clarity Over Speed

Learn to play everything as slow as possible. If doesn't sound good slow, it won't sound good fast. Practice it slow over and over until you can do so without missing a note. It's not a race! If it takes you weeks, or even months to play it even 10% faster, that's ok!

3. Right Over Left

While focusing on hitting the correct notes and Tsubo is very important, it is nearly nothing when compared to the importance of producing a proper sound with the bachi. Think of it this way: 20% left hand (notes) 80% right hand (bachi).

Even professional players still focus on perfecting their bachi skill after 10 or even 20 years of playing. The ability to strike in the right way, at the right angle, hitting the right part of the string... consistently; This is a shamisen player's true challenge.
