In the 18th Century did they have aalternative forms of long distance communications besides mail or messangers? Like signal lights, smoke, mirrors, bells? Thanks, Hal Meng

Robert Kaehler

I've been part of an 18th-19th century camping group for almost 15 years now. At these camps we typically have contests involving tomahawk and knife throwing, flint and steel, black powder rifle, etc. Did people in the time period ever compete at these skills, or were they considered too mundane for that sort of thing?

Amy Abnet

I made the mushroom ketchup following your video, it turned out awesome. My question is, how long will it keep it in a sealed jar in the refrigerator? I tossed it after a few weeks. I still have and use the dried mushrooms. Thanks.

Thomas Young

My wife makes hand made soap and candles. It would be really neat to see how they did those things in the 18th century!

Brigit Zent

Did you three sleep in the cabin all night? Or was that just for the video? Speaking of--how about talking about beds and bedding on the frontier--I am sure in the "settled" areas they had regular beds--what did people use on the frontier in their cabins? Any plans to build a bed for the cabin?

David Kaff

Hi Jon! I’m interested in your background. Where did you go to school to learn all of your skills? What about your family?

Joyce Johnson

What are your thoughts on why Americans have different names for things then the UK does? Example windshield instead of windscreen and not pronouncing the h in herb. Love the channel and wish you all the best.

Matthew H

Hmmm, how about some strategies used to keep warm in the harsh winter months? Some of the art you have shown, depicted children in snow and ice barefoot. How did the poor folk fight winter conditions? Which foods were used to warm the body? What home modifications were used to stay warm such as bedding, finding wood in the snow, and keeping children and babies warm?

Becca

Any chance for getting the nutmeg tavern logo on a sweater or hoodie at some point???? I think it would look great on tan, navy, or dark green fabric.

Ben Lindelof

I like stagecoach technology of the era. It's fun to see videos about them, plus the horse aspect alone is fun to look at! On top of that you have long journeys and the preparation for travel.

Lori Proudman-Knoebel

Wondering if you’ve ever visited Sturbridge Village in Massachusetts or Old Stone Fort in Schoharie, NY?

Quicksilver

When did homing pigeons begin to be kept and used for messages?

Lori...I worked in the gift shop at Old Sturbridge Village until the covid shutdown ended my employment there. Sadly, OSV has changed their narrative and has re-written history to become "politically correct" and has become a very left-wing liberal historical venue, and as a conservative Christian, I can't support that. I grew up in upstate NY ...Rochester area...and Genesee Country Village, in Mumford, NY, is a much nicer venue, with much more to offer :)

Ashley Fritz

I'm assuming it as frowned upon but were women allowed in 18th Century coffee houses ?

Are Homing Pigeons a different breed than the common variety statue decorator, or is it a matter of taming and training?

Sue O'Connor

Would Raised Beds be used for the kitchen garden, or was it most likely they'd have just planted directly in the ground?

Mike Kruk

Recipes from the 18th century always seem to involve such enormous quantities. Pounds of butter, dozens of eggs, pounds of sugar and flour. Did people just make more because cooking was such a chore to do (fire prep etc) or did they eat a lot more?

John & Sarah Talley

How would people camp cook in windy conditions? Would they did a hole? Would that help shield the wind? Are there ways to make fires hotter?

Sue O'Connor

I think they just had more people to feed then... An average family had more than 2.5 children, and i doubt they wrote down (or looked up) receipts for "every day meals" they'd have looked them up for Special Occasions.

Caden Forbes

Hey Jon where can I get a nutmeg grater like yours?

Philip Esteban

Do you have a copy of Revolutionary America 1763 to 1800?

Caden Forbes

I just received my set of three teas, I tried the black bohea tea and it is amazing. Enjoying it while watching this live stream. Love The channel!

Lori Proudman-Knoebel

Thank you for prompting us to put nutmeg in our coffee; delicious!

Philip Clum

Thanks, these Patreon meetings are great!

Heather Torrey

Fantastic, thank you! You spoke about a book that's massive and worth reading or listening to. Can you say again what that was? (I had a call during that time, eeps!)

Heather Torrey

I think it's the same as they sell in the online shop. The one they sell is very nice.

They've been domesticated for at least 3,000 years. But you need a pigeon handler on both ends of the flight.

Lori Proudman-Knoebel

Heather, I loved Sturbridge as a child and visited there on my honeymoon as well. I live so close to the Old Stone Fort I could hit it by throwing a rock! Right now, unfortunately, it is closed due to COVID19. Our Board of Supervisors in Schoharie County had talked about limiting the funding to it as well. I hope they realize what a detriment that would be to the tourism here.

Ron Farve

I have:t seen a video of yours that I didn’t enjoy yet. Keep using your imagination and don’t worry quite as much about what others will think about it. Keep up the fantastic work. Thank you. I love your videos

History is written by the winners; as suppressed information is uncovered, sometimes the interpretations should be updated.

I've been studying my family tree for years, but didnt find out until I moved to NY that some were original Palatine settlers in the Schoharie Valley! It's so strange to try and picture how it must have looked then, with nothing but trees. I hope they don't cut support. :/

David Kaff

Thanks Jon, for answering my question on the stream! I appreciate it!
