Dominika Sasanka

Sounds good. It'll be an afternoon treat for me in Ireland. Nice.

Mossy Log

Oh no! I'll be driving then and have to miss it live. I'll catch the replay.

Pat Emery

A weekend treat - Thank you Jon!

Richard DeLotto

SOUND judgement on platform independency, sir!

James Neeley

Count me in on your own streaming platform. Great News.

Heather Torrey

Jon, I'm listening but don't have a chat option, or even comments. No idea what's up for me. I am so excited to hear about the new endeavor! I will absolutely watch. It will be great to see where this all goes. Thanks for bringing history to life ❤

Ed Hanley

Jon, Thank you for this morning’s livestream. Standing up your own in-house streaming capability is an excellent idea. I don’t have the chat thing figured out so I was not able to comment to that effect while the livestream was in progress. But congratulations are obviously in order so – congratulations!

townsend

OK - I think I have it.....

Tom Usher

It won't accept nutmeg as the code. I'll try back later.

Tom Usher

If I'm repeating this, I'm sorry. Think I left before I posted it. Stupid old man issue. Anyway, nutmeg is not working as the coupon code. Thanks for all you're doing. Looking forward to seeing y'all on Roku.

Tom Usher

And now I see my original comment....more stupid old man!

townsend

OK - I turned on the comments part of the videos and I think they should all "play" now.

Caden Forbes

Could you post the link to the townsends plus site please

Sue O'Connor

Yippee! Plays on Edge. Testing other browsers now.

Sue O'Connor
>>55991157

Works on Chrome as well. Kind of a pain chasing the link through the chat replay though...

Timothy Kuehn

Darn, missed the live stream! Jon, I'm behind you in this venture as I can be. :>)

Tom Usher
>>55990041

I tried every variation I could think of. I'll go back and try again.

Patty Fagan-Miller

Hooray! You fixed it! The videos play using any browser!

Tom Usher
>>55990041

It says there is an error redeeming the code. The internet is broken again! :)

Caden Forbes

I went through the chat and I found the link. Love the channel

Tom Usher
>>55990041

I'm assuming that I should using the "get access now" button on the home page. Like I said, stupid old man. I'm guessing that the problem lies on my end. I am using my phone and the Brave browser. I'll give Chrome a try.

Tom Usher
>>55990041

Doesn't work on Chrome, either. Unfortunately, our power is down so I can't try a real computer.

Timothy Kuehn

Signed up with discount for year. Both on PC and mobile. Looks great! Townsends always put out great material. Started with Townsends by purchasing materials back in the 70's. Hoorah!

Sonjia Leyva

Sorry I missed the live - 7 am on a Saturday (PDT) is a wee bit early for us West Coast folks. 😴

Timothy Kuehn

Still having play issues on Townsendsplus.

Tom Usher
>>55990041

I'm using a VPN. Wonder if that is having an impact. Power came back on so I'm on the laptop. Still can't access the site. Guess I'll have to join to see how it looks. Clever of you, Mr. Townsend.

Sonjia Leyva

You mentioned content for children. What might be helpful would be to lookup the National Education Standards and provide a list of what videos might work with that particular standard. Another would be to invite teachers to create lesson plans that incorporate your contents. I'd avoid state standards right now - while similar, they're a LOT of variations between states.

Tom Usher
>>55990041

Paypal link doesn't seem to work, either. I'm doing everything I can to break as much as possible.

Annie

Yay! TownsendsPlus is a great idea. All signed up! I did notice something small in the profile section: it looks like you should be able to set or select an avatar, but there isn't a button to do so.

townsend
>>55995671

Thanks for the update. I think, I might have it fixed now. Give it another try.

Lui Trui

Works great for me! Looks good.

Quicksilver

Signed up, nutmeg got $10 off the yearly fee, and it is a pretty page!

Quicksilver

DuckDuckGo browser seems to work very well with the site.

Lynne Olson

I would love a Townsends Roku channel! I really like the idea of more woodworking and pottery videos on Plus. Signed up tonight - everything has been working without any issues.

Ed Hanley

Jon, A few quick comments: Adding menu headings for “About” and “Community” might be helpful. “About” would give you the opportunity to explain the purpose of the site to new & perspective subscribers -something you might want to have in place when the proverbial doors open. Even an edited version of yesterday’s Patreon livestream might serve well initially. Also, giving your community of subscribers the opportunity to ask questions and leave comments – as we can thru Patreon – could prove useful. The initial feedback you might receive could actually help guide your efforts to develop the site. The menu heading “Catalog” seems an unusual choice. The word suggests (to me at least) either a print or online catalog of merchandise. Perhaps “Library” or simply “Videos” (as on the You Tube channel would work better or at least just as well. Will you be bringing other content under this new roof also? From the Nutmeg Archive, the blog, and “Sifting the Past” for example. Just wondering.

Ed, Thank you for the thoughtful suggestions. I have already sent them to the rest of the team working on the site.

Ed Hanley
>>56037590

Good morning Jon. You are most welcome. Thanks for the opportunity to be part of this!

Dominika Sasanka

Hello All. I have watched pottery vid today and I can't see how long the vid is going to be on it. It just shows me how long I've been watching. Is this just my browser I wonder?

Dominika Sasanka
>>56048058

I can see the length of vids before I choose which one to use. It's just not there when I'm watching it. It's probably been like that forever I'm just silly. 😂

BvD

Ed had some useful comments above, but to continue, "Dashboard" is similarly inscrutable as a category. I'd suggest "Account" or "Profile," or something similar. The "x" to close the section instead of other navigation is not optimal for navigation and can get users stuck. Also, when you click on the top-right "Cooking Videos" link, only season 16 comes up, with no easy way to get to the other seasons, but that may just be a beta situation. The responsive design is okay, but it does not not dynamically crop or resize your background images. With the secondary carousel navigation, you should probably have rollover or static descriptive text for what the categories are. For the video comments, you might consider giving users the ability to edit or delete their own posts. Minor layout bug: When not signed in, the down arrow next to catalog is showing up underneath and not next to "Catalog." Haven't had a ton of time to kick the tires, but some initial feedback. Looking forward to the new material. EDIT: Caught another one on the way out: the Filters->Category drop down is not wide enough to display all the text of the categories in the drop down.

Ed Hanley

Since the subject of producing content for children came up, I’d like to suggest that simply producing more content that INCLUDES children might be a good place to start. I’ve only viewed a small percentage of the content available on the channel. However, most of that involved adults talking to or working with other adults to depict/demonstrate/discuss activities adults would have engaged in back in the 18th century. Children are by no means entirely absent (they’re in the recent brick making & firing videos for example) but their inclusion doesn’t seem particularly common. It’s my understanding that large families were far more common in the 18th century than they are now. Further, children apparently played a much larger role in contributing to the survival & success of their families. Including them a bit more often in the content (even if it’s only in the background) in situations where children would normally have been present could add yet another small “period correct” detail to our understanding of 18th century life. During his recent visit to the Nutmeg Tavern Mr. Michael Dragoo stated that “I try to do things that are infectious.” That struck me as a splendid approach to making history both interesting and relevant on a personal level. Helping young viewers realize that they too had 18th century counterparts might prove infectious as well.

>>55995071

Yeah, I totally missed this, too. Especially since I forgot the time difference. zzzzzz

Heather Torrey

I got an email reminding about the trial period ending, which is VERY nice! Most subscriptions want you to forget, but not Townsendsplus!

djgonzales

How about adding a Tier here on Patreon of say $20 that gives us an account on TPlus, so we have access here and there? I also forgot to put in the code.... Oops.

Heather Torrey

I am testing on my phone's browser (Android). I can heart, comment, and get the share buttons to work. When watching a video, if I expand it while in portrait orientation, then turn the phone to landscape, the image disappears; I can still hear and get controls to pause etc, but no video until I turn it back to portrait. However, if I turn the phone to landscape, THEN expand the video it works just fine and I can rotate back and forth to my heart's content.

djgonzales

Oh, and yes, the video of do you always dress like that & zombies are the best of the "comedic" ones. I really enjoy all that back catalog.... So, in my suggested tier, maybe we could get a copy of the movie? Asking for a friend.

djgonzales

Education with TPlus: Crash Course, from the fathers of YT, Vlogbrothers, got together a school package (raised funds) for classrooms to go along with their various series of Crash Course. I would recommend contacting them to discuss their template for electronic education. info@crashcourse.tv

SQ_Minion

Chromecast support would be ideal for me. My wife and I watch all the YouTube videos by casting them to our smart TV, and there's no way to do that with the TPlus website short of hooking my laptop up to the TV with an HDMI cable.

Brian Garland

Just caught up with the news. I think this is great. Maybe some additional collaborations with historical sites or reenactment groups would be good video topics. Google TV app would be great.

>>56048058

My browsers shows the time stamp of the current position and the entire length

Jack DelGado

Really excited for you guys! So happy to hear you are taking the reigns and creating your own platform. I know it's a TON of work and cost, but I have been so discouraged with YouTube and other social media companies lately. I believe you're doing the right thing. Count me in as a guinea pig in any way you'd need or like. Love you guys, your content, the whole package. I definitely would like to continue to support you in any way i can.

Jack DelGado

Sorry guys if I missed it, but how can I view and test the new platform now? I'm only about halfway through watching the video now. Maybe it'll be mentioned at the end. If not, would love to know! Thanks.

Jack DelGado

I'm in and signed up. Heard you mention it a bit after I typed that. Love this idea and direction. Are you open to any feedback or thoughts on the site? I know you guys are all great at what you do, and this is really nice, but I am a Creative Director/Graphic Designer by 30+ years trade, and do a lot of web design and marketing. May have some insights that could help. But I promise to keep it light and not be a pain. Just let me know. Thanks Jon! Keep up the great stuff.

townsend
>>56278036

Sure, we would love to hear your input. Understand, we don't have control of all the look and feel of the site and we are not done yet. Thanks!

Jack DelGado

Totally understand. And I know it is still in progress. Looks great so far. Definitely don't want to be a pain, just want to help it be the best it can if I can in any way. All the best with this.

Yasmine Sacristan

Hi Jon just watched the video sounds exciting. I’ll be a guinea pig

Nick Werren

😍 amazing news, I recently created my own website to put my content (articles and the like) on and I have to say that it's far more freeing: you feel like you're in control of what you're creating, you're not afraid of an algorithm curating it, plus there's no external junk - it's a terminus that people reach to engage with what you're making and that's it. I think you're ahead of the curve here, it's a risk but I'll continue to support you and continue to enjoy what you make.

People forget that until Web 2.0 and the near monopolization of platforming by the social media giants that people making and hosting their own content was the norm, not the next big thing. Starting with Blogger and MySpace, it became easier for people to participate with Internet content, but at the near complete loss of content control. Good to see it swinging in the other direction again.

Sarah O'Toole

Very exciting update! I think this is a great idea. One click from YT can end the channel -- can't put ask the eggs in one basket.
