Hello darlings,

First off, please find enclosed the first 35 minutes of the Adobe video. A lot more is done than that, the video is shaping up to be much, much longer (the script is telling me it’s 46,000 words, which feels wrong but there we go) but, minor spoilers, a lot of the back four fifths or so of the video are being shot on an actual location (which we’re driving out to in like 12 hours! wow!) and this is about as much of the video that makes any sense without any of those shots in there. After the shoot, the rest of the video should be ready to go pretty fast we hope.

There’s an animated segment in the opening which is still being worked on by Allie and Joe, but what they have so far is so cool so I wanted to show it off in this draft. I’m still messing around with the whole thing of course, there’s a ton of stuff to redo once I have the rest of the video finalized, so please treat this as a rough draft and let me know what you think!

Ok go watch the video now and come back and read the rest of this post with the apology for how long it’s been and other stuff!! GO NOW!!!

Welcome back!

We’re putting a lot of effort into the live-action video segments for this one. As you might have seen, in addition to helping with research and giving copious notes on the script and the edit, Kat has somehow also spent much of the last few months making puppets:

"Michael! Michael! Don't leave me here!"

If you can somehow guess which real life person the second puppet is of, you get twenty points. Kat showed a picture of the completed puppet to Adam Savage and he correctly guessed who it was, which was astounding.

You know, when I made the videos all by myself I was never sure they were good until they were done and other people said they were ok. I can look back and think ‘this was good,’ but in the moment it was just me doing what I thought worked, and second guessing myself the whole time. Now I can see physical work someone else is putting into the video, and now I’m getting feedback on my own work in real time from another person, I can see it for what it is. I think this is the first time I’ve thought ‘this video is going to be good!’ before it was actually finished and released. It’s a nice feeling! I’m so excited that I’ll probably forget to sleep before we have to film it tomorrow, lol.

Anyway, now for the fun part of the patron post, the excuses.

I kept meaning to write this post sooner, but then thinking 'I should get a piece of the video finished first so it's not just a text update' and then getting distracted by editing, or just going back to working on the video and forgetting people might be wondering if I’m still alive. And then it would have been longer since my last post, so I wanted to make sure I had more to show, and that spiral continued for a while. Silly. Expect more frequent updates from now on, even if I have less to show. You’re keeping me alive by supporting me, you should expect to know what I’m doing at all times.

The other main delay has been the visa process.

Since a lot of this video is being filmed in the USA, I needed a work visa to legally do it without getting arrested or deported or barred from the country forever. The process of getting one is exactly as complicated and time-consuming as people say it is. Also, given the current situation in America, this seriously messed with my life for a while. I was advised by a lawyer to be extremely careful what I said on social media about the country (and some of its allies) for a while (and sent a list of old tweets to consider deleting) so I had a chance of being approved. I also called in a lot of favors with internet celebrities to get them to write letters of recommendation for me. So if I appear on Adam Conover’s podcast any time soon, please understand I owe him big time.

It’s been annoying not being allowed to tweet ‘Death 2 Amerikkka’ and 'stop killing people' for a while but it’s also helped me focus on the work more. I certainly didn't miss posting on the rotting husk of twitter for a few months, at least. Plus, now the visa is approved, a lot of other videos I want to do in future will benefit from being permitted to do actual work here! But this does mean this project got delayed a lot more than I'd like. Sorry about that.

The other minor source of delay was the car accidents (Kat’s note: “THEY WEREN’T MY FAULT”). Let me explain in more detail so you feel sympathy for us:

Doing prep work for the video, getting props and equipment and stuff, Kat and I got rear-ended by a driver who was distracted by some kids on bikes. The damage wasn’t super bad (dealing with whiplash, car got scuffed up) but we decided to delay the big shoot until after we got it fixed and recovered a bit.

Anyway about a week later, before we had got the previous damage fixed, a car smashed into the side of Kat’s car on the freeway. We weren’t seriously injured, but the passenger-side door was completely crushed in. It can’t physically open any more, I had to climb out through the driver’s side to leave the car.

The other car then drove away very very fast. I managed to get a picture of the license plate before it disappeared at least, so Kat can do whatever Americans are supposed to do when this sort of thing happens. There’s a billboard ad for an injury lawyer every twelve feet so I’m sure there’s a healthy system figured out for all this.

Once we got back Kat’s car was leaking mysterious fluids from somewhere. Cumulatively the poor thing was a little more damaged than we were comfortable driving for hours to get to the location, so part of planning the shoot became renting a series of cars to finish getting stuff together, and later to actually get to the shoot. If this wasn’t already the most expensive and logistically annoying video I’ve ever done, it certainly is now. Kat is also looking for car recommendations.

Since I was stuck in America and I’d been invited, and we had needed to delay the shoot anyway, I did a panel at Open Sauce in San Francisco last month (this is also how Kat ran into Adam Savage and started showing off the puppet pictures). I’ve been advised not to get on a plane unless it’s to leave the country, so we rode with some friends who happened to be driving there. Those of you who attended Open Sauce have probably heard most of this story already from me, it’s certainly a fun story to tell.

It was nice meeting those of you who went! Hanging out with other people, and creators who do similar stuff, instead of sitting in the woods talking to myself, is pretty cool! I can see why people live near other people now. Since I’m stuck in the US for a bit, I might plan a meetup at some point in California if anybody’s interested!

Basically, this video has taken a long time for a wide variety of extremely trivial reasons, mostly me being slow and doing far more research and rewriting than I had planned to do (Remember the proposed title Adobe Must Die: The Rise of Open Source? The entire open source part is now a separate video), but for once I have reasons outside of my own incompetence. Thank you for being, well, the best audience ever. You’re better than I deserve. If you were meaner maybe I’d’ve had to work harder.

I’ll let you know how the shoot went asap! I want to taunt you with more cryptic puppet pictures before the video is done.

Sincerely,

Harry

WELCOME BACK

Emily Riddell

I've been using illustrator every day for work for 6 years, 🤞🏼 you can talk me out of it!

Sabi Sgambi

I was literally watching your Plagiarism video again today and thinking, “I wonder if Hbomb will post on Patreon soon, he’s been quiet since the Oreopocalypse.” Thanks for the updates and the video! You and the team are doing amazing, especially given how much love it sounds like you’re putting into this one. Stay safe and stay hydrated!

Birdie

Yesssss!!!! Welcome back!!!

Reese

Kat, look at getting a Honda, I've been so happy with ours. Sorry your old car got shanked ☹️

nyxomniax

Wonderful to hear you and Kat are okay after those two accidents, and I hope she's doing whatever she needs to do in America to be covered for the damages! As an Australian, I salute your bravery for willingly adventuring into Amerikka. Excited to watch the preview video!

Wolfman Jack

What kind of car does Kat need? Price range? Special requirements?

galileeo

bet money the open source video is a second channel add on

galileeo

hey so i cant get the video to load, youtube is claiming im a bot since im not watching directly on their site, is there a link I can have for it?

CJ Leemaster

My boyfriend thinks the puppet is Charles Bronson, the prisoner, not the actor. I said I didn’t think he’d dress like that, and moments later he pointed to a photo of Bronson in suspenders.

jaytaiko

Harry, thank you so much for the update. Your work genuinely inspired me to make my own video essay. Seeing how much work goes into it firsthand -- well, I definitely have a newfound respect for the craft! Can't wait to see how the final version turns out :)

Peter Barnes

My first thought is the puppet is of the mythbusters presenter but then there wouldnt be astounded feelings, because that’s someone he knows so my second thought is that it’s CyberSmith

Wolfman Jack

Very delighted you and Kat are not dead 😀 👍

wanderingriver

yay he's alive! happy to hear it, sending best wishes to you and kat. as an american, PLEASE be fucking careful, and you should probably get out as soon as you can lmao (although i might be projecting a bit like girl WHY would you want to be here). i would definitely appreciate more frequent updates over bigger ones more infrequently, if only just as assurance that the projects are still in the process of being made! anyway hope you and kat feel better soon and the damage & costs are as painless as possible. tell kat i've had a used 2012 subaru outback for 3 years and have driven nearly 100,000 miles and it's holding up great so far. they're safe cars too I think!

CJ Leemaster

I also went through this thought process about Jamie Hyneman haha.

Nicholas Huff

Definitely think Charles Bronson. I was going to guess him before I saw your post.

sad boi sundays

had a guy hit my wife's car who sped off, but we filmed the whole aftermath - instead of having his insurance pay for the damages, he instead chose to not renew his license, insurance or car rego, changed his address and phone number and our insurance just gave up chasing it. apparently you can just do that?

Leif_millelnuie

So if i understand correctly adobe has hired the services of mad drivers to sabotage your shooting of this video. You are a hero! (Jk? I can't wait to see you burn and destroy a conglomerate

Aciid Art

Glad to hear about the update and that you and Kat are okay/not injured after the accidents! Can be pretty stressful/scary dealing with that on top of everything else so good to hear things are otherwise mostly going alright! And a California meetup sounds super fun!!!

This post also answers Klavernacle’s incessant demands. Not that it’s any of his business.

Péter Stangl

Hell yeah, an update! 🎉 Sorry if i came off impatient in the comments under some of the previous posts lately, i hope it didn't add too much to your anxiety 😅 You guys are doing great work, it's always nice to be reminded that more stuff is on its way. ❤️

SamCyberCat

I'm sorry, I did read ahead before watching the video, but I promise I'll read it again later after watching it with fresh eyes. Glad you're both okay after the car crashes, holy smokes! Also, I saw this update go up and worried that you were online at 6:30am (so am I, but I'm a shift worker lol) only to see that you're in America and it must be a more sensible time of day there.

AJ Fite (NCLF.net)

The YouTube app on my TV got stuck buffering AND CRASHED the second after you said "surprised it didn't crash" and it got me so good

King of all Cosmos

I am getting my flash player ready now. Just have to update Macromedia and get a working SWF codec then it's smooth sailing into a 56k download of this 160p video... ...as long as nobody uses the phone for the next 7 hours.

Moony

Hi Harry! Glad you're alive!

korbin Allseitz

Its crazy how many animations and visuals this video has. Looking really good guys! :)

I work for the art education channel Proko and am glad to say we swore off all sponsorships years ago. No sponsors, no partnerships, no product reviews or anything even close. God help anyone who sends us art supplies. We'll take em but they're not getting promoted and chances are we'll never end up using them in videos even accidentally. Just free art lessons on YouTube in handy, structured playlists. Or you can buy a course if you really want to. But the free YouTube playlists are solid free versions of the courses they come from.

BrawlKaiser

Yeah, 2025 has been an awful year for America. Sorry that our problems are causing problems for you as well.

Spaceman

Wow. I literally looked up this patreon thinking “hey. When is next next video? Has he posted about it?” And like one hour later this post appears. Super excited for it!

Anathema

Oh my god Kat's puppet making skills?? Get to the Henson studio

Spaceman

Heh. I watched that exact video yesterday morning.

Aidan Connolly

Can't believe you'll be filming at the adobe where they make Adobe

Blinckie

Can't wait for the full thing!

Seth A. Robinson

Good stuff! As a Flash gamedev from back in the day, I think saying "Adobe killed Flash" is only half the story. Apple struck the decisive blow in 2010 when they banned Flash from iOS and pushed HTML5 instead. Seven years later, Adobe officially mercy killed it, but Flash was already on life support after being abandoned by most of us because we needed our stuff to run on mobile too.

asmidgeofpidge

A good day to see Harry return. I'm gonna eat good tonight.

Nataly

In America we grow up having favorite lawyer billboards and radio jingles. A California meet up would be super fun!

George

Glad to hear you're okay after what must have been a stressful few months. I'm so happy you posted, but even happier that you've been able to put the time into this and do it the way you wanted. It's obvious that you're passionate about this topic and the video already looks great. Only note from me is don't worry about run time. I'd happily sit and listen to you talk for hours. Make the video you want to make 💙

Spaceman

I’m guessing the second puppet is Friedrich Nietzsche

Charlie Archie

thanks for the update, excited for the full video. also my guess in the puppet, though i dont think he's bald it reminds me of coffeezilla

CJ Leemaster

Oh no, I hadn’t considered that the finished puppet might not be bald.

I was thinking about you, Harry, yesterday. Wondering what you were up to, and now I know. Can't wait for the rest of the video

Thanks for confirming it really is as insane trying to get in/out of the US right now as we've been hearing. Sorry about the car!

Tip: How do you think a university picks which tools to teach their students with? When the students get a job they will only be good at the niche tool requiring a 7000$ yearly license. Even for physical equipment that as you show can be pretty expensive. It is not uncommon for universities to get a 50% discount for things used in classrooms. A company representative then get one lecture in the semester where they can show the company’s other products, plus they block out the competition by having the next generation trained only in their products. Look at how desperately Microsoft and Google try to get integrated into schools, high schools and universities. Deep discounts for the students to lock them in and sky high enterprise license fees for companies who then hire those graduates. You thought tutorials was an issue? Look at how “public education” does the exact same thing.

Kat

Hahah yes we will go on about this at length (although more evidence of direct deals is always helpful if you have any 👀)

boston hall

Always good to hear from you. The quality of work you produce is unparalleled, best of luck in Amerikkka

Siegfried Pinzer

what good timing for a video about this topic to be released, regarding the current situation of a even higher corporations trying to control and denying creative expression.

Kat

Steve Jobs’ personal vendetta against flash is my favorite beef

It’s looking great so far, Harry! As someone whose computer has been periodically blue-screened by Creative Cloud always-on bloatware since late May, in a bug Adobe is very aware of multiple users suffering from but seems to have no intention of fixing, I’m very invested in this. Can’t wait to see the on-location shots, but please do stay safe! Our roads are sometimes pretty awful places to be. If anyone’s interested in seeing the insanity involved in trying to stop the creative software you pay lots of money for from literally damaging your OS during scheduled updates (and wasting a whole week of music production for you as you reinstall everything), the bug discussion is here — I’m “Ethan”: https://community.adobe.com/t5/creative-cloud-desktop-discussions/dpc-watchdog-violation-caused-by-creative-cloud/td-p/15388005

That’s so coooool!!!

If you are using a VPN, changing to another exit location likely will fix it. I have had this happen too. Google really wants to serve us ads and unlike Nebula, the videos on Patreon are not hosted on the platform. If only Patreon could point to a Nebula video, this wouldn’t be an issue.

Kudzu Nation

"American pounds" made me laugh unreasonably hard

Kat

We’re debating between this or just another main channel Video!

Sandy

This is going to sound dumb and maybe it is but I legit teared up a little watching this draft and reading this update post. Seeing how passionate you and your team are (you guys are making puppets!!), despite how bleak and hostile to artists the world is these days. I have so so much respect for any one who takes the time and is passionate enough to create anything, themselves, for the love of the craft, even if it's not "good" or popular, especially if it's not "good" or popular. (I'm not saying the video isn't good, it is!!) I don't remember who said it but it's never been more apparent to me these days that artists are the people who make the world livable. Thank you so so much and take all the time you need (and fuck Adobe)

Isaac Madsen

California meetup would be exciting! Adobe even though it wasn't founded here technically is, I find, a source of pride at the University of Utah because of John Warnock. You'd think that would mean Adobe would be nice to the University, but last year in a cost cutting measure they reduced the benefits students got for tuition and made it so that you had to request and justify getting access to each Adobe software that wasn't some AI shit. I miss when those perks came with student costs, but it's motivation to try and get out of the Adobe ecosystem.

galileeo

hell yeah! thanks kat

Inkscape is my favourite alternative. My main issue: So much vector art is saved in .ai and there is only one tool to open them: Adobe Illustrator. Exporting in .svg is the way to go. Then multiple other tools become available.

Am1vf

Hell yeah, Hbomberguy is going to rant about one of my main ranting points! Thanks for the extra ammo and validation. XD

Kate Alice

Good start to a morning today! Such a good video already can't wait for the full thing

Anita Karsa

No! You don't have to travel to the dangerous Wild West to talk to people! There are plenty of creators in the UK/EU you can mingle with.

Jesse

Fucking Kevin again!

John Skelton

Awesome video! Can’t wait to see the rest. One nit to pick though…FrameMaker and Acrobat weren’t marketed as competitors. Acrobat was/is the tool you use to make electronic versions of your documents that you created in other software, like FrameMaker. Putting FrameMaker against PageMaker, and later InDesign definitely is appropriate, though most new FrameMaker users were actually coming from MS Word. Sincerely, Your Pedantic FrameMaker Trainer/Salesman from the late 90s.

Mike Blackney

This is really great already, so good luck with the finish! I’m also glad that you’re both okay after the two (2) collisions. I used to work as a teacher in a private college for game development and one aspect of adobe I hated (outside what you’ve explored here, which rules) is the predatory pricing for educators and students. Because the software is “industry standard”, and because the colleges are mostly run by ex-industry vets, there’s a backwards-looking approach to what software will be installed and taught. “Everyone used maya in my old job three years ago so let’s get maya because it’s industry standard and not Blender because then the students aren’t getting the proper education they’re paying so much for.” was the attitude. it only costs $30 a month for students (which 90% of them can’t afford, but the people running the school are out of touch so won’t realize this) and education institutions get discounts on the software while teachers get free versions- absolutely something that influences them in choosing to teach it and recommend it to their upper management as it lets them continue making side projects on their meagre teaching wage. These alone wouldn’t be major problems if you could simply buy the software when you graduate but you can only rent it (at an outrageous fee once you’re no longer a student) and the prices to rent it skyrocket for non-student subscriptions.

Chrysanthanos

Jesus Christ, I’m learning so much about Adobe, like how glad I am that I’ve never used the software under their name!!! Really excited for this video

Spaceman

lol I feel the same. I saw this and went “ohhh yah. I have argued about this forever. I can’t wait to nod furiously for like six hours. “

Desi Fowl

So glad you and Kat are safe!

There is nothing on paper. The buying process (call for tenders) are open for any vendor to submit offers to. But when universities do them the offers are surprisingly 50% lower than market prices, when they are used in teaching. That the vendor get one lecture per semester to show other products is framed as an opportunity for the students to see the other, often more expensive tools, that is used in the real world. But it is very clear to any vendor bidding that the students will only hear about the products from the vendor who wins. With specialty equipment costing 65.000$ universities are happy to get a 50% discount as it means less cost or more equipment to the classroom for the same amount of money. But university staff isn’t blind to the fact of vendor lock-in. Sadly I do not have any publicly available documentation of this for specialty equipment. But Microsoft and Google have very public discount programs for university students. Good to hear you have already found that branch of capitalist indoctrination on your own. Sadly I can’t provide any solid documentation, as those tenders are not public. But ask any university staff that you expect to give an honest answer and you will hear the same. Universities also have their Raid Shadow Legends, they just go by other names.

Chris Nicholas

I don’t want to your woes but what about that doughnut from the new grounds video 😂❤️

So glad you guys are safe. Thank you for making incredible art, I'm grateful to exist at the same time as you. 💚 PLEASE DO A CALIFORNIA MEET AND GREET I WOULD CRY

Right before I need to sleep, truly rude. Also good god I look forward to your catharsis rip amerikka posts later. Anyway I'm off to sleep...!

Spaceman

Knowing my luck, this will be like 40 min on Adobe and then make the hard pivot and be five additional hours on some massive bomb drop where we find out that Harry has stumbled on some giant Stonecutters style cult led by Adobe and 7-11 with the deliberate intent of destroying all creative expression on the planet because they believe it will signal the coming in the elder gods. Or it’s five hours on how corrupt some content creators are. One or the other.

Herr Frodo Brömmelkamp

My first thought about the puppet is Horst Lichter but there is NO WAY anyone outside of Germany even knows who that is, lol

Devon

My wife runs into this problem. She wants to work in the digital art field, and a lot of jobs specify they want experience in software that we can't afford. She has incredible skills and experience with free software (mainly Blender), and could easily do what the jobs require, but because they're presumably now locked into a particular software, she's struggling to find someone who will take her on.

Peppersnap

Aw hell yeah I'm into this shit. Looking forward to watching the full 7.5 hour video when it comes out later this decade.

C W

Congratulations on your continued survival despite America. I think Harry is the puppet. This topic has been such a pain point for me over the years. On top of the dismal corpo ghoulishness of it all on its own, there's also the exploitable voids it creates, where lesser ghouls move in to perform faux opposition for money. Stuff like pink liar Stuart Semple's endless fundraiser for his imaginary Adobe competitor. Looking forward to it, please stay safe @ you and all your staff.

cawcaw

Happy to see you post 💖 Also the puppets are crazy good.

VenusianOne

sorry about all the accidents and the america of it all, see y’all in february or whatever!

cawcaw

Also I'm sure you'll talk about it later but Adobe is one of the main reasons I chose not to apply for any jobs in publishing post-graduation. I had to find a good or at least mid paying job fast and I knew I would not be able to pay for the Adobe subscription while starting out. The publishing industry just doesn't support other programs, even if you're using the old versions of say InDesign, you're kind of fucking over the people who will have to convert it to the current version used in house. We mainly got taught using the Adobe subscription and if you don't have the money and time to figure out other software, you're cursed to use the subscription. It was mentioned before that students get a better deal but when you're trying to live on a budget, shelling out for that shit is gruelling. My uni didn't have an understanding with the company so most of us paid and had to keep paying if we wanted to make any money in publishing (design wise). I came there to learn and I got hooked on software that I cannot own. Cannot tell you how frustrating that experience was. I ended up working corporate, which I hate and I'm slowly working towards going back into creative work now that my life is more stable. This comment is long but to tl;dr it: I am happy you're making this video. Ending this monopoly stars with more people being aware of just how shitty it is. Much love 💕

Adam Gaffney

My guess for the puppet has to be Theodore Roosevelt, if it's not it's got mega Roosevelt energy.

AquariaMoon

Great start. As an artist I hate adobe, but the underlying insidiousness obviously goes way deeper and farther and is even more interesting, I love how a specific example can illustrate much better than abstract thoughts. Looking forwards to the full video! Glad you guys got out of the accident okay and survived the US. Mostly.

Lexi

Good stuff! Can't wait for the remaining 3hr25 of video to be released ❤️

Rune Saint

Can I just say that I really like the like "Patron exclusive illness".

Elderoy

Awesome ! Glad that you are both ok after this accident... On the topic of the video, Im so glad to see the whole insidious tutorial scheme as I never thought about it Can't wait to see the rest of the video !

Elderoy

I hate when private schools you pay 8000€/y doesn't provide basic tools to actually work (fortunatly some of them does, or good teachers YAAAAR'd them)

George Greves

As a creative the whole thing just continues to get more depressing...pirating is harder than before and even alternative software struggles to make an impact. The pivot-to-video was already annoying when trying to find a quick answer to a design question where you had to scrub through 10mins of footage to find the bit where they tell you where the button is hidden, but now with all the extra sludge of ads and ai it's absolutely brutal. I still have a floppy disc with Macromedia Flash on it from when I did a summer class back in the late 90s. Now I look at it and am filled with nostalgia for the kinda janky, cheesy world we've lost. Anyway I'm looking forward to the rest of the video!

moon jellyfish

that’s a really interesting and crazy and terrifying behind-the-scenes peek!! my car recommendation is a mid-to-late 2010s honda civic. crazy good fuel economy while also being fast and light. nice brakes, too.

moon jellyfish

also, i’m not sure who the puppet is, but i wanna say dan olson for reasons i can’t quite articulate. on that note, this feels like a mean comparison for reasons i also can’t articulate

OpenPixelAdventure

Man am I glad to have patreon now. I got it just for your videos ❤️. Good luck with the rest of the video! Hope you guys get out of the US safe and sound.

moon jellyfish

that one illustration of the grim reaper floating door-to-door, but the doors are labeled “tommy tallarico,” “youtube plagiarism,” and “adobe the company”

Zig Justice

Holy crap, I had no idea you were in the Fascist States of America! I am too, right now, visiting my elderly mother. Try to enjoy some food while you're here. I've heard the only thing you can get across the pond that's actually enjoyable to eat is curry. Glad you're okay after the accidents, especially a freaking hit-and-run. Stay careful, stay safe.

Mort

35 minutes of catharsis for those of us trapped in the hellscape that is professional reliance on adobe. Every time I have to use pantones in my beloved/behated illustrator (every fucking day) all I can think is look how they massacred my boy…. Excited for the whole video! RIP essential graphics, always in our hearts

Catherine Fox

hell yeah I am so hype for puppets. I am so sorry my country is the way it is, but I’m glad you’ve been able to stay safe and get through our horrendous visa process. If Kat wants car recommendations, can’t go wrong with a honda civic 🤷‍♀️ I like that mine has lasted forever.

Sunny

THANK YOU i couldn't for the life of me figure out who it reminded me of and it was indeed horst lichter

Chase!

If you dont mind a smaller car i cannot recomend Mazdas enough. They are extremely reliable, retain their value well, and the mazda 3 line is trying really hard to feel like a luxury car so its pretty nice

Sunny

this is great, super excited for the full version! i'm really hoping you will make that open source video a main channel video too, it'd be amazing if that could reach as many people as possible so more people would consider switching to open source software! i'm begging you to commit to killing adobe

Peskier & Ievani

I knew the puppet reminded me of my childhood! My German mother used to watch a cooking battle (?) show on satellite tv and I you are exactly right that it looks just like him!

WishMakers

What a shocker that the open source part ended up being big enough to warrant its own video, lol. That being said the preview is enough to make me very sure that ripping into Adobe first was the right call. We can only hope that it's not too long, but quality over quantity any day of the week. I wouldn't have even thought about the tutorial angle, partially because I hadn't realized up until now how much the space has been dominated by it. Even when you don't consider Adobe advertisements I've noticed that a bunch of them feel the need to have higher production value and bloat on top to "keep up" in the space and look professional. Seeing that a bunch of Adobe's own advertutorials are big money shoots starts to explain that a bit. Very excited for the full release

Without going down into the comments, I’m guessing the second puppet is Jeremy Clarkson? Kinda looks like him but don’t know why he’d be in a video about adobe, maybe it’s something I’ve missed. Anyhow! I’ve been binging your old videos this past week and checking Patreon for an update everyday, so excited for this!

AJ

oh my god??

AJ

so glad you guys are ok! also, looks like it matters to no one but me but thanks for clearing up the deleted tweet mystery lol, i was quite curious about what sort of event caused so many to disappear at once!

Paperlanty

Love the draft video!! but wow geez I'm glad you're both okay wtf!! the puppets look great! appropriately goofy looking forward to any updates whether they have video or not! already been a very interesting topic to learn more on (also yeah honda civics are good, I get suggested toyota in general but they have such a good rep that the used toyota prices remain high) (but they are also good)

Benjamin Storm

Fully expecting Hbomb to announce that the video took so long because he learned to programme and built his own creative suite

Sage

thank you for the update!! the video seems really cool, i hope you and kat are feeling alright now after your multiple car crashes!! :( also, i completely understand the "i just wanna do a *little* more before i...." procrastination spiral lol, but more regular updates will be nice in the future! we all just like hearing from you, i think. i've personally somehow wound up listening to your deus ex human revolution video every night to fall asleep, so i do just have a parasocial fondness for you haha. hope the on-location stuff goes well, have fun and stay hydrated!!

Cleen

We are SO back also thank you and have a lovely day gang

tiger

as a fellow editor who also uses premiere for my job (no matter how many times i beg them to switch to davinci), i appreciate you voicing my rants about adobe and their useless products in a slightly more unhinged way than i already to do my coworkers

Kay Wilson

sooo looking forward to this one! adobe's subscription model is the earliest one i can think of, and it keeps me up at night thinking about the today's hell landscape of never owning anything ever was basically set into motion by them. so not surprised their entire business model has almost always been rent seeking. glad you are alive and kicking hbomb!!

Daelf Derechef

omg this is so interesting in all sorts of exciting ways, and thankfully some are very fun! looking forward to the results! :o

Chris Tierney

second puppet looks like Gene Wolfe

whatyouhadisnevercomingback

WHAAAATTT you did a panel in sf??? i wish i had known! how do i make sure im aware of a potential future CA fan meetup?

Mobius Scarf

Adobe are basically enshittification pioneers. They basically took Microsoft's "acquire your competition" business model and were like "but what if we also made everyone rent the software, too?"

Dino

I'm not in the market for a car, but you better believe I'll remember this when I am. I've been betrayed by Ford too many times.

Viva Reverie

Thank you, now I'm mad at Adobe again for even more reasons beyond the many many reasons I was already mad at Adobe 💕💕💕💕

PoloniumT

Glad you and Kay are alright! American drivers are chaotic at the best of times, so I’m not surprised by the hit and run. Hope they find a good replacement soon. As for the vid, I’m genuinely excited for when it’s done in 2034! (That’s a joke, I know it’ll be 2300.)

insidecat

kat: don't get a ford escape

Chase!

Legit american made cars just arent made to last anymore. Toyota is also good in this regard.

Alex Herter

This is crazy--so glad you are both okay. No worries on taking your time, I'm excited to see stuff when it comes out but not at the expense of health/safety, etc

Lucian

I am quite literally in the middle of negotiating a lower cost for the educational license we use at the University I work for with the Adobe rep and it is like trying to milk a stone cow. Every day I dream of liberty

Not exactly Adobe-focused, but the importance of tutorials has been weighing on my mind a lot lately. I came up in a really lush, really wonderfully weird online art scene. As much as we all like to poke fun at sites like DeviantArt, it was genuinely awesome to have such a huge community of artists across ages and skill levels, and part of what made it so damn good was how open and willing folks were to sharing tutorials for how to do any little damn thing. "Here's how to break down a hand into simple shapes," "here's how to achieve a glow effect for a lightning strike," "here's how to draw a wolf head with angel wings protruding from the temples, complete with an anatomical breakdown of pinfeathers, and what region of the canine skull is most suitable for a shoulder joint." With the rise of generative AI, I see artists pulling away from online spaces more and more (who could blame them?). I wonder how far that retreat will go, and how much "just use ai" will rush in to fill the void. Mostly I just think about how lucky I was, as a young creative, to have an internet that was, while perhaps chaotic and messy, nonetheless full of life. Anyway, glad to see this update and glad everyone is safe + healthy. A little bummed to know the open source component won't for a while yet (seeing them championed was the bit I was personally most looking forward to), but I trust that it will be better in the end for that topic to have breathing room in its own video. As for car recommendations, my partner and I have a Subaru Impreza, and we like it pretty well. It's not fancy, but it wasn't terribly expensive and you can fit the world inside. We use it to transport our kayaks and associated gear (sound/video equipment can't be too different from that, right?) Warmth and well-wishing from Chattanooga!

Johanna Shaw

Someone else who makes puppets! I'm not alone!

Glenn Davidson

Remember the W3C standard, SMIL? No? The proliferation of Flash pretty much undermined adoption of the open SMIL format for over a decade. It used SVG for vector animation back in 1999 (very slowly) and even Adobe eventually provided support for creating with it. Now SMIL is in a bit of development limbo, but it's still a widely supported open standard. On the one hand: Flash enabled creative animations and games with approachable tools. I miss it for that. On the other: it was a buggy, low-accessibility, platform-specific, proprietary, 600lb-gorilla client-side plugin that relied on browser security being "optional". After Apple (and TBH mobile phone browsers in general) dropped Flash support because existing vector Flash content was too slow (and insecure) on early phones, Adobe started trying to plug the many security holes that were leading to frequent data leak and hack headlines. It wasn't that long until they killed it. I guess it was going to cost them more than Flash was worth to get it to a state (on phones or otherwise) that wasn't a huge problem. I don't miss it for that. Killing Flash wasn't too different to IE and ActiveX. Both were once huge and not necessarily for the best reasons, though they did probably cause more high-profile mess due to how many consultancies used them to build unmaintainable business apps 😬😅

What a treat to wake up to! I’m more excited than an old person should get. Please plan that California meet up.

I think the second puppet is Jacob Geller

Vedika Bhatnagar

meetup yes please!!! ty for the update it’s good to know you’re doing okay and i’m very excited to see the full video!

sid azoulay

loving the video so far! if any fellow patrons arent already aware, this video (https://youtu.be/I4mdMMu-3fc?si=DxdrPUHrzBpNd7Fp) about paid-for creative software and their free open-source alternatives was a great watch! highly recommend if youre looking for something to pass the time until this cosmic cycle's laughable excuse for a thinkpiece 😁

Hollywhirl

This has made my day! Also, UK meet-up though? I mean, we’ll likely never be as enthusiastic as our US counterparts but still

Let me know if you make it up to Nevada City, CA! Will share some good river spots

Kat is literally so awesome. Looking forward to the rest of this! Also good luck with replacing your car, Kat :(

Giant Robot Scorpion

Ahh, that takes me back. My first car ever, I got into an accident that crushed in the passenger side front door. That bit about having to climb out over the driver's seat was a mini nostalgia trip, for me and me alone. Glad to know you are both okay... although, shitty luck that Kat had two accidents in so short a span. I'm L.A.-area local; if there were a meetup, I might just have to set aside my natural misanthropy and go join in.

Tee Coli

This looks great, I can't wait to see what the puppets are for in the finished product. For Kat, I would recommend a Toyota of some kind. As long as you take care of them they last forever

emchovy

Kat, get a Toyota, they're dependable and maintenance costs are low.

Lisa Haves

Agreed, the layering effect from the Plagiarism video would be excellent there

Lisa Haves

wait what did I miss about Adam Conover

Christopher Baggett

Haven't gotten the chance to watch this yet but, uh, goddamn, glad everyone is okay.

Becca Rudd

Kat, get a Subaru. You can usually get good deals on insurance because they are very safe and I will never go back to another car. You'll have to pry my little hatchback Impreza from my cold dead hands

Whatever you do, do not remove Flash murdering the image file.

1. Did you actually go to the small ghost town the comedy skit for the sound slider bar to see if the opening shot was filmed with a drone or if there is a building across the stress with conveniently placed windows? 2. I'm not sure the joke about a video covering creative software getting sucked up by giant companies, the history of that, the impacts on people and how it shapes peoples ability to create being the final exam. EndVertex's almost completely animated video "For-Profit (Creative) Software" has 718k views and is her only long video (the others look like little animation projects) and covers that from the perspective of an animator who cannot own the tools she needs to work, those tools randomly being destroyed, needing to constantly learn new tools but the price being out of reach for most and the companies, their policies, histories, etc I really doubt everyone who watched (and rewatched-she has a soothing voice) that video works in animation, I think the internet yearns for videos about software Thanks so much and hope you and Kat are well

Is Part 2: Acquisitions Incorporated a Clank! reference???? Clank! Is my favorite board game of all time

Extrabelasting

Alright if you ask for it, let’s be a bit meaner. When the conflict about sponsorships and integrity came up, I just couldn’t help thinking about those deleted tweets. You know like ~If you’re wondering which country is doing genocide it’s the one trying to dunk on the UN for saying „war crimes are bad“~ Of course now we know why since it would’ve prevented the entire shoot and possibly the safety of your crew. At least that’s how I interpret the „to be extremely careful what I said on social media about the country (and some of its allies)“ part. I don’t like it honestly, it’s self-censorship after all and I think it was the wrong choice. But in my head I compare it to Ryan being unable to endorse what he really thinks. I’m more mad at our _current_ state of things than a youtuber deleting old criticism. I’m sure you weren’t filled with glee when hitting delete. Sorry if my feedback doesn’t sound coherent but it came up in my mind. On another note, I’m glad to hear Kat and you survived those crashes. Stay safe.

Witz619

Love the flash with a gun running joke, cant wait to see the rest of the video

Dihuh

Glad you and Kat are safe! Also really enjoyed this video and looking forward to the rest. As a working artist in the US animation industry it's fascinating to see the origins of Adobe and now it makes so much more sense why it's so ridiculously disorganized lol. Really enjoyed your segment on the tutorial landscape as well. When I was young I wasn't told I needed expensive programs to create art, and now I see young people advocating for these programs as if you wouldn't be an artist without them. The corporatization of art is awful.

Kate Menzies

the adobe acrobat logo looks like a thong. looking forward to the full video!

KSCHatch

For the record, if the car is no longer driveable, it is not a "minor crash". I am glad you are both okay ANd soft tissue damage can be an insidious sneaky little thing, so please take care of your bodies and maybe go to a physiotherapist and a doctor (I realise this is an insane suggestion to make when you are in the Land Of Only Profits Matter health "care") but still.

Beatrice Falby

i beg you to include even the smallest diss towards indesign. its an incomprehensible nightmare to work with. every second i spend in that program has me ripping my hair out and cursing the universe for making me enjoy printmaking as a medium

Beatrice Falby

A few weeks ago, he shilled for a crypto company, figuring he could take their money as a goof and run. Really, all he did was legitimize crypto just a liiiiitle more since "Famed internet skeptic stares into The Orb" or whatever is too good a headline. He did an apology about it and everything, but his rep has taken a big hit.

Alexander Powers

Thanks for the update Hbomb! I can't wait to see more. One thing I was wondering while watching the Flash Player portion of the video: I remember when that happened I was told that the reason the plug was being pulled on Flash was because they had found a large, dangerous security breach which would have been impossible to fix without rebuilding the software from the ground up. And I remember everyone I knew repeating this and generally accepting it as fact. Now, I don't know anything about software so I don't know if it's plausible or just gibberish made to sound good, but is there any truth to it? Is it just a lie made up by Adobe to make the deletion seem more justified? A distortion of the facts with a kernel of truth? If this rumor is anywhere near as big as it seemed to be to me at the time (such that everyone seemed to accept it as the Facts Of The Matter) it might be worth briefly addressing in this segment. I don't mean to add more to your already overflowing plate but even as a long time fan it made the bit where you briefly mentioned holes in the software needing to be plugged seem like it was glossing over a major factor (assuming it's true in the first place).

The Brad Show

Interesting thing about Photoshop is that the creators, John and Thomas Knoll, developed the software for the James Cameron film The Abyss in order to easily create 3-D textures from photographs.

Audrey

Love that one of the topics mentioned in this is, unironically, ethics in games journalism lmfao

Noelle Pointer

Wait, what do you have against Soda Stream? I haven't seen anything they've sponsored, so I don't know if it's particularly cringe or what, but I've had mine since the before times and still use it regularly. Fizzy water ain't cheap if you get it by the cl ☹️

Sam Brunner

So all I got from this was that Kat causes a car crash (I’m just kidding I love yall so much and this was a great watch, can’t wait for the full vid!)

Jackson Wilson

Seconded. The people who designed InDesign are straight out of a Kafka novel

minnow

they're Isreal based and (used to have?) a factory in the west bank. equating sodastream with advertising war crimes gets a mild eye roll from me though

Moritz Musings

Awesome, happy to hear you guys are fine and that you are proud of the video. I like this section so far, I agree with comments that the „in cooperation with adobe“ bit might be too long but I can also see the vision of an oppressive faux tutorial landscape. In all cases, thanks for the update and have fun in the US of A.

Moritz Musings

And since you can’t say it: Free Palestine, fuck ICE, support your neighbours, resist fashists and band together. Resistance is important and necessary.

Jessica

So I haven't watched the video yet, so don't know the broader context this is being discussed in, but I was a dev at the time (still am, but I was then too) and can answer if the security issue was real. Yes, and then some. So Flash allows someone to run code in your browser on your computer. The guardrails on this were very light. The bug they found let someone run any code they like on your computer as soon as the site loaded, without asking. However, it was actually the final straw of a whole pile of hay of bad bugs that had come up over the years, because letting a stranger run code on your computer is just really hard to lock down. It wasn't just Adobe making the decision either, a bunch of browser developers were already discussing blocking Flash because they were tired of having to work around the vulnerabilities it subjected them to, and when the end of life announcement came, that got locked in. It also didn't help that people had been managing to accomplish a lot of the same functionality with JS and newer* versions of HTML, which (for reasons beyond the scope of this) were significantly easier to secure. Edit: OK watched it now. I think the summary is fine in context, and I'm guessing the reason he doesn't hit it as hard is because the main point he's trying to make is less about its viability as software and more about the centralization of control.

minnow

so glad to hear you and Kat are okay!

Noelle Pointer

Well shit. Time to buy into a competing ecosystem 🤦

Fun fact: I was taught After Effects by a guy that knew the creators. If you want some really deep lore: 1) The creators of After Effects were also in a band that made an anti Bush music video. https://youtu.be/5Obl4h9Jro0?si=qUUalerltTRpl96Y 2) The teacher that taught me After Effects was the designer and art director for Guitar Hero. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ryan_Lesser 3) After Effects broke into the commercial market through Phil Tippet. The stop motion animator for Star Wars who recommended they use AE to stitch together 3D animation and live action for Jurassic Park. He also directed Mad God so at least he still gets to be cool and weird. 4) The code name for After Effects was “lort” and named after a dish in a restaurant that still exists in Rhode Island. Adobe taking other people’s work, erasing their contributions, squashing creators that actually use it, and eventually making it useless is very connected in the After Effects story specifically.

James

Hated they tried to drag you into the whole contrapoints/Israel debate , but nice to know there was a very specific reason you didn't give any pushback

Noelle Pointer

Luckily, I don't need a car. Madrid public transit is pretty much awesome 🫶

Batti1358

Hey like just a quick note: when you do the "in partnership with adobe" segment, maybe mix up the genders of the first influencers you show more equally; showing 10-15 women in a row doing something you [mildly] disapprove of set off my "Wamen destroyed [Industry], waah" whine detector.

Kovacs

Well you've got me hooked. Looking forward to the full documentary. Kind of crazy to see how many of the applications I used at college, or had the demo versions of through magazine cover mounts got bought and killed by Adobe over the years.

Anthony Behnke

The fact that Harry is aware of the existence of Norm Macdonald advertising the ManGrate makes me happy

Glenn Davidson

Yeah, I agree with your take. I mentioned W3Cs SMIL in an earlier comment, as I think Adobe's behaviour is relevant to it's fate. IIRC Flash (and Flash creation tools) dominance was one of the main reasons it failed to get decent support across browsers for about a decade. IMO Flash also really slowed browsers adopting SVG too, but at least it had much more obvious utility outside the web to keep it going.

Elsie Hupp

When was the last time Linus Sebastian ever gave anyone actual Tech Tips? At least he only accepts sponsorships from companies that don’t overlap with the product segments he reviews, like low-tech men’s grooming products. (We’ll know we’re cooked when that testicle shaver wants to connect to your WiFi.)

Margaret Hall

I’m an architect and I’m so so excited for this. I’ve loved all of your videos but this is the first real time takedown of an entity that makes my professional life worse and more complicated on a daily basis. Looking forward to autodesk catching some strays too

In Natalie Wynn’s defense, being a depressed opium addict is a coherent response to Israel and the United States and the United Kingdom doing a genocide in Gaza. Bullying a depressed opium addict into typing out an incoherent Notes App post about the genocide in Gaza doesn’t mean that the depressed opium addict has done anything wrong; it means that maybe we shouldn’t be approaching depressed opium addicts and expecting them to be Key Opinion Leaders about genocide. FWIW my response to the same criticism about Harry was that he hasn’t posted a main channel video since Oct 7th that wasn’t already in the works significantly before Oct 7th. (I did literally tell people that James Somerton should stop bombing Gaza, though.) The criticism that Harry could have done something similar to the Mermaids charity stream to raise money for Gaza relief seems significantly more valid, though. Noah Samsen dressed up as a sexy French maid in order to raise money for Gaza relief; why can’t Harry dress up as a sexy French maid in order to raise money for Gaza relief, too? Anyway, by the same measure Natalie Wynn is a Sims 2 streamer. Yes, Natalie Wynn could dress up as a sexy French maid in order to raise money for Gaza relief, but because she’s a depressed opium addict (not to mention a girl) what we get is her wearing full-face Instagram makeup and an uwu tshirt.

Mark

That separate video has never been more in my wheelhouse, I've been using Debian since 2009 to make shitty memes in GIMP. But I, too, hate Adobe so the first video is also gonna be great.

Spaceman

I use InDesign every day. I truly hate how they have done nothing to make it easier to collaborate with the files.

Johanna Wikström-Thörnros

No better commentary on the state of the US than someone arriving there and being unable to be as free with their speech as they were before for fear of repercussions.

Ro the Lion

Yayyyy~ So stoked to watch this mini-draft! :D This came at an excellent time too, because I too am recovering from having my passenger door impacted and unopenable -- though luckily the delivery van that did it had nowhere to go, as there were cars ahead in both lanes. Looking forward to your soothing wit, 'tis balm to the brain.

Manatee Publicist

Hoping and praying you get to the IMMENSELY DISRUPTIVE AND PROBLEMATIC Adobe-Pantone proprietary color issues! Unhinged behavior on both side imo, but I’m not an unrestricted Design Software Oligarch so what do I know

james rhodes

The whole section on tutorials created by the companies that have made the technology they're "teaching" about reminds me of a story of when I tried to become a .NET engineer. When I graduated with my computer science degree and started looking for programming jobs, I noticed how most places either wanted a javascript dev (awful language) OR they wanted a .NET engineer for full-stack web development, which I chose to learn instead. Microsoft made the framework and the C# language that you use with it, and the official .NET website for looking up C# and .NET syntax recommended a playlist on the official "dotnet" youtube channel. The basic gist for getting started with .NET in Visual Studio is to download a specific package of project templates, and then start a new one project from a specific template. The first episode of the tutorial series I found details the package, the template, and then looks around the project folder for a more thorough view. Excpet for the fact that this tutorial was 4 years old when I watched it and does not work at all. The package I needed to download was gone, replaced with 2 or 3 other projects that MAY contain what I needed from the tutorial, and then even when I installed it, the project templates were also gone, and the ones I had did completed different things than what I was looking for. So it seems that Microsoft had rethought some of the things regarding the functionality of .NET for some reason (probably user-unfriendly), and then just forgot to update the tutorial so anybody thinking that perhaps the creators of the software may be the ones to go to to learn about it are reduced to fools. Obviously checking and potentially remaking the tutorial every time there's been a major update is time consuming (and they seem to have replaced the tutorial since then, so credit to them), but it still just reeks of incompetence that nobody bothered to check this shit. At any rate it did mean that I realised that web development in general sucks ass and I instead went into counter-terrorism. I can't code you a website, but I do know the components of an IED and IID and also the warning signs that you've been sent a postal bomb. So that's something.

Helena Harper

Would like some more clarification about the Brainmind residency portion of the video. Like, did Kat sign off on the grant program without you? How did a grant program with your money even enter the conversation without you? Were you meeting to specifically talk about making a grant program or did that just happen for a completely unrelated reason?

Josh Grey

Now curious if Hbomberguy knows about the D&D series Acquistions Incorporated, or if that's just a coincidence.

Helena Harper

has she been blaming opium for being incredibly strange about israel gaza? what the hell are you talking about

Kat

Oh man that didn’t even register for me because I was looking through hundreds of of them and it all blended together!! Well reconfigure this if it gives that impression.

Kat

I’ve been buying and making my friends get Drinkmate for yeeeears when I found out about Sodastream.

Izzy Killeen

Some notes so far: 1) If you meant it when you said that ActionScript was the only programming language you ever learnt, then *please* learn another one. It's never been easier; there are so many options; and I *really* want to see that video game you've been working on forever come to fruition. The Godot Engine uses C# and C++, just sayin'. 2) [EDIT: I got this bit wrong, see my reply to myself below.] The bit about NordVPN felt like an oblique dig at Tom Scott? I think you should make it clear who you're criticising here: if it's not Tom Scott you're talking about, you should say so (or write about another similar incident if one occurred); and if it is, you should be explicit about it so we're all on the same page about what you're saying. 3) I never knew that Adobe were landlords of creative software! Otherwise, I'm loving it so far!

TyrosineTek

As someone who’s done video editing as a hobby off and on for the last 20 years, I’m glad I’ve never been overly reliant on a single software. Da Vinci Resolve is fantastic and I can actually work around the limitations of the free version.

Helena Harper

on the nordvpn bit, it does seem weird to subtweet someone like that without just. saying who. like whats going on there

Noelle Pointer

I think i might just try to hack my water fizzerator to take CO2 from other sources. No point in trashing what I already have, but also probably best to not throw more money at that brand

This preview being posted when it is, mere days/hours before YouTube implements an utter affront to privacy in the name of ""~ * ~Protecting Children~ * ~"", and the early portion of this preview talking about how we aren't the real consumer of these products anymore reaaaaaally hits. edit: hit enter too soon, wasn't done, need to remember to shift+enter So, first and foremost- the whole age-verification thing, genuinely good luck with that, I sincerely hope that enough of us throw enough of a loud angry fit that YouTube (which is really Google in a trench coat) walks it back because otherwise a lot of creators like you are going to be very negatively impacted I imagine. For the actual preview though- it's shaping up well! I definitely want to see the rest of the video, this chunk def hooked me so, well done, did its job. The part with all the echoing "partnered with Adobe" could do with being a smidgen shorter in my opinion though, I swear I was feeling my soul exit my body there. But then, that's likely the intended effect, ain't it?

Alice Alysia

I second this, and I'll offer a critical piece of advice it literally took me over a decade to realise/remember. The best way to learn to code is by tweaking an existing project (huh, so that's how I was able to learn java by modding minecraft back in 2011), and by reading up on stuff as you go. The only things you really need to understand in advanced are: Variables are in fact, a thing, that does indeed exist! Data Types are how you explain to your computer what words, numbers, on off switches, boxes you can put said things in, and lists of things... why do you need to explain these things? Visit jsdate.wtf to find out now! Finally, there's two main syntaxes that everything is more or less a variation of: Java form, which basically means you put in these guys {} and some of these ; And python form, which means that you control where things live by: Indenting them: Like this; Doesn't this feel; Like a great idea where nothing could go wrong? Beyond that, loops? Pretty useful. There's multiple ways to check conditions, and I advise trying to avoid checking conditions as best you can, you'll learn more that way! Otherwise. Uhh. That's it. Oh, wait, one more thing. I have a theory that Rust is easier to learn if you haven't already learned an inherritance focused language like C# or C++, and that it might not actually be as hard as people make it out to be in that context.

OnlyUkeThatMatters

for Kat: Car-wise, I wholeheartedly recommend a dark grey 2011 Toyota Corolla, ideally with a dent in the back bumper on the passenger side, along with a combination of two stickers on the driver's side of the bumper which together honor both local antifascists and a now-deceased local therapy llama (RIP Rojo) unfortunately, this is a uniquely incredible vehicle, and i don't know if any of the other dark grey (or any other colors) 2011 (or any other years) Toyota (or any other makes) Corollas (or any other models) are as lovable as this one and I'm not teamed up with Toyota or anything like that, it's just that singing the glories of this one particular dark grey 2011 Toyota Corolla helps heal my heart

Alice Alysia

If you talk about lotus 123, CDOS and embrace, expand, extinguish I will be so, so fucking happy. It would be funny if that lead could somehow be traced back to my obsessive and incessant ramblings on microsoft, but I doubt it lmao.

Aaron Nemoyten

Wait, are you currently in the Bay Area? I would love to buy you and Kat lunch sometime! Seriously, I'm in the Peninsula so if you're actually heading to Adobe HQ in San Jose, that's only about 30 minutes away in typical Bay Area traffic.

SuchaCaz

If this video is as good as this portion was, it's gonna be a hamper on my productivity. I had never heard of Film Riot before, and I had no idea they made such in-depth tutorials. Does anyone here still use their tutorials today? I'd love to learn some filmmaking skills after finishing Kramer's tutorials (hallowed be his name). Also, if you ever do a meetup in SoCal, let us know! I'll happily show up!

For cars I definitely recommend a Camry or a Civic, 2000s or 10s models are best. I got rear ended once on my way to community college and it wasn't fun, I was lucky to not get any injuries whatsoever but my car(a 1998 Civic) was totaled so I had to sell it to someone who basically wanted to use it on their farm. After that I inherited my grandmothers 1998 Camry(as she'd lost one of her legs to smoking so she couldn't drive anymore) and i've been driving that ever since, it's been pretty reliable for the most part.

darkest hour

Never liked Adobe myself, they actually tried to charge me MORE money for cancelling the subscription then it would've cost me to just keep being subscribed, I posted about that on Reddit about a decade or so ago and while most people were on my side there were a few Adobe fanboys trying to defend it saying "oh it's like when you get charged for cancelling cable early blah blah blah"(I won't even get into how asinine and nonsensical of a comparison that is)fortunately I found a way around it by deleting Adobe from my recurring payments on Paypal and then cancelling my sub and it worked, never got charged a single cent more after that.

You aren't exactly able to free anywhere else either, i'd hate to be a trans person in the U.K. right now good lord.

ChibiLlama🌈🌟

In behalf of your American audience, we're sorry. We suck, we know.

darkest hour

I will say i'm disturbed by some of the antisemitism by some of the "Free Palestine" groups. That one student turned out have some absolutely vile and sickening beliefs to the point where I no longer have any real sympathy for him, I hate that he's been made a martyr now because he's not the kind of person who has any idea what he's actually talking about. It's one thing to just criticize Israel's government(and I certainly have)but going after regular citizens who have no actual say in what Bibi and acting like they are ALL EEEEEEEEVIL is beyond the pale. I dare anyone to still support this guy after reading this Mel Gibson-esque bullshit from his garbage interview with Ezra Klein: https://www.commentary.org/seth-mandel/yelling-at-jews/

darkest hour

yeah same here, i'm tired of people acting like one is EEEEEEEEEEVIL just for say playing Xbox cause of Microsoft providing some tech to Israel.

darkest hour

My mom got a Subaru recently and i've been impressed with it so it's not a bad choice, Camry is also pretty safe.

darkest hour

I got rear-ended once and was lucky to walk away without a single scratch, my car wasn't so lucky though.

darkest hour

I concur, I inherited a 1998 Camry from my grandmother and it still works great.

darkest hour

Toyota or Honda are definitely good choices. My Civic lasted me a good while until I got rear-ended, but it was safe enough that I walked away without a single scratch.

darkest hour

you think that's bad try driving in China of the Philippines, there's a reason for those jokes about Asian drivers-you pretty much take your life in your hands when driving over there.

darkest hour

The Ford Focus was good, too bad Ford no longer seems interested in making Sedans.

darkest hour

Yeah concur on the Civic, that was my first car and lasted me a while, I might still have it if I hadn't gotten rear ended in college, but I did walk away without a scratch so that tells you how safe they are.

darkest hour

it's only really fascist if you're in the red states, it's pretty peaceful here in blue states like IL.

darkest hour

America ain't dead yet, no way we're letting cadet bone spurs take over.

darkest hour

UK seems like a dangerous place to be right now, at least if you're trans.

darkest hour

It's not hard to imagine why someone would want to live here, at least in the blue states at any rate, I certainly have zero desire to ever leave here.

darkest hour

if there's one thing the US is good at, it's suing people for damages so hopefully that asshole that hit them gets sued big time. I was lucky that the guy who rear-ended me was nice about(as it was an accident anyways, the road I got on can get difficult to see on if the sun is out in just the right spot and the guy behind me didn't see me until it was too late)

Zig Justice

I like that your handle is that of a great game series. I agree that day-to-day stuff isn't too horrible in blue oases, but that doesn't change the trajectory of the country or the massive amount of damage that has already been done. The country as a whole is undeniably in the grip of a fascist regime.

darkest hour

so tired of people hating on Contrapoints just because she does not have the exact opinion that certain holier-then-thou self-proclaimed "progressives" want her to have.

Jesse

A good update Harry! Only tangentially related, but I know a bunch of folks have been side-eyeing a lot of video essayists for not going all in on the present genocide commentary lately, especially after a certain individual defeatist post on the matter, but I feel like you have a pretty solid reason not to with that part about your Visa acquisition and how invasive & political the background check has become. Do you think it's worth mentioning in some sphere?

Holton Huntington

Plan a Bay Area meet up! That would be incredible

Actually a Cat Girl

" Kat is also looking for car recommendations." As a mechanic and car enthusiast who loves driving Chevrolets: Get a Toyota if you want gas or hybrid, or a Hyundai or Kia if you want to go all electric.

Kat

Oh does the nordvpn sponsorship thing seem like a dig? We have a few friends who do nordvpn sponsorships (one of whom might be doing a cameo) and the point being made was that it wasn’t especially problematic to be paid to promote them if you’re not a security expert people come to for security advice/reviews. I don’t actually think the security breach in 2018 was actually a big deal as far as breaches go when considering vpns lmao. But really, I just really liked one of our friend’s sponsorship ads for nord and used it as a counterpoint when we were discussing what makes a sponsorship more or less problematic. Philosophically though, I’m not sure where I stand on naming people if it doesn’t seem necessary. Given the platform these videos have, naming somebody critically does hold tremendous weight.

Izzy Killeen

hbomb has been very vocal about it on Twitter and then Bluesky (but with the recent need to appease the federal government, his socials have been kind of dead), but there have been discussions about whether he should make a video about it, and the consensus has been that he just doesn't have the right style to treat *such* a horrific subject. Our boy is a clown, which is great! but it does mean that beyond a certain level of graveness he just isn't equipped to cover a subject tastefully. "Should this video essayist make a video about Palestine?" is a question which *can* be rightfully answered "no"; one of the reasons that Contrapoints's response was so shitty was that she was perfectly equipped to make a video if she actually gave a shit. hbomb really isn't, and that's fine.

Kat

Also wait what did Tom Scott do??

Tee Coli

Yeah, I have a 2017 RAV4, got over 100k miles on it, and it still runs like a dream.

Kat

Also excellent advice re:coding! Harry has been playing with godot for ages either gd script. When I got my CS/math degree I started out as a Java girly (with light C++ but it’s all forgotten) and always wanted to pick up python properly and then I can mess around with GD script!!!

Kat

We used the meeting time he missed to develop a grants program (both Angie and I have run programs like this before) and then I pitched it to Harry with mild bullying overtones.

Izzy Killeen

Okay so, some of this was down to me not listening properly the first time, but I'll go over the whole context I had when writing about this point. A few years ago, Tom Scott made a video about how VPN advertising up to that point (and possibly beyond) had been misleading in ways that he found dishonest, and in the introduction to that video, he explained how a non-expert recommending a VPN for misleading reasons didn't make them at fault because they're not reasonably expected to know why the talking points are dishonest; but *he* would be at fault for propagating those dishonest talking points because he *is* essentially an expert. Some time after that, he started taking sponsorships from NordVPN, explaining that this time around he was not being asked to say dishonest or misleading things, and my personal judgment was that he was indeed living up to his initial statement of principles based on how he pitched the service to us; he talked a lot about getting better deals on car rentals and how you can use VPNs to circumvent local content restrictions (with the proviso that it might be against the streaming platform's terms of service). I actually signed up to NordVPN myself based on one of these adverts! I admit I was rather careless in my first listening, and didn't register hbomb talking about how the person he was subtweeting did tech reviews of VPNs amongst other details which to my knowledge don't apply to Tom Scott. But the rhetoric in that section matched that of Tom Scott's original video on VPNs so closely that it felt like a reference; it conjured him up in my mind, and then with the idea of him primed I heard criticism of this tech expert for promoting NordVPN, and I unconsciously jumped to the conclusion that this might be a subtweet of Tom Scott for selling out to NordVPN after he had made *the* video criticising VPN sponsorships. So yeah, I was quite careless with this critique 😅 for which I apologise.

Kat

What kind of sphere are you thinking?

Sebastien Rempel

Would doing a big charity stream for the PCRF or something be an option?

Cuzn Ed

Okay, but i can’t find The Check Out This Button Show on any of the streaming services.

Gwen Coney

Elsie, that is a very weird response tbqh

AbsolutelyEthan

The video so far has made me very grateful for m0nkrus lol

Harvey Afrifa

all i take from this is how much Kat does and goes through 😭

Helena Harper

Thank you for answering my question. I appreciate it. I was really thrown off by the whole explanation he gave about it, especially given how little the Brainmind Residency has been talked about in the four years since it happened, which made me wonder if the seeming lack of interest on his part to follow up on promise(s) to show the outcomes of the grant program was related to that. I think the Brainmind Residency was a cool idea and I wish I could have known more about it, and clearly there were some results from it given the very brief flashes we see in the preview video, but getting that information seems weirdly low priority, which is a shame. I think more people would be interested if it was talked about more than once a year lol, but maybe I'm projecting since I was the only person in this entire comment section to ask about it.

Victoria Spencer

Dear Kat: stay far, far away from 2015 Ford Focuses and Fiestas. Their transmissions are awful and will brick themselves. Ask me how I know. Toyotas are good, I’d find something there.

Claire Carey

-checks speaking time for 46k words- oh HELL yeah dude!! This was such an awesome thing to get in my inbox, great news to start my day. Absolutely zero rush, I hope you two are hanging in there, the whiplash improves soon, and you can get as much fun and relaxation as possible in bizarro land. The first section was great, I am so deeply pumped that this is the topic y'all are covering. As someone who taught myself Photoshop in 4th grade, used to do studio portraiture, vector art, and did graphics and layout for a school newspaper for most of high school, it's been fucking infuriating to watch Adobe rip all of these programs out of my hands. My career went in a different direction so I can't justify paying for it, and I'd be so happy to keep using the CS4 (and previous versions) that I PHYSICALLY owned for my own art, but of course that wouldn't allow them to squeeze me for more money. Most creative professionals, and particularly large teams would have kept paying to update creative suites in perpetuity if they weren't entirely garbage. I'm from Seattle and I had family members who were graphic designers and photographers, so I got to go to Adobe workshop nights as a kid, and it felt so cool to be in a room with that many creatives all eating pizza and laughing about clients together. It's interesting how sour things turn when a company you've had a near-lifelong parasocial relationship with turns around and absolutely shits on anyone who made them money. My only feedback so far is to give yourself another opportunity to say Jeff Gerstmann's name correctly lol. I've got a bunch of reasons in the tank to go to either end of California right now, so definitely feel free to give us an extra excuse to come down! Sending you both tons and tons of appreciation ☺️

Ema Bícová

TWO car accidents? Isn't that a bit greedy? (Glad you're ok!!)

StephieF

Seconding any sort of Toyota, really. I had a Rav4 for 10+ years and they’re such reliable cars and incredibly easy to repair even when they do need it.

StephieF

That’s not a Jordan Peterson puppet, is it? 😂

Joseph Catrambone

Glad you were able to swing by open sauce! We were lucky to have you. My partner and I didn't stay for Q&A because we're both socially and privately awkward individuals without much to say. I enjoyed the video so far and have my own list of gripes with Adobe, too, like the Mixamo acquisition or the texture inpainting patent (patch match). All that said, sorry about the car accidents. Bummer. :(

Allie Farris

So good...can't wait for the rest. ... Welp, off I go to rewatch all your past videos again

Alice Alysia

So, recently I've learned of a project called pinta, it's a fork of paint.net and it's really matured into something great. Kinda recommending it to everyone lately hehe

Moritz Musings

This seems nearly like an advanced bot reply, I mentioned no one. Did not call out regular citizens (though many of them are complicit!) and yet you talk about one student?

Júlia Ferrari

When you told jacksfilms you were working on a video about Adobe, I was like, "Hbomb, I already love you, you don't need to convince me." I became a Patreon not long after and the notification for this post made me jump with joy last morning lol. I am a graphic designer and have been working mainly with Photoshop for around 20 years (Illustrador, InDesign and Dimension are also in the pile of Adobe programs I frequently use/used). I love Photoshop, for the past 8 years or so I've been studying how o bend the program on making what a need for very specific situations and achieving that has become very satisfying for me. But for each passing moment, watching Adobe screw this program and make their predatory business system even shitier has made me so angry with this company and fed up with their antics that I've been searching for substitutes ever since, but when I worked at a company that was very hard to do because their became the fucking industry standard. Anyway, now I am a freelancer and have been learning how to use the Affinity programs and always searching for open source alternatives. For 3D stuff I found Blender in my heart and happily joined their cult, I will spread their word as far as I can with every opportunity I have. So yeah, looking forward for this masterpiece of yours to be completed! Take your time and take care you guys! ❤️

gracey

i've always hated this attitude of progressive creators requiring some kind of Doctor's Note to not talk about literal genocide on their youtube channels. i think it's actually completely reasonable to not want to do that, especially when your whole thing is politicomedy.. there is no appropriate or sensitive way to cover israel and gaza on that kind of medium. i don't know why people keep demanding creators to do so. if a creator feels inspired to do something like host a fundraiser or share resources then that's great we should celebrate that. but what are we doing by Not celebrating those people and instead focusing our energy on asking those who aren't basically "why are you such a bad person??" like what goal are we trying to accomplish besides punishing the leftist for being a bad leftist

gracey

glad you both are ok and so excited for big video <3

luvkirby4ever

Incredible work so far! I'm glad to hear that you two are okay. As an American I'd like to apologize for *gestures broadly*... it's both hilarious and horrifying that you're stuck over here for a bit. Take all the time you need working on stuff- I'm incredibly excited to see the full thing!

Is “LinkedIn Learning” (AKA Lynda) any good these days? What about SkillShare?

Chongoli

Hey Harry! Fantastic first bit. I just subscribed to your patreon like a week ago, so it's great to be getting an update immediately! ;D Can't wait for the rest of your video. Please take your time.

I just about went crazy with how many “partnered with Adobe” clips XD

Regarding ActionScript: ActionScript has been since version 1.0 an implementation of ECMAScript, which is to say ActionScript nowadays is a sister language to JavaScript. There are a handful of other ECMA-262 implementations, but the main one is JavaScript: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ECMAScript For this reason, going from ActionScript to JavaScript (and from there to TypeScript or even Go) shouldn’t be too difficult. FWIW Adobe Animate (née Flash Professional) has had the ability to export standards-based formats since not long after Adobe finally accepted that Apple wasn’t going to let them port the Flash/AIR runtime to iOS. Nowadays most of the big interactive-media authoring suites (animations, websites, games, apps, etc.) are middleware that let developers release projects for a wide variety of platforms rather than having to deal with each platform’s unique APIs. See, for comparison, Facebook’s React Native, which uses native APIs (i.e. not just web APIs) for Facebook’s React library, which adds a bunch of higher-level conveniences for web development and which uses Microsoft TypeScript, which is (or is shortly to be) another superset of JavaScript, i.e. another implementation of ECMAScript and which has recently been ported to be able to use Google Go for the backend. All of these languages and libraries are open-source, albeit with permissive rather than copyleft licenses, including ActionScript itself. tl;dr if you learned ActionScript back in the day and kept on using it there are plenty of options for applying your knowledge and experience to competing products. (I’m not super familiar with the alternatives to Adobe Animate as an animation tool, though, but I’m sure there are options out there that use conventional JavaScript or even TypeScript.)

Leave some car accidents for the rest of us amiright!

How do you not define Tool and Patrick Rothfuss as prolific? Tool sell out massive concerts and are one of the most beloved alt metal bands ever, and Rothfuss is a very well known fantasy author and has received so much love for the first 2 of The Name Of The Wind books.

e

hbomb video out soon?? maybe 2025 isn’t entirely doomed

Kovacs

He likely means prolific in terms of content frequency, rather than status and profile. People tend to use prolific to describe quantity as in 'he is a prolific goalscorer". Rothfuss is infamous for how long Doors of Stone is taking.

SerialWriter

Ahhhh California meet-up? Say more!! I'm in Los Angeles, so not the Bay Area, but if you're headed down SoCal way, I'll be there!

Kovacs

How is Darktable for cataloging? I'd moved onto DxO Photolab 8 for editing and I love it. But Lightroom for indexing, collections and gallery syncing is the one I've not been able to escape from as the alternatives people suggest have also fallen to the subscription model.

Lucero

time to drive across the country for a meetup!

airborneice

"a lot of the back four fifths of the video are being shot on an actual location (which we’re driving out to in like 12 hours)" ngl, before I watched the video I was honest to god wondering if hbomb was planning to break into adobe headquarters and film his takedown of the company whilst being hunted down by security staff (also, so happy to have an update and looking at the progress photos so excited for what's to come, and glad y'all are doing good despite the car accidents... it looks like you're really pulling out all the stops for this and I can't wait)

Jesse

Fair point well-made, but also I think about the segment in the anti-vax video about the unnecessary child spinal taps was severely grave and expertly handled in the appropriate tone. On the other hand there's also the fact that he is now the premier meme on the existential horror of climate change. Goofs have a way of piercing with the truth that deadpan earnestness often just can't, and the tragic truth is that a lot of people just aren't willing/able to be educated without being entertained. Having said all of that, please don't get me wrong: I am by no means one of these ardent believers that every left-leaning content creator must immediately put all their chips in on the present humanitarian crises right now right immediately now or else they merit a cancel. Harry's other vids are important too, and perhaps do focus into his pre-garnered strengths more. If there's no Hbomb thing on Palestine then I'm 100% fine with that, only I don't want the reason to be that he doesn't think he's worthy. And I'm also just worried about the rhetorical zeitgeist shifting against heavily-considered, highly researched long-form educational videos with what seems like a lot of spite and anger, and turning towards short-form, reactionary train-of-thought ramblers. As for "What kind of sphere"........ what am I, a lawyer?

Gert Pickert

glad to hear youre both okay after those car accidents, take it easy :)

magda

staging an elaborate hoax about being replaced by your murderous doppelgänger is such a cool idea tbh also obsessed with the bootcut jeans you’re wearing in those clips like who’s this diva

Aaron Nemoyten

Okay, I watched the video. Awesome, as always, and I was so sad when it ended. I feel like you're spending a little TOO much time on the Youtuber/sponsorship thing. I think the most important point - that Adobe can basically use relatively small amounts of money to flood creators' schedules with sponsored videos, which crowds out everything else - is kind of buried in all the other content AND maybe not stated clearly enough. At least, that's how I saw it: That Adobe found an exploit where they could leverage the fact that creators have limited bandwidth to make tutorial videos, therefore every video a creator makes that's promoting an Adobe video is a video they're NOT making about a competitor's product. Not a fan of the "and now I'm gonna kill your family!" joke at the beginning. But I'm a geriatric by youtuber standards (40) and I have kids so maybe I'm an outlier here... but I also think that your videos do such a good job of being compelling enough to cross into the mainstream that it's worth cutting a few excessively aggressive jokes. But that's just me, grain of salt, etc. I do want to note that I actually learned programming on the job with Actionscript 3, which is one of the best-designed C-style programming languages I've ever used (beaten only by Swift). There's a cruel irony that Adobe got AS3 so right that they were able to build an enterprise-level application UI framework with Flash (called Flex), and that's probably what the train program used, but it hit its peak right before the iPhone came out and Steve Jobs basically said "fuck you Flash" and led to Adobe killing it. (Actually, IMO Apple's refusal to allow Flash on the iPhone was one of the most important reasons Adobe didn't end up supporting it in the long term, that's probably worth mentioning in the video!) As a developer at that time, my professional opinion was always that what Adobe SHOULD have done was committed to a long-term Flash runtime split that deprecated a lot of the legacy code and features that tended to have security holes into one branch, and then brought the modern stuff forward in another. Basically - ship two runtimes with the plugin, one Legacy (for backwards-compatibility), and one Modern. Steve Job's stated reason for Flash not being allowed on the iPhone was it's bloat and inefficiency, but if Adobe had created a modern, lighter runtime for mobile devices and allowed developers to upgrade and re-export their games and animations with a newer version, they probably could have changed the course of the web, gaming, mobile development, etc. But for reasons I don't understand (and I've never had a chance to ask anyone who was at Adobe at the time, even though I live in the Bay Area), they decided to just give up on the whole thing, which seems like an insane business move when you have that kind of install base and can lock people into your development tools.

Za

I love seeing the rough draft of a video! As someone who's much more literary focused, I've never been able to really picture what it would be like. This was really fun and I truly feel seen and appreciated. Also, while you're in the states, swing by a Ren Faire if you can! They're honestly one of the best things this country has to offer. Though I have a feeling you'll be way too busy for that. Stay safe, please!!

Levi Kessler

You better have put a joke about polyamoury in reference to the Adobe partners into the final script! If you haven't yet, feel free to steal the idea from me lol

Levi Kessler

Maybe something like referring to a creator becoming an Adobe partner as "joining the Adobe polycule" but I'm sure you'll find something funny but respectful, I trust you

Soviet Worm Bot

love the video, can't wait for the rest!! I hope there is a section covering Lenin's theory of Monopoly Capitalism (Imperialism, the highest form of capitalism) ;)

Zofia Gibbins

Great video so far! Glad you were both not seriously harmed in the crashed. All the best xxx

As someone who *Somehow* escaped paying the cancellation fee on Adobe CC after i accidentally let it lapse past the deadline (not cancelling it was apparently proof enough that I wanted to continue to pay for another year) I feel much of this video was made for me.

Herr Frodo Brömmelkamp

That cooking show was probably Lafer, Lichter, Lecker. Lafer was his colleague and Lecker translates to "tasty". Much fun was poked at their overly friendly and jovial attitude towards each other!

i think there was supposed to be `/s` somewhere in there ;D

What I wish for this christmas is that this video hits harder than the plagiarism one and it is the "straw that breaks ..." Adobe's back... 🤞🏻 ...I know it's unrealistic but you know a guy can have a dream :D all in all - video awesome, keep up the good work, will be happy with any (or none) updates, love all the work you are doing. ...and Thank you from the depths of my heart. You are doing the work that the lot of us can't and it means _plethora_ to us.

2026-09-05 04:00 I have unfortunate news - you have another topic you need to cover. You need to look into Scaleform - a games industry middleware. I promise as soon as you give it a quick google it will be obvious how relevant this is to the core of the essay.

Figuring out how to switch from Adobe Photoshop to something else was a NIGHTMARE. I'm convinced they give universities & students cheap access for the same reason Apple donated all those laptops for kids to learn typing on- trying to get people locked into one platform/brand. This video is 1000% my jam and I'm excited to see more! (Ultimately moved to Affinity, a one time purchase w/ mimics of PS, Illustrator, and InDesign. It's great but not perfect, but when I get frustrated about minor discrepancies in features I just remember I'm not paying $50/mo for the privilege of my program crashing every 3 hours and cheer right up lol.)

Katherine Moore

I am so fucking stoked for these goddamn puppets my dude. Like holy shit.

Tom Clark

Is this (the final draft of this, I mean) a public video? I've been supporting you for over a year and I'd like to see my name in the credits for the first time. Sorry that's not me griping, just a description of the facts

DestructoDee

I hope both of you are doing okay after the accidents. Not just physically, but mentally as well. That shit can stick with you. That aside, I love the draft and am so excited to see the finished product once it's good and ready. Take care, you two! And the puppets are AMAZING! <3

terrorist hamster

one, thank you so much for this preview. it's GOOD. i think some tangential references are fine (like the chinese train) but also, you'll need a SAFEWORD to get out of the stunlock. otherwise we'll end up with another tommy tallarico situation. by the way, did you know a second tommy tallarico has just hit the political commentary sphere? it's mutahar!

terrorist hamster

quick question: what's your membership? i'm at the only one i can afford ($2), and it doesn't include being credited in videos (and i'm fine with that, $2 starts adding up over time anyway). if you're donating $5 or $10, surely you will. it comes with the package.

jb

i did also assume it was a tom scott dig, for what it’s worth!

So excited to see a video about a problem that has actively fucked up my life this year! I think though it does need some more explaining for people who aren’t familiar with adobe or software subscriptions how ridiculous these prices have gotten. When I was a kid you could buy the Microsoft suite once, for all the computers in your house, forever. When I was in school and uni, the software was paid by the schools. Now I need to pay an expensive yearly subscription for my job (that costs 109 AUD, more if I want their bullshit AI). This year I received a grant for an arts project and part of the costs covered was a full Adobe suite subscription. Except when I finally received the grant money, the cost of Adobe had risen by a hundred dollars after just two months, and has since risen even higher. So what did I do? I couldn’t afford to get Adobe (and hate their AI bullshit, and my shitty little laptop would have struggled to even fit the programs in it, let alone run their bloated software well), so I had to use open source software, and research and learn about all these programs I had never used before, and spent the money on other costs. In the long term it worked out better for the project, but it created a lot more work for me. I feel really lucky that the providers of this grant were okay with me using the grant money for others costs, because otherwise I would have been forced to buy the subscription and pay the excess cost out of pocket, which I obviously couldn’t afford because I needed the grant in the first place. Keep up the good work and stay safe!

Ash Nyx

Adobe: destroyer of wallets, patience, and workable tools. As soon as I was finished with college I dumped as much Adobe as I could because of their persistently predatory marketing and general enshittification you mention in this part. Very excited for this!!!

Kristina Foster

I'm looking, what would you say are the benefits and the drawbacks?

Kit Weldon

I want to say, in the same way you frequently talk about people who’ve inspired you to create, I’ve found your enthusiasm for creativity to be inspiring myself. I’ve always felt I wanted to make things, but never felt like I was a creative person myself, or that I had anything interesting or original to say. I think I need to stop listening to those feelings. I’m going to make a (likely very bad) video about Elden Ring, and I thank you for inspiring me to be willing to unleash something to the world. I will indeed watch a very long video about anything you want, including software!

Laurel Nelson

OH MY GOD the low budget big sponsor videos!! I watched a few videos from a renter friendly interior decorating channel whose style I liked, hoping to learn a thing or two that would help me keep my sanity in a bland college dorm and then in a marketable beige apartment. In addition to the fact that their landlord seemed to be WAY more accessible and accommodating than mine, she got SO MUCH free furniture, new from sponsors!! If I could afford that furniture, I would simply buy a house

Skallagrim

Wow, so much has happened... Well, it's been a hot minute too. ;) That Adobe video is going to be massive, eh? Wonder if they'll ever recover from that... and they better not! Such a scumbag company. Cartoon villains are nicer. Anyway, looking forward to it! I'll resist the temptation to peek at the preview for now, will keep waiting for the full release. Thanks for the update though.

ThatFlyingScotsman

I cannot imagine how genuinely terrifying it would be to be advised by a lawyer not to use an aeroplane unless you're leaving. I hope you manage to escape back to...well I won't call it "civilisation" per se, but Starmer hasn't started the British Gestapo raids yet.

Moritz Musings

Go for it! Once you upload it, I’d love to see it!

Rach

I feel like you could find&replace all instances of "Adobe" to "Autodesk" in the acquisitions of similar competitors section and it would still make sense. Such a common and awful business model 🥲

Quitpayload

I'm delighted to see an update, but I also have a problem. I'm not trying to be an asshole, but I have some unavoidably mean things to say, so here it goes. You haven't updated in eight months and I don't think that this update is good enough. One of the reasons why I'm subscribed to your patreon is so that I can get information on the state of your projects, and to date I and other patrons are only slightly less in the dark as to what's going on as the rest of the internet, and I genuinely think that you should apologise the lack of updates. I can see from reading this that the lack of updates isn't from the lack of any news about your next video. Plenty of stuff has been happening, so why didn't you talk about it earlier? Why didn't you announce months ago that you were going to be filming in America? Why not post a simple statement months ago like: "Hey everybody, sorry about the lack of updates. We're planning to shoot in America and getting a work visa is proving to be complicated and time consuming process."? Like, I was watching your interview with JacksFilms and you talked about how you're working on a bunch of videos at the same time, so that you can release a bunch of videos in quick succession and hopefully avoid another massive time gap between videos. Like, is that not a thing to mention on Patreon? On the fact that you're shooting in America, could you not have mentioned that at some point in the last eight months? I'm going to do something that might be foolish, and preemptively respond to a comment I suspect someone might make. "If you have a problem with the way he runs the Patreon then drop your support." To anyone who might suggest this, my own personal dislike isn't really the point I'm trying to make. My point is that I think that this is a shitty way to treat the people who support you, and me dropping my support isn't going to change that. In your plagarism video there is an entire section where you criticise James Somerton for taking money from his fans, and then spending months being opaque about what he's doing. You then spend a year and eight months being opaque about whats going on behind the scenes. I know that this comparison is not one to one. Unlike James you actually have a history of creating high quality content, and the information you have provided is pretty reasonable, such as the task of tracking down all of the people James stole from. I also know how busy you've been, both with stuff related to youtube produciton, and stuff generally not part of the production process, like tracking down the dozens, or possibly hundreds of people James Somerton fucked over. I also found your reasons for the delays to make much more sense than the reasons James made. But still, it's been eight and a half months since your last update, and I think you should at least apologise for this silence. The second thing that bothers me is your attitude towards your output. There are a few moments throughout your videos where you seem to show frustration at yourself for your slowness to make videos, but from my perspective what I see much more often is you joking about your output in a way that I think is insulting, to both your audience and your patrons. I've read over this next part, and I don't know if I'm making my point clear, so I'll try to sum up what my problem is: You are clearly aware of your own infrequent upload schedule, and I have seen you express frustration for this, but more often I see you joke about it, in ways that seem like you don't really take this problem very seriously. The more I see you joke about it, the more it seems to me like you're using self awareness and self deprication as ways to shield yourself from potential criticism. Let me try and put it another way, in your most recent public video, Plagarism and You(Tube), one of the final things you say is this: "I have good videos coming that I've also been working on. Those are happening as well, I didn't just make this for ten months, I promise." In the time since you posted that video and that statement, a year and 8 months, you have released publically: Nothing On Patreon you've released: A Behind The Scenes video on building your set A video essay about Newgrounds A second, much shorter follow up to that essay Two unscripted videos where you taste test Oreo products. I don't like how infrequently you upload, but that on it's own isn't the issue. I was rewatching the plagarism video, and at the end you thank your patrons and acknowledge that they make what you do possible. And in this preview video you acknowledge that you're in a unique position as a youtuber where you don't need to take sponsorships in order to make ends meet. It seems like you are aware of, and grateful for your position. To me, your words say one thing, but your actions say another. On this most recent update, the one where I think you should have apologised for your lack of updates, you said the phrase "Let me explain in more detail, so you feel sympathy for us", in what feels like a joking, non serious way. I'm a fan of Miniminuteman, and so on his most recent video I read the comment you made, where you jokingly suggest that it's his fault, not yours, if the next video isn't out before the end of August. A few months ago you retweeted a tweet that said this: "Hbomberguy will do anything but drop videos and honestly i respect him" I found this one to be particularly insulting, as when that tweet had been made it had been over a year since your last public upload and amost three months since your last patreon update. You say that you appreciate your Patrons, and then keep them in the dark for months on end as to what is going on. You express frustration at your own output of videos, but more often I see you joking about it in a way that says to me that you don't really see it as a problem. I want to make it clear that I'm not trying to call you out just for not uploading in ages. I don't like how infrequently you upload, but I also understand that it's not really possible for you to upload more without sacrificing the quality of your videos. What I want is for you to be more transparent and to stop treating this problem of your upload schedule like its funny. You implied in your most recent public video that you were going to upload more often, and then didn't upload anything publically for what is now approaching two years. I think that you fucked up here, and that's not a crime or anything, but I think that you should apologise for fucking up and try not to repeat this in the future. Thanks.

Cora

I am so stoked about this video coming out (also looking forward to the open source one). I think the draft is great, and disagree with the people saying the sponsorship bit drags out for too long but I am also exactly the type of person who thinks that stuff is funnier the longer it is so maybe don't take my personal brand of weirdness as a good recommendation. The hat for dogs bit murdered me and I hope you keep that in the final shoot! Now for the more serious bit of my comment: I am so so glad you and Kat are okay after the accidents and hope you take care of your mental health in this regard as well. Also in regards to the being in the USA situation because holy fuck that sounds very scary. I do want to add my two cents about the update infrequency. I am going to echo another person's comment, though I am feeling a lot less frustration about it than that person because I have loved your content for so long that the giant soft spot in my heart will probably never run out of patience and understanding. And, don't get me wrong, I do understand why things are the way they are. But I do wish we could have more frequent updates - yes, even just text updates. You are saying that that will be case in this post but you have said that before and it then did not really happen. I empathize deeply with the feeling of wanting to have something to show for an update but, dude, we are literally here because we want to have some insight into how things are going. A few lines once a month that tell us "woops, visa to the US is ruining my life", "fucking hell, we got into TWO car accidents", "I fell into a research hole about xzy, sorry folks" would be infinitely better than months and months of silence. Much like the other person who commented, this isn't me saying I am going to stop supporting you - quite the opposite actually. And I am also not going to critique you on how long it takes you to make the videos because the quality speaks for itself. Neither am I going to be upset at how you cope with the clear frustration you feel about your lack of a schedule because the coping through humor thing is one of the many, many sides of your content that I deeply enjoy. But I do think you need to get over the perfectionism when it comes to simple patreon updates. Just shoot us a quick text, and most of us would be absolutely happy. At least I'd be. That being said, I can't wait for the video to be out and hopefully all the other content you've been working on. Take good care and please avoid car accidents and getting arrested by the gestapo if you can. Sending lots of love!

32:17 Premiere -Pro- may be an Adobe product but the OG Premiere was based on a SuperMac editor they acquired iirc

Brooklyn Borgelt

Dude, if you can’t afford $2 a month just say that

Moritz Musings

I have my thoughts on their comment but that is just mean and beneath you. Do not ever imply someone’s wealth being an obstacle is a bad thing. You don’t know them and their points where quite well formulated. This is insulting and I hope you reconsider writing it.

Theo

This is needlessly mean tbh. It is coming across as extremely entitled -- he did apologize, he did explain things, and if that is not enough for you, just cancel your membership. There is no need to be this scathing, honestly.

Aeglafaris

I think people who are financially supporting someone who frequently talks about how important his supporters are have a right to express frustration for being kept in the dark despite promises not to do that. I also think Harry is an entire adult capable of handling honesty and criticism. Dismissal of all criticism and just throwing out "if you don't like it just cancel your membership" is such an unhealthy way of looking at things because it gainsays the idea that creators should ever held accountable. I don't fully agree with the comment either, but it's important that people who feel the way they do also be able to express that to people who supposedly appreciate them and their support so much.

Quitpayload

Replying to Axton Monet "This is needlessly mean" I agree that my previous post was mean. I don't agree that it was needlessly mean. I was clear as to what my problems were. When I compared some of his behaviours to James Somertons, I was clear that I don't think that he's even remotely as bad as James, just that there were instances of him engaging in behaviour similar to that of James. "It is coming across as extremely entitled" I agree, it is entitled. I'm literally supporting Hbomb financially, so I think that I am entitled to at least express my displeasure at behaviour from him that I think is problematic. "he did apologize, he did explain things" He apologised for the delay in a new video, not for the eight months of silence on Patreon, but while we're there, I don't think that the apology that he made was very good. In his previous public video he implied that he was going to be releasing videos more frequently. That was close to two years ago, and he had not released a new video to his main channel. I don't think that "Sorry about that" is good enough either. As for him explaining things, yes, he did explain things, that's not my problem. My problem is that he waited the better part of a year to explain things instead of explain them months ago. There's really no good reason not to have announced months ago that he was travelling to America to film there. I stand by my statement that he should apologise for the silence on Patreon and try to do better. "if that is not enough for you, just cancel your membership." I was worried when I posted that pre emptive response that I would come across as paranoid or something, I guess I was right to post it, as you seem to have ignored it, so I'm just going to copy and paste that section here: My own personal dislike isn't really the point I'm trying to make. My point is that I think that this is a shitty way to treat the people who support you, and me dropping my support isn't going to change that. "There is no need to be this scathing, honestly." I was as polite as I was trying to be in my comment. I don't see how I could have made it less scathing other than not making the comment. As I said, I'm not trying to be an asshole, but I don't know how to criticise someone without coming across as mean.

Hbomb

Thanks for taking the time to write your feelings on this in such detail. I really do wish I'd kept people more abreast of what was happening, but two main things kept me from doing so. Firstly, from talking to a lawyer during the visa process, I was advised to not publicly talk about it in case it messed with the process. The government official who checks your social media can have some thoughts about you publicly announcing your plans to enter the country. I really wanted to at least say 'I'm trying to get a visa to do this thing' but I would have been going against both the advice of my lawyer and the wishes of Kat, who is far more of an opsec expert than I will ever be. It might have seemed simple to you and me, but I didn't have it in me to say 'my lawyer and producer are both wrong.' Secondly, I've had this internal notion that my updates should have something big to show, like a new bonus video or a big chunk of the next regular one as a preview. So I kept taking more time to work on the video instead of just updating people like I should have done in the first place. I realise from your post that you (and others who have concurred) would enjoy more frequent updates about how specific things are going, instead of waiting for ages without knowing what was coming or what I was up to. One of the replies called you entitled, but you genuinely ARE entitled to know what I'm up to, and I'm sorry for mishandling this period. I think I needed someone to say they weren't happy about it. Your comment has helped remind me how I should be talking to my audience, so thank you again for writing it, and in case I didn't say it before, I'm sorry for taking as long as I did to figure this out. I really do regret it. The guilt of not having updated people in so long really got to me by the end and I don't want to do that to you, or me, again.

Hbomb

There's quite a bit of Autodesk in here actually!

Hbomb

Yeah and I think Adobe acquired the original Premiere when it was in a super nascent state? For the sake of that segment I figured I'd give them the point.

Hbomb

Thanks for voicing your feelings about this, and for being so nice about my failure to keep you informed. I was a little afraid talking about them would feel like I was making excuses. Like, if my next update after several months wasn't new material, and instead an excuse why there wasn't any, I'd feel like I failed you. In my head, it made sense to take a bit longer, get the draft done, then post it along with the explanation for its lateness. In retrospect it was silly to think that. The next time something horrible happens to Kat's car you'll be the first to know.

Kat

Yesssss

Kat

They feel like my children at this point

This is a great opener to the video! Looking forward to seeing where it’ll go! As a fellow Premiere Pro user I can’t tell you the amount of times a feature I used frequently just up and vanished. In many cases, the changes Adobe makes to Premiere end up doing the opposite of “streamlining” the program. There used to be a nifty tool called “change to color” which allowed you select a certain color and within your clip and adjust it to a different hue. It was as easy to use as a tool gets, but they took it out in favor of a more complicated, less functional version that’s part of the Lumetri color panel. They love moving things around so that it’s all in the same place, but that doesn’t actually make editing easier or more user friendly. What’s wrong with having more simple tools for beginner editors? Lumetri color is also infamous for being prone to crashes as it’s built upon outdated tech, completely unable to compete with Da Vinci’s lossless color correction. And unless they rebuild everything from scratch, they’re stuck with it. Anyways, love what I saw so far. Looking forward to the finished product!

Props It Yourself

ACTIONSCRIPT WAS GREAT FUCK YOU ADOBE On a side note, the first 10 minutes already have me laughing my ass off and missing the old days of programming random fun stuff, amazing job i can't wait to see the rest !

Lee Rogers

You're a far braver man than I, going to the US at the moment. Best of luck.

Sarah Dowdall

I'm so unbelievably hype for Puppets ! Also I've always wanted to ask, who edits your videos ? I've never noticed anyone credited , are they ghost edited or do y'all do it ? I know the last one it was Hbomb , but ... I guess I'm asking why ? If that's still the case for this one (if its not too rude to ask , I'm just a nosy editor)

Sierra Clibourne

So nice meeting you at open sauce! I was mostly there for my husband and you were an awesome surprise once the set list was released. Sorry you're stuck in america and can't even tweet mean things, wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy ALSO, Kat I cannot emphasize enough that if you have one at all available in the used market near you, a 2018-2021 honda civic hatchback is the perfect car. I just got one last year and it's literally the best car i've ever had. It can haul tons of stuff with the seat folded down but is still a small car, it's good on gas mileage, it's a honda so it's not crazy expensive to buy OR to maintain and it's very repairable, it has a really good mix of carplay-available screen and physical buttons, it's an incredibly good looking car, and the center console has this like modular rail system so you can buy inserts for it and customize like what size and shape of cupholders you have and if you want any other storage bin shapes instead. I just had a friend move to the UK and they literally chose to import their car instead of sell it because they also have a hatchback honda civic from the same year range. The newer ones are not as sexy and that's a vital and necessary need so that's why I'm specifying the year. The hatchback is also a very important part to mention here, the non-hatchback is the same size but uglier and hauls less with no real upside and i'm not even quite sure why people get them over the hatchback option Seriously, every time I go to the dealership they ask me if I'm looking to sell the car because it's so popular in the used market. A perfect commuting car, a perfect road trip car, a perfect car for me to haul home random facebook marketplace hauls and costco trips but also way smaller than most other cars on the road. A perfect car in every way. Cannot recommend enough.

Kat

It’s all him baybeeeee

Kat

A lot of agencies and other YouTubers keep trying to convince Hbomb to hire editors but it’s just not the same for his style of/approach to videos. The execution and timing of humor, feeling out and rewriting the script, his is not a one way workflow like it is with (probably) most YouTubers. I think it’s also where he derives a lot of personal joy and expression of creativity, so handing that off to someone doesn’t make a lot of sense that way either. This is absolutely one reason the videos take time to make. Anybody can hire external editors for “more efficiency and output” but imo that’s an unnervingly capitalist instinct to fall into and its a pretty significant trade-off creatively! Edit: That said, if you can work with editors in a way that doesn’t compromise your vision so you can maintain better work-life balance (especially if you’re on sponsor deadlines), I definitely recommend it!

Kat

What about when something horrible happens to my ANKLE?? Edit: Also to the OP, thanks for the feedback and put so nicely! You are spot on about getting over that perfectionism for sure lmao. I keep showing Harry other peoples’ patreon content to basically drive home that people want the more casual content that he wouldn’t normally show to the public! Harry these people love your work and they love what’s going on in your head!!

Evan Mullin

This is awesome and easily follow-able, even for a technologically illiterate Luddite like myself. And what you said about kids looking into tutorials and being discouraged because of the price of the products advertised is spot on, though fully present in adults-myself included. It’s almost a hyper-reality situation.

C

fuck that hit-and-run driver. Were they caught? Hope you both are doing ok physically and mentally. That's really scary and can stay with you for awhile.

HatMallow

i just got this patreon membership a couple days ago just to watch the bonus content, then probably unsubribe since hbomb has so many backers. but simply after reading the title of this video, I realized this man is doing god's work and I want to financially support him. can't wait for the full cut!

Lars

Text updates would be A-OK with me! I understand there’s not always an exciting update, and there are things you can’t tell us in the moment, but aside from that it’s great just to know things are in progress!

Kat

AWWWWW YOU We’ll try to make it worth your while

Kat

Filed a report but chances are low :(

HatMallow

and thank you for all your efforts behind the scenes. those puppets look adorable:)

Hbomb: "Part 2: Acquisitions Incorporated" Me: 👀👀👀👀👀

Sarah Dowdall

Ah thank your for the reply ! Honestly that output while writing and directing is crazy to me, so much work with no feedback loop would drive me bonkers, thank goodness he has you Kat. Incredible work from such a tiny team my hat off to y'all. I can totally see what you mean with the creativity and joy, I'd never give up editing for any other part of the process its where the magic happens after all. Love that your not going with a editor for the sake of efficiency, If I were advising any essayist I'd say they would need to look for a editor for feedback and collab first over their speed, as like you said the capitalistic instinct just isn't it in this space. Also screw agencies on principal. Thank your for answering , I love hearing how the sausage is made. Looking forward to seeing puppets ! and I hope your recovering well from the vehicles assassination attempts, -Sarah

Francis Siberini

Oh also, as per your bit about the softwares all being made by different people. You're so right and it's infuriating. If for eg you write a new title in Premiere, you can press Escape to confirm the text layer/graphic once you've written it. However in After Effects if you do the same thing - new text layer, write what you want... if you press Escape, it acts as a cancel button and reverts or removes everything you just did!!!!????? It's so frustrating lol. I've always wondered why their functions wouldn't act in harmony across all platforms, now I know why.

Matthew Dickman

Final test? I have fallen asleep listening to you put the world to rights since I discovered this glorious channel so I have no doubt ill watch this dozens of times

Leninade

Ah, the video looks great! Really looking foreward to it! Also god, condolances on the crashes. Acquisitions incorperated. Hehehehehehehe. Also is the puppet Doc Holliday?

Stephi Anne-with-an-E

Super excited for this! Also, idk to what extent the "this video is about software" line was supposed to be a joke, but I really think the vast majority of people will find this extremely relatable and relevant. "I don't feel like a customer, I feel like a hostage" rewired my brain with how succinctly it describes exactly what I (and probably most people) are feeling.

Kat

Lmao I didn’t even think about the idea you would see this, surprise!!

Dor Oh.

Hey Hbomberguy, I hope you get to read this. First, sorry for any spelling mistakes - English is my second language and ChatGPT isn’t helping much. Second, I really love your content - like, really. I honestly think you’re one of the most intellectual YouTubers making documentaries and video essays right now. I even signed up for your Patreon after I finished watching your video about plagiarism and YouTube. It was so good that I think I’ve watched it 3–4 times by now. That’s why it’s so heartbreaking to hear your comments about Israel. I am Israeli, and proudly so. I love my people and my country, and to hear you call Israeli companies like SodaStream participants in war crimes feels both awful and misleading. To be clear - many people like me don’t want to be at war with anyone. Many of us oppose our government for being too conservative and unethical. Many of us acknowledge the suffering of the Palestinian people and oppose any unjustified deaths. Look, I don’t really give a shit about some company that makes sparkling water, but what I do know is that many Israeli companies, including SodaStream, have employed (or at least used to employ, before the October 7th massacre) Palestinians from the West Bank and Gaza. I hope you’ll try to understand the point I’m trying to make in this comment, and maybe it can start a helpful discussion - one that doesn’t involve calling for the eradication of my country, but instead searches for a real solution for everyone. Wishing you the best of luck on your next project!

TitaniumTeddyBear

In response to the guy above who is defending Israel's genocide: Israel has a right to defend itself. It does not have a right to defend itself by using genocide. Either Israel gives Gaza back to the Palestinians or Israel conducted genocide in order to steal land. There is no 3rd option. And given Netanyahu's most recent actions we all know which one it is :(

Hbomb

I considered it and thought it would be funny

Quitpayload

Thanks a lot for responding. I honestly wasn't actually expecting a direct response from you. I appreciate the apology, but, not to kick a gift horse on the mouth, I think that you should make a public post apologising to all patrons not just me. I don't think it has to be anything fancy, but at least a public acknowledgement would be the right thing to do IMO. Also, I should acknowledge that I said that there's no good reason not to announce the America trip months earlier, but in retrospect, "my lawyer advised me not to tell anybody" actually is a good reason IMO. I still think that you should have updated way earlier, but I get not telling anyone about the America stuff. One other thing since I have your attention. I left you a private message a few months ago. You never responded, and I just wanted to say that I think that what I said in it is important. Just to be clear, I'm not criticising you for not responding. I know you have more than 20,000 Patrons, so you probably have a huge backlog of PMs. I'm only saying this because I don't know of I'll be in a position like this to tell you again. So there. Thanks. Also fuck Adobe.

cstefanile

Watched this like 48 times already.

Hbomb

Whoa! Any notes lol

Coestar

yea, "some tech" ...just AI for targeting and killing Palestinians, no biggie

Coestar

Love the new video so far! James Lee recently made a great video in the "fuck Adobe" genre and I really loved how he dove into open source alternatives and Linux: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lm51xZHZI6g Have you been exploring any such alternatives yourself? I think it would be great to weave that into this video, if so.

GeraSun

As a creative just starting my first own business I feel this. Not just Adobe - everybody wants to sell me a subscription to some service leaving me either building my own solution (haha) or to always depend on them.

Silver Birch Bitch

holy shit, I'm glad you and Kat are ok, but what a mess! I am deeply DEEPLY sorry for the shithole that is my country of residence.

Elsie Hupp

You don’t seem to be familiar with the chronology here. Natalie Wynn didn’t say anything at all about Gaza until a commentary YouTuber, The Kavernacle (I don’t know his personal name), made a video calling attention to her silence, at which point I assume a bunch of people contacted Natalie Wynn demanding g that she issue a public statement, and within a day or two she posted an incoherent Notes-app statement explaining that she hadn’t said anything because she hadn’t felt she had any opinion worth saying. You seem to think that Natalie Wynn posted her incoherent ramblings apropos of nothing. It is, in my opinion entirely morally consistent not to weigh in on every current event. You know who weighs in on every current event? Commentary YouTubers like The Kavernacle. The fact that people like you judge Natalie Wynn for posting an incoherent response to (one assumes) Twitter bullying suggests that Natalie Wynn’s silence up until that point was, in fact, morally superior to Natalie Wynn sharing her incoherent ramblings. The point you seem unwilling to accept is that demanding articulate opinions from people more or less at random is why people post incoherent opinions online in the first place. My only real critique of Natalie Wynn is that she probably shouldn’t be on Twitter, because Natalie Wynn using Twitter makes people like you more prone towards developing parasocial relationships with her. Natalie Wynn does not have a personal relationship with anyone in this comment thread. Natalie Wynn is not actually all that important of a person. Natalie Wynn is just some lady in Baltimore who occasionally livestreams The Sims 2 and even more rarely dresses up in costumes and talks about Friedrich Nietzsche. Why should you care what she thinks about [insert topic here]?

Elsie Hupp

Gracey—yes, exactly. The entire “political commentary” content economy has inherently perverse incentives, and people like Natalie Wynn or Harry Brewis posting a three-hour-long scripted video once a year rather than posting a hot take like clockwork every week (or even more frequently than that) is almost certainly a good thing actually.

Elsie Hupp

If you’re curious, my response is weird because it is a structural critique rather than a personal one. That is, my response to critiques of Natalie Wynn for not being a Key Opinion Leader is that expecting *anyone* to be a Key Opinion Leader is a byproduct of the Late Capitalist content economy, and that opting out of parts of that economy (for instance, by developing a Patreon base and not chasing the YouTube Algorithm) is morally defensible. The problem here is YouTube (and the Late Capitalist content economy writ large); the problem here is *not* individual people posting videos on YouTube. If a YouTuber has staff, though, then, yes, the labor conditions of the YouTube channel are salient beyond the conditions of YouTube itself. Notably, the last time Natalie Wynn got big-time canceled, in 2019, it was for hiring a voice actor without doing a full background check on him first, and since then she has made a point of working almost entirely by herself. (The main exception I can think of is that IIRC Natalie Wynn still features commissioned music by Zöe Blade, but also AFAIK no one has canceled Zöe Blade, so it hasn’t blown back on Natalie Wynn, yet.) So my response is weird because I am not actually defending Natalie Wynn so much as arguing that Natalie Wynn’s behavior in this instance really doesn’t matter. (If you’re particularly morbid in your curiosity, I got the general shape of this critique back in 2019 from the book “Custom Reality and You” by the thoroughly cursed YouTuber Peter Coffin—yes, the guy with the fake girlfriend who kicked himself in the dick—and Peter Coffin was mostly just applying Guy Debord’s “The Society of the Spectacle” to contemporary social media. And since we’re already down this rabbit hole, my opinion on Peter Coffin’s subsequent career is that “Custom Reality and You” almost perfectly predicted how Peter Coffin would continue to melt his own brain. So my summary of the book is “how not to become Peter Coffin”. Still you’d probably be better served just by reading Guy Debord.)

Considering that the things Israel is defending itself from are the consequences of its own colonialist ideology and actions, I think that nothing Israel does could be considered defensive. The states very existence in its current form is an act of aggression

SimmyWuff

It's not part of their Creative Suite so it doesn't often get talked about, but I'm curious about Adobe Captivate - it's an authoring tool for e-learning stuff akin to Storyline and Rise (both made by Articulate), and it's a sort of weird presence in the instructional design world cuz it's not choking the life out of other programs, but it still has that weird adobe stench wafting from it (obtuse user interface, feature bloat, obscene price tag). I haven't looked into it myself, but you mentioning all the acquisitions made me wonder whether that happened with Captivate as well.

RedPandaKT

Just this first 35 minute segment has me more pissed off at Adobe than ever, but the filmmaking tutorial part was so interesting that it brought back a little of the desire I had as a kid to try and make my own movies. I might look into some non-Adobe editing software and also possibly redownload Blender and actually learn how it works this time

Extrabelasting

I‘d say an apology is not necessary imo, especially not a public one. I REALLY don’t want half assed posts just for the sake of consistency. But I’ll agree, the „Don’t worry ppl I’m not dead 🤭“-type jokes are wearing a little bit thin. (I’m excluding the „in this years therapy session masqueraded as an essay“ jokes)

"hey, openly leftist creator, it's heartbreaking to hear you say you don't think sponsorships connected to an ongoing genocide are moral" aah comment. Gold plated victim card holder. Free Palestine.

FriendlyBrews

The cringiest thing is that they posted that comment with the usual ziovictim 4d chess strategy, as if most of the people sponsoring this Patreon aren't aligned with Palestine and haven't heard this shit one thousand times already.

FriendlyBrews

Father is back! Father has posted! And it's not a delectable voyage to discover all my favorite Oreo products, boys! I'm gonna watch this too many times, I already know it...

Alex K

you joke about watching a video about software not appealing to your audience, but i'm best known on tumblr and reddit for a comment i made regarding just how much biomed research is critically dependent on abandonware from companies that don't care or no longer exist, so i think this might be popular in this crowd.

Serious Sergal

I've already watched this straight through twice and love it to bits. Can't wait for the full video or even the first hour. Will likely watch that twice as well!!!

Haze Peers

Absolutely seconded. It's what I used after a BUNCH of research trying to avoid Adobe when I was really broke a few years ago. Excellent software.

Alice Alysia

That said, it's still closed source and proprietary, so yet again they can take your tools away. Kdenlive occupies a similar space to gimp, it's powerful but confusing and requires more effort to complete basic tasks. Shotcut seems a touch more user friendly but I haven't used it so I can't say for sure. Pitivi looks fantastic, but is linux exclusive, so you probably want to try it via wsl or a vm before jumping over to it. There's also a fair few after effects alternatives like natron, and for more complex projects, you're gonna use blender.

ac1d_TigR

Ikr i had to skip past it 😆

Katherine Moore

I showed this to my wife who edits videos and hates adobe. She said it was good. Well done, lads.

Susanne

1. This is already great and super exciting to me personally - I've been wanting to burn everything down since they went to subscription only, the swine. 2. Would you consider shortening the partnering with... section? I feel like it's a taaaad too long. 3. I want to say that puppet looks like Jamie but that might be bias because you mentioned Adam. :D 4. I'm glad you're both okay!

wyldweaverandwyrm

Anyone else remember the planned Northrup Grumman/Marvel comic?

Junileaf

Open Source video, makes sense as adobe has been a big roadblock to linux adoption - so software devs are playing catch-up to replace adobe products. Da Vinci Resolve does work on linux, inkscape is incredible, krita is too, and obviously blender. Photoshop is the next big one - and GIMP + PhotoGIMP is on the up-and-up imo

Kat

Please thank your wife for us

nekomusumeninaritai

I think the very fact that they were employing Palestinians is the issue (unless they've done something worse since the last time I looked into it). Because the Gaza are under blockade (even before 10/7), it's not really a free choice to work there. So criticism of these compnies is completely valid because the problem is they are taking advantage of colonialism to pay less than they would have to otherwise. It's a bit too myopic to say that “just because people choose to work there means that everything is okay” IMHO.

nekomusumeninaritai

I was trying to do a line break and accidently posted. I was not quite finished editing. 1. I wrote Gaza but should have written West Bank. 2. Wikipedia claims they closed the West Bank factory in 2015 (or maybe it is still open, but isn't their principal factory anymore). 3. I intended to make the point that boycotting or criticizing sponsorships is still reasonable. but Dor Oh brought up the employment issue, and I was responding to that. 4. Assuming good faith seems reasonable on Patreon, I don't think I'd have bothered explaining on YouTube.

Dor Oh.

I respect your opinions and agree that boycotting or criticizing sponsorships is reasonable if they are acting in bad faith for any reason - but my point is that i don't agree with the general consensus that Israel committing war crime because of our IMO justified war. I should be clear - its a very messy and awful situation and i really do not wish any harm for any innocent live no matter which side of the fence they live.

Dor Oh.

We cannot talk about the past, because every side has a valid point about who has the right to live in this land. Both Palestinians and Jews have a long history here. I don’t really care about the land itself - I care about the people living here. I would like to see a two-state solution, which most Israelis supported before the October 7th massacre. I do not believe that Israel is committing genocide. I do believe that this war has gone on for too long and that too many innocent civilians have died (regardless of the source of the numbers). I would gladly give parts of our land for peace, and Israel did that many times before and tried to do that with the Palestinians, But the Palestinians and their leaders do not want to live beside us - they want to deport us. Deport us where? Nobody can say. I am an Arab Jew. My father was born in Morocco. Morocco is not my home - Israel is, and (like the Palestinians) I'm not going anywhere. btw, to be clear - I do not want to deport any Palestinians. I want a Palestinian country to live peacefully beside Israel. At this point, neither side is going anywhere.

Safa

that was so good, i can just tell that i'll watch the video on repeat endlessly when it comes out lmao

MK

I would strongly suggest you to do some reading on the human rights situation of the palestinian workers before jumping here trying to defend israeli companies. "i really do not wish any harm for any innocent live no matter which side of the fence they live." One of the main issues here is the fence you mention, which is constantly expanded, denying palestinians freedom of movement, access to food and water, basic human rights. Also, its not "justified war", its ongoing genocide.

tagliatelle grande

The Patreon call out hit me like a jump scare 😂 So pumped to see the rest, glad y’all are mostly ok after such a rough time in the US

nekomusumeninaritai

@FriendlyAnarchist Looks like you had the correct read. Sorry.

nekomusumeninaritai

1. If “Reagan's friend” (rot13 for spoilers) Eboreg Obex, then it is a bit obvious (for me at least). I do very much hope you tell the story about why practically one of the only privacy laws the US has is for video rental stores.

nekomusumeninaritai

2. I think Adobe would just buy DaVinci Resolve if they were too much of a threat, but I'm just cynical about buying software in general. If antitrust were stronger, it might be fine.

nekomusumeninaritai

3. The part about Flash's flaws and the focus on how the problem with the “kill switch” being Adobe's power is excellent. I can't think of a way to improve this.

nekomusumeninaritai

4. The Todo bit about filming your Action Script book works even if you never get around to it IMHO.

nekomusumeninaritai

2.1 “cynical about buying” oops, I meant cynical about proprietary software

Onslow Bell

Excited for the video! I actually have not gotten into video stuff because I want to find an alternative to adobe. I think I have found some but it remains to be seen if I can properly utilize them. Currently I don’t have the money to do so. I remember Noodle’s video on making that short animated ad vividly whenever I think about getting into this stuff.

Dan M

You guys have a magic ability to engage my attention on a topic I have zero interest in. The script writing, editing, music, sound effects, lighting, it all works together well to grab my attention, and hopefully will do well on YT as well. The internet-historian vibe is so interesting.

John

He specifically mentions the best alternative I've found in this video. DaVinci Resolve. It's free unless you need the super high end tools and it does pretty much everything. It's just not super intuitive at all but very easy to find tutorials to do almost anything you want. If not on YouTube, then you can download videos directly from their website. I've been learning as I go on it but haven't done anything in a while.

Moritz Musings

It took me quite a while to understand the bit, you found out if it was a drone or if there is a building, right? Very excited for the „heavily telegraphed“ plot twists this time. I still haven’t recovered from „this video is about James Somerton“, I never expected that.

Kyle Baker

Was very excited to watch this, and it did not disappoint. Look forward to seeing more soon!

Maddie King

My husband and I both hate Adobe so we're excited for this! Thank you for touching on what a bad tutorial feels like, there's hardly anything more frustrating. I see your second puppet and raise you swedish chef and his catch phrase. Also- we would support a CA meetup! We're in the Bay area.

Charli Harvey

as someone who has just spent about one hundred years tearing my hair out troubleshooting a colour issue because of how completely opaque After Effects is about what is actually going on with its colour management, this is greatly appreciated.

Morgan Ashwin

pssspsssss Mr. Hbomberguy you have promised us puppet pictures psssspssss I don't care if there are any other updates show me the PLUSH

Tania

Those puppets are absolutely magnificent.

STICKEY MYX

this is a month old and i could save my anecdote to when the full video releases but i dipped my toe into the brief world of adobe and it scorned me still. for my final project of my senior year, I switched from canva to adobe express, one of i'm guessing adobe's many forgotten children. genuinely baffling how little they cared or designed it. i don't know if this is common and please don't report me to the police, but they didn't even have the mind to discontinue the free trial if you canceled early, which even discord nitro is smarter than. i have no idea who that product was marketed towards. everything had that pop zaniness of a corporate startup and had the mobility of a tricycle. it didn't necessarily stunt me in making my project, but it was built like if it collapsed tomorrow there'd be no sweat off their back whatsoever.

STICKEY MYX

this argument is less structured than i want because i've sat on it a few days—i am not a filmmaker or a video-based creator, I am a writer. and i thought about how writing doesn't necessarily have an adobe equivalent, technically you don't have to pay for anything. but then i realized i've never faced a paywall because i've used google docs. google docs has no competition because no other writing program has the liberties to make itself free. google docs is too easy to use to kill. i could and have found multiple google docs alternatives but most major ones have file limits or feature limits. their only competition is microsoft. you can properly migrate off of google docs, but your alternatives are your notepad app or paid services.

CurlzMT

I was gonna say, it’s funny at first but it goes on for quite a few beats too long—which i realize is probably intentional anti-comedy, but it really bogs down the rhythm and momentum of the video

CurlzMT

I'm so excited for this video! Great topic, killer intro, intriguing puppets. If you're still looking for feedback, here are a couple of thoughts on structure/clarity from a former journalist: 17:30-ish, where you start talking about the ethics of YouTube sponsorships: I think this could be tightened up. It gets a little into the weeds talking about the ethics of sponsorships *in general* and takes too long to tie back into the actual subject of the segment, Adobe sponsorships. The point about the pervasiveness of Adobe sponsorships among YouTube tutorial creators is really important and I think it would be better made with less of a ramble to get there. 24:00-ish, where you talk about Ryan from Film Riot recommending a set of $2400 lights: Again, we're getting a little too far from the actual subject of the segment (Ryan's relationship with Adobe). The point about him recommending products that are too expensive for beginner filmmakers is interesting, though. If you plan to keep this in, maybe you could add some narration mentioning that Adobe software is also very expensive and not necessarily accessible to most beginner filmmakers. That way you'd have a nice tie-in to the overall topic, because it's not immediately clear how the lighting stuff is relevant. (Seriously, the Adobe monthly subscription model is murder!! I get a free license through my school, but if I ever leave I'll have to pay $840 USD annually to access all the programs I currently use. I miss the days when you could uhhhh, extralegally download an old version of Photoshop. That was my gateway into digital art way back in the early '00s.) Anyway, good stuff, as always. If you have the time and footage, maybe you could also release a short Patreon thing about making the puppets? I fucking love puppets. OK byeeee.

Moritz Musings

Also, we are going to watch you make a donut, right? Is that what the Muppets are for? A muppet donut cooking lesson?

FriendlyBrews

Unfortunately. I've seen people I thought of very highly, even from an academic standpoint (and I'm in a related field), starting spewing this bullshit and being unable to see reason. I doubt any Zionist that denies a genocide wants a debate or is truly reasoning at this point. When they pull stunts like this I think are trying to look like a demographic, with these little appearances here and there whenever a content creator criticizes the apartheid state or Israeli run company in any way. Still, I admire your patience and your attempt at reasoning with this genocide denier. I'm way too tired for this shit anymore.

Owen Thurston

Im only 1 minute in and man oh man there’s a joke that was written way before SOMETHING happened and now sounds eerily prescient

(micah gray-berrios)

i’m so excited for the full version !!! :^D i hope the rest of production goes more smoothly best of luck guys <3

Apes a Plenty

Really good video. Despite the fact that I know adobe killed flash for money it would be a much better video if you cited some kind of evidence for it. If you can locate any shareholder presentations you can usually find some good mask off moments there.

Calysto

part of my first year in film school was literally being told to watch video copilot to get used to adobe premiere. gods this is gonna be good

Calysto

this also reminds me of a video adam savage made about sponsorships during their time at mythbusters where he said they didnt want to get put into that position of having to lie or portray something favorably if they were sponsored so i think they basically never did it. i believe that video is on his youtube channel

Lucky Dagger

I definitely think game reviewers shouldn't have sponsorships with games but shoes, mattresses, the latest anime blind box subscription service or whatever are far better because everyone needs clothes and a bed and lotta gamers might like an anime blind box. Gamers shouldn't be doing RAID shadow legends ads.

Dor Oh.

This is the same mentality of the man that shot Charlie Kirk. I’m not beyond reasoning and I’m not denying the suffering of others.

Orange Generator

The amount of times "Adobe" is said is making my head spin LOL. And the "I've partnered with Adobe" supercut is comedic GOLD <333

2026-09-05 04:00 I'm so sad to say I'm intimately familiar with adobe animate. I have to use it for work because I'm an artist for a virtual pet site that used a lot of flash. I work with .swf and .fla files daily since theyre so integrated into the site we couldn't possibly use any other program, and we need to vector brush tool. This is all in my personal opinion and in my experience and stuff but soooo many things break when I export them and when I don't know what to do it's sometimes impossible to find tutorials to explain it, the only people that can help are people that have worked in flash since I was a child and never stopped. And even then, sometimes the only thing you can do is start again from scratch. I could make my own damn essay about how it can clog up a whole production pipeline with its nonsense. My team jokes about how it's like we're all in an abusive relationship with the program.

Have you seen the affinity website / emails? A “big change is coming” October 30th. They were bought by Canva a year ago - reddit is almost certain a subscription model is imminent. They’ve taken the option to purchase the perpetual license off the website. Will be interesting to see what the outcome is - but as a hobby designer, who dropped $500AUD on the V2 affinity suite perpetual license, I’m feeling very very bleak. Might be good to keep an eye out in relation to this for the vid, I fear that the expectation for AI included in these platforms, the subscription model being the way these companies make ongoing revenue for their shareholders, and a 500 million dollar acquisition by a company like Canva is another death knell for a great software.

Terra4311

recently Ive been learning Unity (game engine) and their tutorials are actually super robust on their website, as if they want people to learn how to, you know, use the software, and its actually helped me learn a ton, I hate Unity, but they want you using it at least

archiemcw

This has been sort of a wake up call for me, I've known Adobe to be a pain in the arse (purely from having to work with it's tools) however I never realised that the long history of the company has been purchasing competitors tools, making bank and then letting it rot. Just recently I've been using Frame.io since it got bought, and I've found the product no different than before, other than it being EXTREMELY buggy now. I think one thing that has been nice to see is the tutorial space really growing on platforms like TikTok and seeing a lot of young creators help each other out. I don't really bother using YouTube these days for tutorials unless I really need to, as it's just littered with sponsors and techniques that involve a sponsored plugin. Also, the part about the frankenstein monster of names and tools across the apps is so true man. I can't imagine the nightmare someone had when they were in charge of creating the dynamic link tool between Pr & Ae. Oh and having to use plugins so you can properly import shit from other programs, like having to use Overlord to bring Illustrator projects into After Effects. Need someone to make the Blender of video editing & mograph tools, I can only dream

MrGamy

At 20:30 about the conflict of interest: Yes, it's a massive conflict of interest! But there are some channels out there showing how it should be done. Gamers Nexus is known for their harsh critique towards companies no matter if they sponsore(d) them in the past. Of course that also only works thanks to additional income via patreon or their store. I'd say the mix of income streams keeps the advertiser overreach at a minimum. (And advertisers that do try will be called out by them)

IDoDabble

I do wonder whether the fact that Adobe has a very sizeable data selling business at this point, will come into play.

MK

i guess its time to watch this for third time.

ErbBetaPatched

Sounds like these problems could be avoided by using Sony Vegas instead.

Andrea Cervantes

Went back here after listening to the Kelliot podcast roasting the latest Adobe Max releases lol.

NumberedMonk

"Did you think you lived in a democracy? You idiot. You worm! That doesn't generate money for shareholders. There are higher principles at play here than making the world a better place for humans to live in. You can't even measure joy. There is no immortal soul! But there is a god, and his name is NASDAQ!" This might be, genuinely, the single most metal description of capitalism I've ever heard in my life. Lives in my head rent free, and I posted this in a group chat (tongue-in-cheek, of course) when we were all bitching about the next round of price increases being pushed out to customers next quarter. Hold on to your butts, cable is getting (even) more expensive (again)!

Katie P.

I'm now convinced "partnered" is a made-up word created by Hbomb and Adobe

Banished Kuroe

The precautions you have to take with my country seems like trying to get into North Korea, except even worse somehow. I hope you get back to the UK safely after all is done.

Fun fact: the full Patreon version came out exactly one year later on August 11th 2026

Niek van de Pas

I agree that the video is a bit long and would probably cut (from) the Steve Jobs rant --- the fact that Steve Jobs was an asshole is such a dead horse at this point, it's been discussed to death and it doesn't seem like this video has much new ground to cover there.

Hbomb

Thanks for this comment! I've slightly reworded this bit to be more accurate!
