Amazingly enough, the only real difference between 'Amazing Digital Circus' and the short story on which it is roughly based, 'I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream', is the antagonist's intent. In ADC, the artificial intelligence-created ringmaster Caine's soul purpose is to organize daily adventures to keep his six human avatars entertained. In Harlan Ellison's short story, AM (Allied Mastercomputer) is a supercomputer created to coordinate weapons and troops due to the scale of the 'war' (presumably World War III), but gains sentience and eradicates humanity except for five individuals...who are forced to endure endless torture as a form of revenge against AM's creators.

Similarly, whether intentional or not, both antagonists drive their captives to near-insanity (and/or beyond).
