Update:

Buh-bye Nichole.  Thanks for for knocking the the power out for six hours (of which, I slept through three).  Just long enough to drag the generator out, cover myself in gasoline, start said generator...and watch the power come back on fifteen minutes later.  Fuck you, Nichole.

Other than that, no damage...just a bunch more little tree limbs that the last hurricane didn't get.  The power is still out at work, so I may have tomorrow off as well.

On the bright side, I got the day off from work tomorrow.  *rolls eyes*

We're not really expecting much from this one...just a lot of rain and the usual chance of power outages.  In other news, my county got a new solid waste contractor...who still hasn't picked up the pile of debris in front of the house from the last hurricane.  At this rate I'll be staring at the same pile of tree limbs...in 2023.

As per usual, if said hurricane should decide to go rouge and put me in the dark for an indefinite period, I've got plenty of pieces scheduled for the coming week.

Here ya go again, eh? Maybe if you're lucky Nicole will get jealous of Ian and blow the debris into the next neighborhood, if not and the power goes out you'll have plenty of firewood for sitting outside in the evening. Hope it all works out okay. Stay safe.

John

You may want to start looking into buying a small wood chipper. At least that way you can do something with the limbs that are piling up. Just watch out, as your neighbors may want to borrow it, followed by everyone else around you as each borrower, loans it out to someone else.

Ehh, I've got one of those LP fire pits on the back porch. Real fire places are kind of a rarity / oddity in FL...and I'm too lazy to put a fire pit in the back yard. Power was only out for six hours and (yet again) it was some out of state contractor from North Carolina that got it up and running. I haven't seen any trucks from own power company out...in this hurricane or the last.

Ehh, I don't have a big enough yard to justify buying one...only on a little over a third of an acre and the house takes up half of that. Even if it was one of those cheapo Hobo-Freight / Tractor Supply ones I might use it, what, once every four or five years? S'what I pay muh taxes for. :P

John

Meh, don't worry, global warming will help you amortize the costs with more hurricanes over the years. *joking*

I (jokingly) tell the wife that we're not putting in a pool cuz we're gonna have beachfront property anyway. We're 40 miles inland. :P

I hear ya. We've got one of each, LP, wood pellet, charcoal/wood grill and an open pit, what can I say Wifey likes sitting by a fire and I'm a former Boy Scout/pyro, funny thing is we never seem to run out of wood even tho we live in the city and have never bought any, the pecan trees just keep providing, go figure. Sorry about u having to get drenched in gasoline tho, I thought whole house gens only came in diesel, LP and natural gas forms. Anyway probably the reason I haven't seen a local power crew is that they're busy sucking up to the ritzy neighborhoods, but that's okay we're glad to send u some of our crews. We don't get hurricanes but they're pretty tornado fluent so they'll get'r done. Anyway enjoy the day off if u can. Stay safe. I'll type at ya again soon enough.

Ah, yes...that was the other thing. The (still under warranty) whole-house gen decided not to start automatically...it's LP with an underground tank. So, I had to pull out ol' faithful...name so, not for it's reliability to start, but rather.... Yeah.

Robert B.

I thought that's what u had mentioned before that it was LP but I wasn't sure, but I remembered that u had gotten the gas one after the big one before getting the whole house gen. Huh, so the whole house gen doesn't come with a manual start override? I would have thought it would. Interesting. Yeah we've thought about getting a whole house gen but since we have a big and a small gas gen plus a solar and wind charged battery bank we haven't been able to justify the cost yet. Well it's a good thing u had the gas gen, now all u gotta do is get the whole house gen fixed for next time and get them to put in a manual start switch if they have one, just in case it decides to outlast the warranty before acting up again. In the meantime u might want to start old reliable every once in a while just to keep it smooth running. Hopefully it won't take that long for them to do the warranty work. Good luck.

It's already fixed. The whole board that does the auto-start (and has the manual mode) was fried...lightning more than likely got it. Fixed under warrantee yesterday. "Ol' faithful" it would seem, has a factory recall for the same reason I call it that. The fuel tank has an internal vent tube that's got too much of a crimp in it somewhere causing it burp fuel back as you're filling it. Already contacted them...they're sending 'a fix', whatever that means.

Robert B.

I guess you're lucky then that you weren't around the WH gen when it got fried. But it's good that you got it fixed and that your fall back is getting fixed too. Hopefully you won't need to use them now that they're fixed. Good luck on getting "the fix" installed.
