I really liked it. It was a bit long (especially the casino sequence) and the Leia in space scene looked totally dumb (like something out of Hocus Pocus), but it was great. Way better than Force Awakens.

Think I’m with you Jay, some silly and unnecessary bits but the Luke & Kylo interaction at the end was the best bit of the film for me. Be very interesting to see how the tiny band of Resistance fighters will turn the tide against the First Order, preparing myself for major John Cena babyface no sell comeback from the goodies 😂

Can't wait to listen to this once I come back from the movies! I don't know much about it, but I do know some kind of twist exists.

I am really thinking this trilogy's sole purpose is to distance itself from the characters from the original trilogy. With that said I think this trilogy will end with sort of truce between Rey and Kylo. It seems to really be pushing how good and evil must co-exist. Snoke is the Taskmaster from the Dungeon of Doom.

It was fresh ( as far as Star Wars films go), it was really funny, it had amazing action sequences, and it blew up some old tropes. I loved it. I'd wager most people that hated it saw it in a group with others who read a bunch of hate-fueled-rants about the film. So controversial, I dug it.

I've just come back from a second viewing, agree with a lot of what you've said. The Leia force scene was unintentionally funny both times, as well as Kylo high pants (but I'm ok with that haha.) Really loved all Kylo + the end Kylo/luke scene too. I like Rose and Finn but wasn't feeling the whole casino mission, or the forced kiss/romance? Not really needed tbh. I loved Emo Ren's freakouts in TFA actually, and I'm looking forward to seeing him and Hux continue to get on each others tits in ep 9, with Kylo yelling and Hux turning it into an actual commandable order. p.s. Noticed Ade Edmonson as a FO member and couldn't stop laughing at picturing Eddie Hitler on the bridge, Hux gave off that real greasy Richie vibe too!

It was good until the ending which was straight out of the 'bullshit Russo swerve' factory. Why bother doing the tease in the Luke/Kylo scene, swerve us and then do a 'lol jk' afterwards? They should have just done it in that scene and skipped all the BS. It would have given Kylo monster heel heat. Luke vs Kylo should have been Luke's chance to make up for his failure as a teacher vs Kylo's conflict of continuing with the Dark Side or redeeming himself. We got conclusion for neither. I expect to be equally disappointed now that I've read JJ Abrams is directing IX. As he turned VII into a remake of New Hope, I'm expecting IX will be no more than a remake of ROTJ. To be as unspoilery as possible, Star Wars has always been about a certain set of people and now that what's happened has happened, I really don't care about what happens next. 4/10

Look out, Arbogast!

You and everyone else brought up similar points to what I had thought. But something I LOVED was that it subverted a ton of tropes and expectations everyone were thinking of before the film came out. While I liked TFA in its entirety, something I hated was JJ Abrams trying to make something 'mysterious' and something to solve a la LOST. Well, I'm glad that Rian Johnson just came aboard and said "nah, fuck that" and just made Snoke someone who was unimportant. As he should have been as it further elevated Kylo Ren, who has the storyline that fans care about. It doesn't matter who Snoke is/was as is Rey's parents being drunk nobodies. I'm more than convinced that Episode 9 was radically changed due to Carrie Fisher's death. Watching the ending, I'm guessing a really sizeable time jump where Leia's death is introduced in the opening crawl and the Rebellion is slowly but surely growing with Rey being a fully realized Jedi. A solid 8.5/10 for me. I had fun watching it but terrified about the Han Solo standalone prequel next year. I think it's going to be the first real misstep in this new Disney Star Wars universe. Also, Luke's ending scene was perfect.

Nice work on the review, Jay, now I know not to go and rush out and see that abomination of a star wars movie, and wait until I can stream it via Netflix or my lovely PS4, also calling Han Solo as part of the B team in Return Of The Jedi is just criminal

I really enjoyed the film, I get where you are coming from with the casino sequence but I really enjoyed the fact that it was a red herring with Justin Theroux popping up for two seconds as the master code breaker just for Benicio del Toro to become the character to drive the plot forward also I loved his totally obvious heel turn.

Savan DePaul

Overall a few more positives than negatives (maybe a 6 out of 10), thrown off by how Snoke got jobbed out so quickly without learning much about his character. Finn & Rose - I like em but their sidestory was bollocks. I called the del Toro heel turn as soon as he showed up in the jail cell.

Benjamin Emerson

I enjoyed it, seeing it a second time on Friday hopefully. I didn’t think Fin’s subplot was that bad but it could have done with some trimming neither did I find Rose annoying at all perfectly fine. It’s easily Hamill’s best performance as Luke but nobody has a duff performance so a thumps up from me.

I just hope Disney buys Nike soon, so they can start coming out with Air Leias. They already have the logo!
