I was so hyped for this movie back when it came out. I loved Donnie Darko and thought Richard Kelly’s followup had to be amazing with studio backup. I read the comic/graphic novels (Parts I, II, and III) and when the reviews were terrible I thought it was just because people didn’t get it, mostly because I was trying to be a 15-16 year old contrarian edgelord. Then I saw it... Wow what a piece of crap. There is so much trying to be packed into this stupid universe but it can best be summarized by two things. “Pimps don’t commit suicide,” stated multiple times as a deep and profound philosophy. And then the plot about the perpetual motion machine and how it applies to a person never having to go to the bathroom. This is the worst.

God dammit, Jay! Amy Poehler was Leslie Knope in Parks and Rec, not Ann Perkins! Ann was played by Rashida Jones. It's not a big deal tho, thanks for the AXCLOOOOSIV nonetheless! love ya boiz x

The only thing of value to take away from this movie is that Donnie Darko was a fluke

I enjoyed Donnie Darko, and wanted to like Southland Tales. But alas, it's pure streaming shit. I had forgotten just how much I disliked this movie until I started watching your review. In fact, the movie is SO bad I started getting mad at you, MY BRAHS! Thanks for all you guys do!

Jason

Southland Tales was a fucking awesome movie. You are objectively incorrect about your assessment of this film. It's okay though. We all get things wrong from time to time.

I remember being hyped for this film because of Kevin Smith's involvement, but it was impossible to know what the movie was about. When I finally watched it I understood why it had gotten the reputation it had quickly gained. Donnie Darko is a movie that's actually saved by the limits the budget put on the story, but no matter how you feel about Donnie Darko- One thing that perhaps tie it to this film is that Donnie Dark was released into theaters just around, or if I'm correct without looking up, exactly on September 11th, 2001. You can tell that media and the american culture may have had a been a big influence on whatever it is Kelly wanted to say next, in a classic case of second album syndrome. The greenlight for this film wasn't because of Donnie Darko's box office success, but DVD sales, so Kelly was already convinced his film career was over. Fun Fact: When Disney was going to turn HOLES into a film, one that ultimately ended up starring Shia Lebouf- One of the original screenwriters hired to adapt the children's book into a film was Richard Kelley. One page into his script, which you can find through his Twitter, you can tell why it was rejected as adaptation of a children's film- The script opens in almost the exact same way as this film opens. Yes, in his version of "Holes", the children's book about a giant desert with a hidden treasure somewhere in it abusing the labour of adolescents who choose to avoid prison becomes a story about the post apocalypse and the group of young boys who are rallied up by the government after sever nuclear blasts, and forced to dig up/find human corpses in the nuclear fallout of America.
