Final Fantasy VI is 30 years old, and while we discussed this fact during a live show at 2024's Midwest Gaming Classic—stay tuned—we saved the more in-depth conversation for AFTER the panel. In a fairly average-size room, we each consumed approximately one beer and decided to put our knowledge of this legendary RPG and also mental math to the test. This week on Retronauts, join Bob Mackey, Nadia Oxford, Diamond Feit and special floor guest Nina Matsumoto as the crew gathers to pit the cast of Final Fantasy VI against each other in an intense battle for supremacy. In a way, they're all winners... except Strago.

[Note from Bob: Our MGC podcasting plans changed due to unforeseen circumstances, so I had to learn to use someone else's recording equipment on the fly. The sound may seem a little different to you at first, but I manage to nail all the levels after the first five-or-so minutes.]

The Suplex animation, to me anyway, looks more like an inverted press slam. What bothers me more, though, is that it was ever renamed in future re-releases. Let us keep the suplex, but change the animation to be more suplex-like. What sounds cooler? I "Meteor Striked a train?" No, that sound like literally every other RPG ever. "I Inverted press slammed a teain?" No, what does that even mean? "I suplexed a train?" Absolutely. Nothing is more badass than that.

I always felt a strong connection to Edgar and Gogo. I gave Edgar my name because his brother is a nice big strong guy I named after my oldest brother. THEN I found out about bioblast and chainsaw and other things I related to as well. I love Edgar! Gogo living in a pile of fine textiles and being a mimic with no cares for gender makes them my other favorite. Also my husband says I look like the little Amano drawing of Locke.

There’s a little bit of Goku in Sabin: Fight-happy meatheads, who act first and ask questions later. Both seem to be constantly training, both of them find themselves on a path to the afterlife, and both have a Kamehameha. Sabin is more sensitive, though. On another topic - One thing I liked about FF 7 remake was the increased time we got with the characters so we get to see interactions that didn’t appear in the original game like Barret and Red XIII. It’s a shame FF6 has such a big cast because we only get a few Post-It notes worth of text between main characters. Like, they all wind up on an airship/casino with nothing to do, but they have nothing to say to each other. (And so, a million fanfics were written)

Loved this episode. Pushed me over the edge of finally buying the Pixel Remaster on Switch. Looking forward to reacquainting myself with those loveable weirdos.

The episode was a lot of fun, but I wanted to point out Sabin is actually skippable in the World of Ruin. Just don't go into the town and he won't join you. So with a ton of tedious grinding (in my case using a turbo controller on the river sequence with Banon healing you), you can beat the game with exactly three party members, Celes, Edgar, and Setzer. (You have single character parties in Kefka's tower, which sucks, but there are neat touches in the ending like Terra having a "disturbance in the Force" moment and flying to the tower to guide the airship.)

This opens the floodgates. Now we need rankings of other Final Fantasy protagonists, perhaps combining the lesser games, culminating in a epic best of the best ranking. Then expand that to Mega Man robot masters, Zelda items, and more.

Just when I thought we were running out of retrogame content, you all come out with something like this to keep squeezing every last drop from a beloved franchise to delight and entertain us. I'm hoping you don't view this as low hanging fruit or filler content, but I enjoyed listening to the banter and in-depth discussions about these characters from a now 30 year old game. Thank you for the episode!

I for one would like to read Nadia's essays on Celes. :)

Fun episode! One thing- the reason Strago joins the cult is because he thinks Relm is dead. (She slaps him out of it). Also, loved hearing 'Grand Finale' interspersed throughout- well done to that editor!

I knew about Relm's sketch bug, but Shadow's glitch was new to me. Like Bob said, the bugs must run in the family. Or maybe that's another dimension to how their shared trauma manifests and these programming issues were intentional all along.

In my senior year of high school I wrote an essay about Locke because I was, and am very cool. My teacher, surprised that a videogame could have somewhat complex characters, had me read my essay infront of the class. The non Nintendo nerds of the class were equally surprised. This transitioned into 15 minutes of me and my friend, Andy, going over the themes of love and loss in this wonderful game. Locke is my 11. Andy's favorite was Sabin.

As a black FF fan, I am floored to learn General Leo is black because I never perceived him that way. His skin looked more olive to my eyes. I just asked my brothers and they didn't think he was black either Instead of being happy for some black representation, I find myself annoyed that in a FF with fourteen party members, not only is the one black character not one of them, he also dies. And to be clear, I like General Leo, he's probably the most interesting character that's not a party member. Great episode! Makes me want to pick up FFVI again.
