When an Australian emergency room doctor set out to make a humble little car chase movie in the late '70s, he had no idea it would turn into an incredibly long-lived franchise that would light our minds on fire and cause us all to drive just a little bit faster. And now that nearly 50 years have passed, the Mad Max franchise has remained incredibly pure, with only five movies and a whopping two video games to speak of. On this episode of Retronauts, join Bob Mackey, Diamond Feit, and Stuart Gipp as the crew enters a veritable Thunderdome of podcasting to chat about Mad Max. WITNESS US!

This ep shall ride eternal. Shiny and chrome.

Since Vernon Wells’ Wez character made a cameo in it, I like to think Weird Science is in the Mad Max universe.

Excellent episode. Informative, informed and full of infectious love of the films.

I got to thinking "Muppet Babies was full of movie references. Did they ever do Mad Max?" It doesn't seem so, but I did find images of normal Muppets photoshopped into the movie and the results are amazing. Google & enjoy.

Great episode (as always) but I'd like to respond to the discussion of how George Miller's film career started. I'm an indie filmmaker who released my first feature back in January. It was a long and challenging experience, but one that I loved. It was after the film's release that it set in just how bleak the current environment is. My film was taken to the Cannes Film Market alongside 15,000 other films... What's more, streaming has devalued film's to the point where a feature film can earn about as much per view as a YouTube video! George Miller, Sam Raimi, Kevin Smith... success stories from a bygone era. Aspiring filmmakers today are forced to scream into the void in hopes that a cruel, uncaring algorithm will shine light upon them.

Great episode! I feel like Retronauts has been on a roll lately with a string of really good episodes. As for my personal experience with Fury Road, I remember it came out at a time in my life when I was doing a lot of travel for work. I probably saw it 4-5 times in a 12 month period, but only ever on an airplane. I remember it being one of the best movies I had seen in years. While my life circumstances have changed and I haven't seen the sequel, I'll get to it eventually. And the game too...

I watched all the Mad Max films this year. Probably one of the rare film series where almost every entry could make a solid case for being 'the best one' for completely different reasons than all of the others. I've never been happier or more pandered to than when we got to see flamethrower guitarist again in Furiosa. George Miller has always known where our bread is buttered.
