What's scarier: being trapped in an endless Lovecraftian nightmare, or the fact that Bloodborne is now old enough to be covered on Retronauts? While you mull that one over, listen in as Bob Mackey, Brendan James (of the Blowback podcast) and Libby Watson (check out her Twitch channel) dive into this modern FromSoftware classic and figure out if Old Blood is thicker than water.

blowback is so thematically appropriate for this game

Holy shit, Brendan James!

The in-episode discussion of Monster Hunter really makes me want Bob to cover that series on Retronauts. Pretty please!

And if you thought Retronauts covering games like Bloodborne and FNAF was terrifying... a friend on Discord told me they were going to a UNDERTALE 10th Anniversary concert in London, and all I could think was... holy crap, we're going to get an UNDERTALE episode of Retronauts this year, aren't we? As for Bloodborne itself, I haven't played the game proper nor Eric M. Lang's 2020 board game, but I have played Lang's 2016 Bloodborne card game, meaning I have enjoyed the Chalice Dungeon experience in the comfort of a board game cafe, and names like Vicar Amelia and Micolash weren't lost on me while listening to this podcast.

Great episode! Really looking forward to hearing the Dark Souls II episode someday as well :D

My friend and I beat our second playthrough of Elden Ring while sharing our screens on PS5. We're doing it again with Bloodborne, as I've coaxed him into finally playing for the 10th anniversary. It's a fun way to play and I can steer him into things he might miss. (He joked with Elden Ring that he missed half the game the first time!) I'm excited to both replay, and see his reaction to, all the memorable experiences. I'm most looking forward to Lady Maria of the Astral Clocktower, my favorite boss of ANY game ever. Hopefully I can get him to play Sekiro soon, as I worry my hands might not have the dexterity to beat it again.

I finally decided to give the Souls games a try during the pandemic and, after some very frustrating initial gameplay sessions with Dark Souls 1 (I really was on the verge of quitting a few times), everything finally clicked and it was as if the scales fell from my eyes once I finally got my hands on the Zweihander. Like Bob, I am not the best at playing video games, so being able to stagger basically every enemy made the game really fun for me, and it was then that I realized what the appeal of the game series is: there's no wrong way to play it. Whatever kind of fighting gameplay you enjoy doing, focus on that and build your character around that, and the game will be fun. After beating Dark Souls 1 and 2, my friend suggested I give Bloodborne a try. Honestly, I didn't know what to expect, and while I did enjoy it, once the game took its Lovecraftian turn it was honestly hard for me to continue to play it. Cosmic horror is probably the thing that scares me the most in fiction and this game really tested my limits. I did keep playing it, though, simply because the gameplay was so good, and I finally beat it and accepted my fate as a space slug.

It is a shame that the chalice dungeons are aging more poorly than anything else in Bloodborne. It's getting harder to imagine new people spending the time to reach the Pthumerian Queen like I did in college with far more free time. And now the codes for the best ones are long wind widely known so theres little mystery left. Some dungeons let me farm echoes and gems like crazy at least.

There is a bow in the game… Simon’s Bowblade

And don’t discount the chalice dungeons! They’re confusing at first but there is logic and lore to them
