Kevin: Way back in January, I convened an expert pack of hungry wolves to talk about the Fatal Fury series by SNK. There was so much to discuss we only got through the first three games and its anime adaptations, however, leading to this second part. Once again, Diamond Feit, Brian Clark, and Will Cuevas are all joining me here to delve into the back half of the 1990s, the other six arcade releases, and even the formerly unfinished and unreleased 10th game (which finally debuted this year).

If the first part covered Fatal Fury’s cultural peak amidst the fighting game boom, this episode really focuses on its technical and mechanical highs: very few of the latter-day Fatal Fury titles feel particularly dated and hold up as some of the prettiest games on the Neo Geo hardware. So sit back and enjoy a discussion of borscht belt comedy, odd localization choices, and the realization that Rock Howard needs better father figures! Please note that we recorded this in February, before the release of City of the Wolves or the announcements of its unfortunate guest characters, so don’t expect any real discussion of that title.

“I don’t know the Japanese word for pitchfork” made me laugh out loud. Thanks Diamond for brightening my day.

I second the praise for the SNK Game Boy ports. KoF '95 is the best fighter on Game Boy and it makes the Street Fighter II port look like utter garbage by comparison. Also, what's the deal with putting characters in business suits? I see it in artwork for various anime as well. I assume it's just a reflection of the work culture in Japan? Any insight on this Diamond?

At least here in Seattle, it’s not just Chinese restaurants that get numerical sequels. Behold: Olympia Pizza and Spaghetti House, which boasts an original, as well as a “II” and a “III”. (The Roman numerals are a nice touch.)
