In a cursed era when 2D platformers were thought to be forever banished to handhelds, Namco rolled out Klonoa: a side-scrolling game that tried to meet modern players halfway with its near-3D presentation. And despite five years of admirable attempts to make Klonoa a viable franchise, the character quickly faded away, leaving behind a legacy of critical praise and consumer indifference. This week on Retronauts, join Bob Mackey, Nick Daniel, and Chris Daniel as the crew sifts through the mascot platformer ruins and desperately attempts to redeem their fish taco coupons.

Adored the first one especially when my brother and I got it randomly back in the day; still holds a special place in my heart with its story and amazing soundtrack!

Playing the GBA Klonoa while listening to this. Definitely a bit more on Jeremy’s side in terms of the opinion of this one but hear where you all are coming from. It’s definitely not the prettiest game haha. Loved the episode! 🙏

Grew up with klonoa 2 and the cat in the hat ps2 game. Love this style of platformer.

disappointed no one played the wonderswan title or had anything to say about it

Empire of Dreams felt so magical when I first played it on GBA as a kid. Went back and played it after playing the Klonoa remake on Switch, and—yeah, it’s kinda bland. Still fun.

Moonlight Museum is the best Klonoa by far. Especially if you are the collect all the gems type. For starters there's 30 per level only. Second, there are no auto scrolling levels that require you to replay the entire level if you miss something. Third, if you mess up you can leave the room and come back and everything resets. The puzzle complexity was a perfect ramp up too. First you use an enemy., then a block, then a block and an enemy, then a fan is introduced. It is perfect and I love it. The Tate mode levels on og Wonderswan Hardware are neat as well.
