As the sun was setting on the 2.5D FPS, one game emerged to pull out all the stops: Duke Nukem 3D. While Duke 3D was mostly known for its brash main character and his many violent acts, those who actually sat down to play it realized that 3D Realms' creation actually contained some extremely clever level design and a variety of player interactions that just weren't seen in the mid-90s. Duke Nukem Forever might have left a stain on the legacy of Duke, but we're here to remind you that, even 30 years later, his initial 3D outing still kicks ass.

This week on Retronauts, join Bob Mackey, Stuart Gipp, Dominic Tarason, and John Linneman as the crew hails to the king and replenishes their supply of bubble gum.

Great to hear Bob Mackey is doing his William Shatner's TekWar research well in advance of Talking Simpsons covering The PTA Disbands.

Nowadays, if a game hero paraphrased a bunch of memorable one-liners from cult classic films of the previous decade, people would cry foul. But the 90s were a different time. Aside from that, my enduring memory of this game is how much verticality it had.

This was one of those games you experience through your friend's older brother. Case in point, one of my best friends growing up's older brother had the shareware disc and he snuck it over tot my house so we could secretly play it. It was less secretive when said friend got the N64 version and we played it often.

I don't remember the exact circumstances that led to this, but I do remember being with my dad when he was using his friend's computer to print something for work. He noticed the Duke Nukem 3D icon on the desktop. Little did he know I had seen it once at a friend's house, so when he hovered over the icon I got excited and also a bit worried that he'd start the game. He decided against it and I just pretended I had no idea what it was because I didn't want to get in trouble for playing games I knew I wasn't supposed to.

I remember seeing hitting the woman in the club and her opening her shirt when you pressed spacebar. It was so pixelated and unexpected I didn't know what I was looking at for months.

This episode was great! Stu, PLEASE make that follow up about all the Duke spinoff games. Most range from good to great and really don't get the appreciation they deserve. A remaster collection would be amazing. Let's agree to throw Forever into the dust bin of history and really give this weird franchise the love it deserves. P.S. Duke Nukem Advance was the best FPS on the GBA, a system that was (surprisingly) overflowing with first person shooters.

This was great, I learned a lot! I started college the same year the Duke shareware came out. The college I went to was ahead of the curve and had a campus wide network with a PC in every dorm room (2 students per dorm room) all with a T1 connection. Hilariously, with all that potential, I and the 7 other guys in our dorm unit spent two years playing level 1 of Duke via network multiplayer almost exclusively. We occasionally played other guys in the dorm and absolutely never online. We tried other levels three or four times. It was always a 4 player match and roommates would swap out every so often. All 8 of us knew absolutely everything about that map. Every secret, every weapon. Somehow it never got old. We did dabble with Shadow Warrior a bit, but we always went back to Duke 3D, level 1. To this day, despite logging hundreds of hours in the game, I still haven’t played more than 3 or 4 levels. Maybe its time I try the rest of the game out.

You guys need to cover Terra Nova!!! It was so ahead of its time!! That being said, I discovered Duke 3D on a shareware Cd from a magazine (PC Gamers it was called?) I played it on a P120, 32Mb of RAM… what a blast ! I bought it again a couples years ago on GOG.com

Dom's accent is like being wrapped in buttered velvet compared to the usual gutter argot of Stu (love ya mate! We're both apogee sickos it seems) Waiting for the day that Duke 1 is freed from his evercade prison. A very formative game along with commander keen. Age 10 dobbing my mate in to his stern and disappointed dad after my mate had show me the verboten Duke 3D is also a core memory...

Still love this game for managing to pull a trick on my sister using pipebombs and holoduke--I stuck the holoduke in an elevator with some pipebombs nearby and lurked. When I heard her yelp from the next room, I triggered the pipebomb.
