Nadia: The Game Boy Advance is celebrated for a lot of things, but its sound capabilities is not one of them. The soundtracks for GBA games tend to have a muffled, "dirty" sound to them that's especially obvious when you play its port of Final Fantasy VI. The lack of reverb in the GBA version does Uematsu's legendary soundtrack no favours.

But is that even a fair comparison given the gap between the SNES' famous music capabilities and the GBA's…less robust tools for musical composition? Heck, the Game Boy Advance SP didn't even have a headphone jack! Nintendo might not have put a lot of thought into the GBA's sound hardware, but many game musicians did. Myself, Victor Hunter, Diamond Feit, and some guy named Jeremy Parish gather to give the GBA's best soundtracks a fair listen.

Yeeeees! GBA design on a Monday 🥰

PosiVibez4evr

Victor’s depth of music knowledge contributed so much to this episode, love it! 😊🙏

Retronauts on-call J-Rock consultant here! Jeremy posited that a member of L'Arc~en~Ciel may have composed one of the Castlevania GBA soundtracks. I believe he was thinking of Mana from Malice Mizer, but that didn't actually come to pass! People talked about it for YEARS, so it may have actually been in the works...but it never ended up actually happening!

As I understand it, the first Ecks vs Sever wasn’t a movie tie in (it released almost a year before the movie); the second one, Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever, was the direct movie tie in.

Butterflies have chrysalides, moths have cocoons ;P

The GBA must be the most successful classic console without dedicated sound hardware (including the 2600’s TIA chip as sound hardware).

Looking forward to seeing if the GBA MP3 player gets discussed.

Bears in Games Neo

I'm just gonna go ahead and say it: I really like the GBA versions of the Final Fantasy tracks

Not to be that terrible annoying know-it-all, but you can absolutely put accidentals in chiptune compositions. Chiptune can be one of the most expressive and technical genres of music as far as complexity because it's also not bound to a A-440 tonal scale like most western instruments (fretless string instruments aside) and does not have to be performed by a human, meaning you can write "technically unplayable" music. Tool assists : speed runs :: chiptune (or any programable genres) : music in general Bottom line, though, is that chiptune music f*king rips! Sorry to be obnoxious!

thank you for having 1 person on this episode who is capable of talking intelligently about music! next music episode you should go for 2!

Shrunken Shrine

I played a lot of GBA long before I knew anything about music, so I think I'm kind of nostalgia-deaf to its deficiencies. Hearing the uncompressed MP3s of Wario Land 4 are nice to have but it doesn't sound the same without the grit of being bitcrushed to hell and back.

Finally Ecks vs Sever gets its time in the sun! Very much the weird unwanted-gift-game you'd borrow off your friend then return to them the next day.

Wood Duck [Legacy Edition]

It's always super satisfying on any episode of the show when you bookend the segment with music you were discussing directly or tangentially, and likewise very disappointing when you don't! Or for the more advanced listener you bookend with related music *before* discussing something.

The Castlevania Advance Collection includes an option for "High Quality Sound" that seems to clean up a lot of the hiss. I do think the music loses some... grit without it
