Stuart: Hello, Nauties! It’s me, the English esquire, the British bullshitter, the Albion I’ll-be-on-your-podcast… er, ignore that last one, it got away from me. Actually, just ignore all of them. Hi, I’m Stuart Gipp. I’ve gathered my dear pals Seumidh MacDonald and Dave Bulmer to once again discuss a Legend of Zelda classic. Why? Well, because I played through Wind Waker HD—the first time I had done so—and thought it would be worth discussing out of context.

What context, you ask? I suppose the hindsight that’s inherently factored into any given coverage of a game that came out, ooh, 400 years ago now. I don’t really know anything about Zelda, which I think—perhaps arrogantly—makes my perspective worthwhile in a discussion of it. And yes, I’ve done the work, I’ve played the game. But you’ll have to listen to the episode to find out if I liked it or not. It’s a secret.

Jocular self-aggrandisement aside, I do enjoy this format. I’ve been trying to spend my gaming time in 2026 playing through the “big games”, ones that turn up on lists of The Greatest Bestest yet for whatever reason have always evaded me. As I said, I think it’s valuable for people who encounter these titles to talk about and get some hopefully new and interesting opinions out there. Dave and Seumidh are always a treat to talk to and I hope that this discussion of an acknowledged (but controversial) classic will hold some value for you!

We’ve already got another “Out of Context” episode in the bag, this time covering another, non-Zelda Nintendo 64 game. What could it be? Who could possibly know? Well, me, I do. And Seumidh. And Dave. And, I suppose, anyone who pays attention to my BlueSky. But for god’s sake don’t do that, I don’t half wibble on.

Fun episode! I really enjoy hearing Stuart’s fresh perspective on a game I have loved since release.

All the talk of the Zelda timeline and its eventually additions reminds me if how the Gundam timeliness all somehow reunite in Turn A Gundam despite all the variations (since all the Zelda branches end up ending in Breath/Tears)

I love these out of context episodes. So interesting having Stu’s fresh perspective contrasted with Seumidh and Dave who played it closer to the time of release. Looking forward to the Twilight Princess one now. 😄🙌

There are actually are a few Gorons in the game. They're traveling merchants in a few islands, which can be missed. They also cover most of their faces, so maybe that's why Stuart didn't recognize them.

Loved this episode. The section in the castle under the water hit me in a profound way when I first played at 12 years old. When I got there I wanted nothing more than to go and explore the Hyrule that that castle existed in. I wanted to see what happened to the world after ocarina. After recently replaying BotW, it finally hit me that that’s what that game actually is. Sure the stylistic echoes here and there, the shrines are straight from it. But the feel of the land itself felt exactly like 12 year old me thought was beyond that boundary under the sea.

Of course Stuart would say boat goes binted in a Wind Waker episode.

The discussion about Ganondorf as a complex character just makes me sad recalling how cool he looked in TotK but just turned out to be a generic anime villain. The idea of "power hungry man cursed to be an elemental embodiment of evil as part of a repeating pagentary" is a very interesting one.

OI find Stuarts criticism of the prescriptive nature of 3D Zelda progression (do dungeons in order using items to unlock next area) quite funny. It'd be like someone who only ever played 3D Mario games trying SBM3/SMW complaining it's all "run left to right? And another overworld map with set paths between levels?" It's just how the games were for the time and they were great, as much as in hindsight you can plainly see the limitations. (And even within that there's heaps of exploring you could do in OoT/MM/WW to other areas ahead of the breadcrumbing, if it was your prerogative and you weren't just tunnel visioned on the next objective) It's also the reason BotWs freedom was so mind blowing good and fresh, but from memory Stuart didn't really like it? I blame the curse of playing Dizzy as a child or something.

Everyone hates on Skyward Sword all the time. Sometimes I feel like I'm the only defender. Hopefully for the eventual Skyward Sword episode you can go into it with an open mind and have at least one person advocating for it. (Ping me if you're desperate.)

Having only recently played Link’s Awakening and finally understanding all the fuss about it, I hope to have a similar experience with Wind Waker. I hope the NSO version is good enough and I don’t have to get Dolphin or some other emulator working, but either way I’m excited to experience this game “out of context.” I was around when it launched but didn’t have a GC, though I distinctly remember the fan backlash to toon link. The idea that Zelda can only be one thing or it has to be “gritty” is insane. Tell that to the pink bunny from A Link to the Past.
