Jeremy: Way back, long ago, in episode 693 (OK, so it was like a year ago), we tackled the history of Capcom's vertical shooters. And it was good. However, it was also meant to kick off a series of Capcom-focused overviews by genre, which hasn't happened yet. What can I say. Life gets away from you, and there are so many other topics for us to tackle. But here we are, circling back.

This was meant to be a single overview of Capcom's platformers, but as is our wont, we accidentally only got halfway through the prepped material. You know what that means... but don't worry. Stuart Gipp, Patrick Kulikowski, and I will absolutely circle back in less than a year from now to continue the Capcom saga.

This was also meant to be episode 777 of the show, but some technical issues came up that forced me to push this episode ahead in the schedule. This is precisely why I never talk about episode numbers during an episode. Anyway, just carry forward all of that talk with you and pretend I saved it up for the actual 777.

An episode talking about great things. Def here for it.

I've finished Ghosts'n Goblins twice before! the haaaardest part is that ghastly riot right before the very last boss! Everything else is something you can kind of study and learn. There is an axe in the first one but it's weird and rare. The later ones are much better. Thank you for always making such a lovely program, especially for so long! Also Jeremy was always right about Ultimate, that game is bad bad bad.

This and its ‘90s counterpart were a great pairing. Looking forward to more episodes in this series. I’ve been learning a lot from Akira Kitamura’s Patreon about this era of Capcom and how he saw Mega Man as a response to the criticism that Ghosts ‘n Goblins was too tough. Instead of using arcade DIP switch settings or level select codes, he thought of the idea of allowing players to select their own stage order. He also considers the game to begin with the Wily stages. The six stages before it are just Mega Man getting to full power. I’d never thought of it like that before.

Funny enough, I had the Capcom Collection that came out for XBox back in the day and I did manage to legitimately beat all three Ghosts n Goblins games back in the day! I would lose my mind trying to do it now but was able to do it with a healthy amount of gumption! I’ll save my Mega Man thoughts for the next one but I will say the first one is impossible for me to finish without the save states of the Legacy Collection, no E tanks is beyond evil!
