Yeah, it's another one of our Final Fantasy deep dives. I bumped this one forward in the schedule because the game in question—Final Fantasy Tactics—has been in the air a lot lately. Most recently, several of Final Fantasy XIV's expansions have delved into the world of Ivalice, which made its debut here. And as always, people everywhere long for a follow-up to Tactics that recaptures the depth, accessibility, and sophistication of the game without weird convolutions. (Ahem, Judges.) We tend to agree!

Beh-oolv. Beh as in the Canadian "eh". Beowulf isn't too far off, but there's no "w" sound. I don't want to be unkind but after listening to both episodes of the FF7 two-parter I was relieved to hear Chris Kohler wasn't on this one. He's very knowledgable and sometimes quite insightful, but he needs to cut waaaay back on talkingover the top of everyone else and constantly interjecting mid-sentence - the first of those two FF7 episodes in particular, an otherwise great episode on a top-tier subject, was frequently frustrating to listen to after hearing yet another thought from one of the panel cut off mid-sentence and left incomplete thanks to another rapid-fire interjection. I know plenty of people who are like this, and I know it just comes from enthusiasm and probably a bit of ADHD (I'm also sometimes guilty of this) rather than malice or disrespect, but it can get tough to hear so often during such a long episode... Sorry for commenting on such an old episode. And I feel bad singling him out when I've heard several other guests doing the same thing (and it's been equally hard to hear then) - just felt like I had to say this, as I struggled listening to it, and I feel like it's worth noting that a couple of female friends of mine have cited this exact thing as having put them off of other podcasts (unfortunately I'm not so fortunate as to have irl friends nerdy enough to listen to Retronauts.) Anyway, love the show 😂❤️ sorry for the general incoherence - I write this a bit delirious at the end of a 1600km drive.

I definitely got into FF:Tactics because of my love of Shining Force. My brother and I played and replayed SF and SFII - then pre-ordered and received the only copy of SFIII in our city. When volumes II and III never came out, we needed to scratch that itch and Tactics was it for awhile - until the judges were introduced, which made us jump over to Disgaea.

The comparison to DnD is apt as Matsuno made Crimson Shroud on 3DS which is literally a tabletop game.

I can't express how nervous I am about playing through Tactics eventually on Square Roots, because I bought the game day 1 and have never, ever defeated Wiegraf. Heck in later playthroughs I couldn't even get through the room with all the archers BEFORE Wiegraf. Maybe I just have to accept that I am The Worst at Tactics games.
