Hey everyone, happy Friday! I know it's a happy Friday, because gosh darn it, there's a podcast about Etrian Odyssey in your feed. If that doesn't do the trick, I don't know what will.

This is another banked episode recorded in The Before Times, featuring myself, Bob, Jason Wilson and Kat Bailey together in the studio—well, mostly. (Jason was apparently prepping for the current state of things and Skyped in.) It's pretty rare to be able to pull together a four-seater show about what is a fairly deep-cut RPG and be able to have a collectively knowledgeable conversation about it for 90 minutes, but then, Etrian Odyssey is a pretty rare kind of game. Sure hope the series isn't gone forever... but even if it is, at least we have our memories, preserved in podcast amber forever.

Before playing an Etrian Odyssey game, I always thought it was just like playing Google street view with anime girls. It absolutely is, and is grand.

Great podcast folks! This episode’s also made me want to finally give this series a try. I guess I’ll start with V? Or Nexus?

Figured I'd mention that Kazuya Nino left Square Enix after Dragon Quest Builders 2 to join Type-Moon's new studio. Probably because he had a stint at Marvelous and was a huge part of Fate/Extra

Halfway through the ep and I want to cut it off and play this game. Lol no disrespect but it sounds amazing!

Considering the average phone has more than enough space to fit the contents of two DS screens I'm surprised no Androidian Odyssey exists. Alas!

I'm curious how you guys would rank the series. There doesn't seem to be a lot of consensus in the fan community. It seems to be that IV is great but a bit easy and sort of lacks the charm of descending level by level of the earlier games. V is great but lacks a bit of the heart of IV. Nexus is great but overwhelming since it's kind of a XX Generations All-Stars game. And finally people seem to be split on the Untold games as many fans would argue that the games don't really need stories to begin with. Thoughts?

I still have my issue of EGM with their Etrian Odyssey review, and it is brutally divisive. That specific issue may have the highest quotient of mediocre to bad reviews in any issue I read of the mag.

A delightful and engaging episode. I'm finally giving the demo of IV a go. I didn't know that I needed this game!

Just catching up with this episode. Great dynamics in this one! Really nice explanation of the genre and the game for those, like me, who are pretty unfamiliar. I just ordered a copy of IV from eBay after hearing Jeremy say that’s where he’s recommend people start. This ep certainly has me wanting to play the first game, though.
