Great Scott! It's time to go back in time 35 years to revisit a classic movie that went back in time 30 years and forever changed the way we think about time travel throughout all forms of media. On our latest Patreon-exclusive episode, we shine the Retronauts spotlight on Back to the Future, a simple sci-fi comedy that unwittingly became a blockbuster trilogy and—unlike some franchises—has mostly maintained its dignity over the passing decades. Henry Gilbert joins us as we discuss this 1985 classic in full, and explore the incredibly awful games it inspired (including some you might not have heard of), as well as the much better games it indirectly inspired. You know that new podcast you're looking for? Well, listen to this!

This episode made me want to revisit the film but then I learned it was not streaming in Japan - but it will air on TV next week, followed by the sequels! Good timing.

Oh man, that NES game was so bad.

One of my favorite movies of all time from my childhood! Sadly (or perhaps gratefully), I've never tried any of the games.

I will merely say that Judge Doom TERRIFIED me as a kid. Everything from him getting run over by the steamroller on was nightmare fuel.

My favorite call-forward in BTTF is the fact Doc tries to use an original Old West style Colt revolver to shoot at the terrorists at the mall. Even more impressive when you consider the Old West idea for Part 3 hadn't even been thought up of yet.

My favorite movies of all time by far. I’m about a year younger than Bob & Henry, so my first time seeing the original as a 5 or 6 year old was when it aired on ABC in ‘88 or ‘89. Saw Part II in theaters, waited for the VHS on III. Right after seeing Part II in theaters I got the VHS of Part I and was temporarily fooled into thinking that the VHS had 1 & 2 as one long movie on it since each film ended and began the same way. I was quickly disappointed when the credits rolled and they didn’t immediately go into 2015 lol.

It is a slight shame that BTTF1 didn't go into more detail about the post-WWII nuclear paranoia but it is a good movie overall.

On the subject of Doctor Who time travel rules the modern episode Father’s Day tries to establish the rules somewhat. The Doctor’s then companion Rose gets the Doctor to travel to the time and place where her father dies so that she can save him. The whole point of the episode is that there are fixed points in time that cannot be changed and Rose’s dad’s death is one of them. When you create a time paradox by changing one of these points monsters show up to try and fix it. Ultimately Rose’s dad has to die that day. The show probably contradicts this rule plenty of times, but it is an interesting take on time travel and the consequences. Spoiler: Later Rose gets reunited with her father anyway in an alternate universe. So it didn’t really matter long term, but it was impactful for a bit.

Great episode. When I worked at Halfbrick Studios I pitched and designed a Jetpack Joyride BTTF event for the 2015 "future" date. One of the highlights of my carrer. We added a Delorean and Hoverboard and a 2015 background, some of the coolest stuff we worked on. As mentioned - yes, Bob Gale is absolutely the gatekeeper of everything BTTF. We spoke to him several times over the phone during the development. In the mode you'd collect Flux Capacitors to increase your time - Bob called out that this is not how time travel or flux capacitors work, so we made it more of a "Flux Token", rather than the actual Flux Capacitor. Yes, even in silly runner games on mobile, we had to keep to the BTTF time travel rules.

I actually interviewed the producer and writer of the MysteryDisc LaserDisc games a few years ago, but couldn't sell the story. They're very cool proto-FMV games with a few recognizable character actors.

Great episode! Really enjoyed the movie talk and how it literally changed the future through influences in gaming and movies. Great chemistry of the hosts help too. Thanks!

I love the movie podcasts. Maybe Bob can go down that route with some Retronauts cartoon series podcasts a la what Jeremy and the East crew are doing with the film series? Besides major TV/game tie-ins like TMNT, the Simpsons, and X-Men, perhaps we can explore Transformers or Gijoe. Or go the other way and play with the idea of game-inspired tube media like the Super Mario Super Show, Captain N, and Sonic.
