Fans of The Dark Knight had to suffer through roughly 20 years of bad Batman games (after a few notable 8 and 16-bit adaptations) before Arkham Asylum arrived on the scene in 2009 and proved that Bruce Wayne simulators could once again be worthwhile. Combining the finest elements of Zelda, Metroid, and Metal Gear, while innovating with a great combat system and bringing on one of the most notable writers of the franchise, Arkham Asylum surprised us all and laid the groundwork for a four-game Batman Renaissance. On this episode, join Bob Mackey, Henry Gilbert, Chris Daniel, and Nick Daniel as the crew enters Detective Mode to examine the bones of this amazing modern classic.

Random Batman rumor I saw today: Michael Keaton is in talks to reprise his role of Batman in the upcoming Flash movie.

the demo sold me on this game, a well-crafted selection of a stealth section and a brawling section that wasn't just snipped from the final game: they edited two different parts together and then shared it. I had to have the whole thing when it was done.

I played this and City back-to-back for the first time in 2012, and I was actually surprised by how great they were. I had always heard good things but I just didn't give it much thought because my tastes are usually pretty random. The combat was what really hooked me. I'd never seen combat that was so effortless and fun without sacrificing difficulty. Scarecrow was always my favorite Batman villain, so his segment was a very nice experience. But I was disappointed that he went out like a chump.

No It Doesn't

Back in 2010 my friend had lent me his PS3 copy of Batman Arkham Asylum which I was very excited to play because I had just bought a PS3 with prize money I won at an art fair. I'm halfway in or less when I get to the infamous Scarecrow scene and I start sweating bullets because I thought either 1) I scratched my friend's disk or 2) the PS3 I just bought has hardware problems. I had reset the PS3 two more times until I gave up and went online for a solution where I discovered if I had just sat through it I'd soon know this was all apart of the game. What a scare and a laugh I had afterwards!

Arkham Asylum and the first Darksiders came out in a painful Zelda dry spell and I'll remember them fondly for filling in that void. I wish there were more 3D Zelda knockoffs but I imagine it's one of the hardest genres to really get right.

As a result of this episode, I'll probably pick up yet another grimdark game for cheap for the XB360 when I come across a copy...

I like this turn to explore more modern games. We need that Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (2007) retrospective pronto. This I do not kid.

Quite a bit late to the party on both the episode and the game itself but there's something to be said for making a compelling brawler in 3D as it mostly got translated into the 'character action' or 'hack n slash' sort of game -- it's interesting that they managed to get one that's mostly fists and actually feels good, skating animation be damned.

Game feels totally good and modern until Harley Quinn’s redesign reminds you of 2009 😔
