In just the past week, the world of retro games has been rocked and shocked by a data breach that's revealed some tantalizing Nintendo information to the general public. But what are the ethics of talking about illegally stolen data? Do we have the right to pore over historically important information obtained through nefarious means? And, most importantly, are you a cop? On this episode of Retronauts, join Bob Mackey, Henry Gilbert, and game history guy Liam Robertson as the crew examines a topic that's as complicated as it is fascinating. Listen in and you'll believe that 2021 is truly the year of Super Donkey!

If you guys didn’t make an episode based on this it would be podcasting malpractice.

I'm interested in what you guys have to say! I've been following these leaks closely and, ethics aside, they are fascinating.

I'm happy you guys covered some more abstract and difficult conversations outside of "x game series." I love those, too, but I hope some more high-concept conversations come around more often

Never expected Retronauts to be where I first heard about current events. I have no idea how I'm just now hearing about this. It's equal parts intriguing and disheartening to have so many company and game secrets shared publicly. There was a certain charm to Nintendo's insistence to be secretive. Just hope the company doesn't suffer from this leak.

Excellent episode, this stuff is fascinating!

I was just thinking how nice it would be if Retronauts covered this topic. What a great surprise! Question: Bob mentioned some discord chats covering this subject does anyone know of any good discord servers discussing this and other retro-gaming related topics ?

Just to let you know that Frank Cifaldi was wrong in that GDC talk. Basically the ROMs used on Wii Virtual Console are the same ones used in Animal Crossing including a version of Clu Clu Land that was never released on cartridge. Since it was never released on cartridge, there was no possible way for it to have a ROM floating around except for the fact that one of the developers of the iNES format worked at Nintendo since Pokemon Stadium. Also, the whole gigaleak kind of proves they preserve their stuff

I have thoughts on the matter of public IP and contract work but I will not bother with that until I'm not on my phone. In the meantime a couple thoughts on Super Donkey. First, that music was in fact an overdub by the video uploader. As to the game itself, the climbing and Mario-plus-climbing game play makes me think this prototype is a link in the chain to what would eventually be GB Donkey Kong. Made for the SNES in the time before the Super Game Boy was finalized and probably using whatever in-between SMW and Yoshi assets they had on hand. Would explain both the title and timeframe; those blocks and poles are technically distinct from YI sprite work. Even the pillbug is unique art despite its obvious connection to YI. If they'd seen fit to have a map, though, it makes me wonder how big they originally planned Donkey Kong 94 to be...

Anyone know what the song is that is played at the 32 min mark?
