Want to feel old? This is Metal Gear Solid 2's surreal treatise on digital information's devastating impact on society and democracy today:

But I kid! Well, not entirely. I only regret that we recorded this Metal Gear Solid 2 retrospective about a month ago and therefore missed out on any number of "more like META Gear Solid 2!!" jokes. Seriously, though, this game has been long overdue for a proper deep dive; it's one of the very few story-based video games that seems to get better and more meaningful with each passing year.

Well, the digital info part. Not so much the awkward confessions about faking injuries or banging step-parents. Those will always be kinda bad. But that's Metal Gear Solid 2 for you: Partly genius, partly disaster, and absolutely a game that demands to be experienced at least once... ideally in a single sitting so you're just the right shade of bleary-eyed and exhausted by the time you reach Arsenal Gear's gauntlet of Codec transmissions.

Thanks again to the G&G team: Greg Leahy for the edits, Greg Melo for the cover art.

Funny, just yesterday a friend and I were wondering when the MGS2 episode would be released!

Superb episode. One note for the audience: while the HD Collection is locked in PS3ville it's on Playstation Now, and the Xbox 360 version will run great on XBone and Series and can be downloaded for $20. So it's not QUITE as inaccessible as y'all thought but I'd love a PS4 or 5 port

I remember I rented a PS2 from Blockbuster just for Metal Gear Solid 2 since it was far cheaper to rent a console for $20 for a weekend and the game for $5 for me at the time. Since you didn't get a memory card with it I indeed beat the game in a single sitting, waking up at 8am to start it and finally finishing at around 10pm that night (with a few long Pause breaks to eat and shower) and indeed that is how you're supposed to experience the game, literally thinking "Maybe I should just turn this game off" when The Colonel tells you that directly in Arsenal Gear.

I just want to come out and say that I was about 18 when this game came out, and I absolutely loved it, but I definitely did not understand most of it. Don't think my brain was ready for a game like this. I stood in line at Best Buy the morning it came out, and I was very surprised at the amount of people there. Turns out, the Xbox came out that day, and people were standing in line to get one. They gave out green and black tickets by lottery and handed them out to people in line randomly. I got one, strange enough, and gave it to the kid next to me. One dude looked at me quizzically and I said "I am just here for Metal Gear Solid 2" and he said he was too, and we laughed at everyone else like we were in on a grand joke and talked about the demo. We gleefully ran to the PS2 aisle, which was packed to the brim with MGS2, and we were the only ones there. We high fived and walked to the parking lot as the masters of the universe.

I absolutely loved how in-depth and analytical the MGS episode from last year (at least I think it was early 2020?) was so I've been eager for this one for quite some time, and it did not disappoint. I've really got a hankering to hook my Xbox 360 back up to my TV so I can replay 2 from my HD Collection disc. They absolutely need to make all of these games playable on AT LEAST PS4/Xbone if not Series S/X, and I hope Konami doesn't hold out on it forever.

Just wanted to point out that this game plays great with Xbox backwards compatability on the one and series x/s
