Happy New Year! Some months ago, I went to Kyoto to the not-so-secret headquarters of Vitei, an independent game studio that will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2022. Vitei was founded by Giles Goddard, a young man from the United Kingdom who came to Japan as a teenager to work for Nintendo. Can you believe that sentence is a fact? I can't, and I've met this guy!

Giles Goddard and I, along with Chuhai Labs producer Mark Lentz, had a nice chat about how he started programming at an early age, the games he made while at Nintendo (such as 1080 Snowboarding, a game that also features his voice in a starring role), and his company which is actively developing and publishing games this very second. Well, not THIS second, because it's still New Year's break in Japan. But later this week, you know, I'm sure they'll be back at it.

If I sound nervous in this episode, and I do, please understand that this conversation took place early in 2021 before I had become a full-fledged co-host of Retronauts so we weren't sure whether this recording would become its own episode, a Patreon exclusive, or something else. Now it's here, it's real, and I'm proud of it. Enjoy!

British folks can be such a drag… kudos to Diamond for trying to keep this episode upbeat and engaging. The guest did him zero favors. Legitimately laughed out loud when the VR game was brought up.

Great interview and fascinating guest and experience. Nice one Diamond!

Whoa, the next Retronauts I'm listening to randomly after this one is the Mario 64 one and Bob just brought up Giles during the development portion.

I enjoy Diamond's weekly updates and his other stand alone podcasts. However I wonder if this interview should have been scrapped and maybe converted to an article only. i tried multiple times to listen to it but Giles just wasn't a good interviewee. Agreed that Diamond did his best to get some good points discussed but it was painful to listen as the two guys snipe at each other... Whew, I had to give up on this episode.

Nice work! Personally I enjoyed this, I find Giles career trajectory, along with Dylan Cuthberts fascinating. I'd love both of them to write a book about their experiences.

Is everyone whispering or trying to make it sound like ASMR?? Barely even hear anyone talking in this episode

Excellent interview Diamond. I can see Diamond becoming the go-to guy for Japanese interviews. :)

Giles: "I'm 50 ... When I worked on Star Fox I... " I'm 40 ... shiiiit Really neat hearing about nintendo's internal processes - start with programmer graphics and grey boxes, see if it's fun and iterate from there. And the internal reviewers not knowing what to make of 1080 - it's a sim, it's a racer, open ended stunter - when you do something new it's hard to answer "sure it's fun, but will it sell? is this a Nintendo game from Nintendo?" I ignored n64 in its heyday - but looking at the sales, it was as much of a smash as original starfox.

Really glad these dev interviews happen. Even if they're not the most action packed episodes, it's great to get the history from the folks who were there.

Loved 1080, rented it a bunch of times back in the day, thanks for the interview!
