Zool! Those four fearsome letters that strike such terror into the heart of the Americas.

What is Zool? Why is there so much fruit? Why do you press "up" to jump? All these questions and more are answered in Retronauts episode 429, hosted by—of course—Stuart Gipp, who is joined by Dave Bulmer (he of Sonic the Comic the Podcast fame) for the first time ever. And with a shocking, erotic reveal in the first few minutes, it's safe to say that things get a little bit silly.

But that's not to say this isn't the most in-depth overview of every aspect of the Zool series that's ever been committed to podcast, gosh darn it, covering everything down to the tie-in novels. Also, in a double feature, an interview with Gremlin Graphics co-founder Ian Stewart along with developers over at Sumo Digital Academy about the creation of recent remake Zool ReDimensioned. It's one gi-ANT episode!

Oh wait, Zool's not an ant. That's one of the main things I was supposed to get right.—Stuart

As a fellow Europlayer, I very much appreciate a Retronauts discussion about Zool. Zool! I remember playing this on the Mega Drive back in the 90s and thinking it was very cool, even if I couldn't make any headway, it being after all a European style platformer, that makes no sense.

I too loved Zool on the mega drive! Such an awesome game. Who doesn't want to be a fly traversing a land of sweets and biscuits!

I may be the only American listening who knows who the So Solid Crew are.

Moomoo

Holy Chupa Chups! I just played this one a little while ago.

BlueWeaselBreath

Great episode, guys. I laughed all the way through.

I always thought it was "Choo-pa Chuh-ps" but apparently in Spanish (where the brand started) it is "Choo-pa Choo-ps"

This is probably the funniest episode of Retronauts I’ve listened to in a while. Loved the quick back and forth of this combined with loads of self loathing. 😉 VERY funny. And yes, it’s “choop,” as it’s Spanish. “Chupar” is the verb “to suck” so confection sort of called “sucky sucks” in a vaguely distorted Spanish.

Chupa chups! I always thought it was Chupa Chips, though it wasn’t a really common brand here in the rust belt. This was a great episode and I got a lot of laughs out of the banter during the first half, glad Stuart can provide his perspective to Retronauts! And I’m also glad that this episode pulled the wool over my eyes, because I thought I knew Zool from the SNES port, and apparently I’ve been doing it wrong all this time. I am one of those 11,000 Jaguar owners who own a copy of the the sequel, so at least I can say that I’ve played the second game and I thought it was fun! FWIW, I thought the SNES port was fun too, but I also really enjoy games like Robocod so this series really fell into my wheelhouse.

I'm excited to hear people's insights and learn new things about the European gaming scene. These developer interviews have been great too. Stuart, you're killing it man! The way you dish out knowledge and humor is a joy to my ears. Keep it up! For me, Zool was just some dumb-sounding trash ROM in my Z folder of SNES games. When I saw it I simply dismissed it because as an American child let's face it: If it didn't have a license attached to it or star some variety of mammal, there was no point in playing it. That being said, I guess I'll have to give it a chance now!

Great episode! I was the other person who both owned an Archimedes and played Zool on it back in 93 although I was at university by then so I never got very far. This episode finally explained why I couldn't remember anything about the levels when I tried emulating the MegaDrive version. The original RISC OS (yes really) version was slightly diminished from the Amiga because the port omitted the animated raster bars in the background of the game. Almost immediately after release someone put together a program that ran in the background to add them, so you could get the full effect.

I remember seeing images of Zool during the 90’s, when platformers were all the rage. Interesting to hear so many details, thanks for the episode!

For anyone who complains about pushing up to jump, what else are you supposed to do when you've only got one button on your joystick? (Competition Pro forever!)

Dylan Green

British people shouting: "It's good! The music is weird! Why don't you understand?!?!"

Matt Richenburg

Yes. More window into gaming in the UK please!

Chris Galgon

I laughed endlessly during this episode. Even makes me want to try Zool again!

Komsomol General

This game looks so lame to me as a kid but I love this episode .

Tentomon4

Did not read that the Dave Bulmer was on this episode so that was a pleasant surprise. And he was in TOP FORM!
