Your patron-exclusive episode this week is also a patron-request episode. That's wild! But not as wild as this week's topic: Jumping Flash! and, by extension, developer Exact. Patron Scott Rothman absolutely twisted our arm to make us (that's myself, aka Jeremy Parish, and Todd "kidfenris" Ciolek) talk about a series and studio we love.

Although the bulk of this conversation revolves around Robbit (mon dieu!), we cover the full span of Exact's career, beginning with their early X68000 obscurities and ending with their high-profile PS1 hit Ghost in the Shell. It's a hoppin' good time.

Art by John Pading (no... Robbit...) and edits by Greg Leahy.

Yes! Haven't gotten a chance to listen yet but I love seeing Jumping Flash highlighted. One of the most interesting and underrated early approaches to 3D platforming. I miss that era, before 3D games had been "figured out" and settled into the relatively specific game loops and interface styles of today

Good one! Always interesting to hear more about Japanese developers like this. I bought Jumping Flash! for PSP right before the store closed ... I did enjoy a few levels, but I feel like with the tips shared here about movement, I might need to play it again.

I remember the other US release that kept PocketStation support was SaGa Frontier 2 (the only good SaGa game).

Apparently, Ultra later became MuuMuu. Their website is still mostly live, but the homepage is down.

I remember renting Jumping Flash and enjoying it, but not really getting it, so to speak. But, I thought it was fun and colorful, which is probably why I liked it. Ghost in the Shell was great fun - can't say if I beat it or not, but I know I spent a fair amount of time with it and absolutely loved it.
